Aminar Posted August 18, 2012 Posted August 18, 2012 In the campaign I'm looking to start the city is built above a large subterranean cavern system. Some of its denizens are oversized arachnids(Because why not). Could a Kandra essentially hermit crab in an exoskeleton/how would they interact with it ignoring cltural prouclivities. Also how would a mistwraith deal with large chitanous remains?
Kurkistan he/him Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 I don't see why kandra couldn't go all exoskeletal on us, and I imagine that a mistraith would still eat something with an exoskeleton.
Lady_Yasha she/her Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 Kandra have full versatility over the manipulation of their bone structure, so it's perfectly plausible to say they could form an exoskeleton. They'd require a lot of bones if they intended to form an internal rigid structure as well.
Voidus Posted August 19, 2012 Posted August 19, 2012 The only thing that I can think of as a problem is that it might be slightly more difficult for the Kandra to ingest the internal structure and so memorize the positions of the muscles and it would probably take them a while longer because it's such a foreign structure to them but it would definitely be possible.
Aminar Posted August 19, 2012 Author Posted August 19, 2012 But arthropods don't use muscles. They use Hyrdraulics of a sort. Now I think a Kandra could still work, they are pretty fluid. In truth they might be better off in an exoskeleton, being closer to heir natural shape and all. I'm just curious how people see this working.
Eric Posted August 20, 2012 Posted August 20, 2012 It's my understanding that while some use both hydraulics and muscles, muscles are the universal feature, not the reverse. Even if that's not so, the kandra could still attach ligaments to either side of the interior to allow back and forth motion.
Aminar Posted August 20, 2012 Author Posted August 20, 2012 Cool. Just did more research. Wikipedia says, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arachnid. Noiw given that my arachnids are larger than usual I can assume they have evolved muscles to account for the fact oversized pneumatic pressure is scientifically sketchy anyways.
