JustinB he/him Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 The only question I have is: When are we having a Brandon Sanderson-con?! A Con dedicated to all things Brandon and would be EPIC!
Windrunner he/him Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 I'm sure the admins have more information then I, but at this point there are plans for an eventual ShardCon. I don't think that the details have really been worked out yet, but it's probably still a few years away. (Or in 17th Shard-speak, "soon" ) The community probably still needs to grow a bit more. But one thing to keep in mind, if you're looking for a ShardCon experience anytime soon, is the Stormlight 2 release party. It'll probably be sometime from 2013-2014 (hopefully not that late) and held at the BYU bookstore in Utah. A lot of us are planning on being there for the midnight release to meet each other in person and freak out for the new Stormlight book. 2

Conventions are big and expensive, and require a lot of backing in a fan base. Sanderson, though popular, is likely not popular enough to have a convention dedicated to him yet. I mean, heck, jordancon didn't start until 2009 (well after jordan's death) and is for one of the most currently popular high fantasy series. It would be cool for there to be one, but i honestly don't see one happening in the near future. Heck, AFAIK, there isn't even a stephen king convention, and he's considered one of the most popular modern-day writers.
Windrunner he/him Posted August 21, 2012 Posted August 21, 2012 "Few" was a bit of an accidental understatement. I didn't mean to give the impression that it was happening anytime soon. I'd never thought of it being a really big event, but I suppose you're right in that it has to be big enough for people to justify coming, which will cost money for the site and them too. I'm basing the fact that it will hopefully eventually happen off of something Chaos said once. I guess we'll just see.

I'm not saying it'll never happen, just that it's honestly very unlikely to be any time soon
JustinB he/him Posted August 22, 2012 Author Posted August 22, 2012 I say it should happen sooner rather than later. I was at the TOM release party at BYU, and there were hundreds of people, all there because of Brandon. if it was expanded out to all his books, more people would come. I think if we started out at a small venue, planned for a 2 day convention, and charged $50-75 a person, It could work.
Rubix he/him Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 There are plans being bounced around. As for actual logistics, we haven't gotten there yet, but we are planning to. As for timeframe, the best point of reference really is... "Soon"
Tamzin Ashevai she/her Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 I think a 'Shard Con' would be awesome, however, I can't imagine anything like this happening until The Stormlight Archive has at least received its second volume. Brandon took on a huge responsibility in completing Robert Jordan's W.o.T. series at the same time he was beginning his own epic. Perhaps this is an event we can all hope for in the future. 3
Rubix he/him Posted August 22, 2012 Posted August 22, 2012 Tamzin, don't worry. We're going to make it happen, but I'm guessing at the earliest 2015. At the ABSOLUTE earliest. And SLA2 will hopefully be out next year.
Tamzin Ashevai she/her Posted August 24, 2012 Posted August 24, 2012 Thanks for the support, Rubix! (I'm definitely impatient!).
WindSpren she/her Posted November 20, 2012 Posted November 20, 2012 So, I understand that this is potentially really far off... but if you guys need any help planning or need a sounding board for ideas, I'd love to help!
