The Pythagorean Theorem a^2 + b^2 = c^2 has infinitely many solutions, but there are no whole number solutions to a^3 + b^3 = c^3 or a^n + b^n = c^n for n greater than or equal to 3.

All the worlds yearly produced bananas could fit in all the worlds churches.

I don't know if this means we should make more bananas or make less churches. Or maybe less bananas or more churches???

Uhhhh facts:

Gerontologists are the most likely type of scientists to be killed by their field.

The sequence 1, 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, …, 1/n, 1/(n+1), … converges to 0. But in the cofinite topology, this sequence converges to all real numbers. And in the K-topology the sequence doesn’t converge at all. So the limit of a sequence depends on the topology you use.

If you pick up an ant in Sweden and place it in another colony, they'll all continue going about their lives. If you do this is the UK, the colony will kill the new ant.

Shakespeare had 3 children and 2 of them share names with characters in his Tragedies

Humans sleep for (or at least try to) around 1/3 of their lives.

It's gotta be the same species though...

Yes, though this specific difference is because of a species of moth found in the UK but not Sweden that impersonates ant larva (?) and steals resources, eventually depleting the colony, so ants in the UK have evolved to detect when something isn't part of their colony and attack it. Ants in Sweden haven't.

This was a specific species of ant but I can't for the life of me remember which, which is really annoying me now, so sorry for the not-that-useful fact

Huh interesting

Though I'd thought that ants everywhere (except species whose colonies can merge) are hostile to ants of other colonies, regardless of potential parasites?

larva

Larvae is the plural.

The first recorded autopsy in human history was performed on Julius Caesar. Yes, that Caesar. Mr. Human Pincushion himself. They were able to figure out which was the actually fatal blow.

speaking of Caesar, his last words aren’t known, but historians agree it probably wasn’t the sad and poetic “Et tu, Brute?” like Shakespeare suggested. It was probably something much more vindictive, with one theory being along the lines of “I’ll see you in Hell!”

Eusociality (social structure of a queen and soldiers, etc like in ants) has been found to be exhibited by one specific species of liver fluke, for some reason.

Not necessarily soldiers, but queens and workers

Oh wow cool

Eusociality has independently arisen more times in Hymenopterans than in the rest of life on Earth combined

Didn’t we discuss this exact thread in the Nightmare Bagel thread a few days ago?
