Eza cocked her head curiously upon seeing Fenna. Why was she here? She was pretty sure that Fenna was a good person, but had never been able to figure it out for sure. Best not to give her any information.

”I dunno!”

Eza’s eyes widened in fright for the slightest of moments, then narrowed in anger. This thing was trying to spike someone. She wished she had her daggers with her.

Eza barely blinked at the inhuman feats of strength by this stranger. After two years in the Alleys, sights like these weren’t particularly impressive anymore. He probably just had pewter or something, like Fenna.

She figured that since the man was pointing a gun at Fenna to stop her, she probably wasn’t going to be on their side. The monster seemed to be on her side somewhat, though Fenna didn’t seem to approve of him spiking people. Eza decided that leaving her in a jail cell with the thing was probably not going to kill her.

She quickly dumped the contents of the vial into her mouth, reasonably confident it wasn’t poisoned. She started to burn the iron slowly, desperately wanting to stoke the fire within her into an inferno but not wanting to run out of iron too quickly. The fog obscuring her thoughts cleared, her hands quit shaking, and faint blue lines sprung out from her chest. The emptiness rapidly faded away.

Eza shifted so that she was running next to the man rather than in front of him, then held her head sideways. She tried her best to keep track of the blue lines stretching both behind her and in front of her. She was incredibly tempted to yank on a particularly thick blue line up ahead she thought could support her weight, but she couldn’t just ditch this guy after he’d helped her. She knew how to potentially keep the monster from impaling them.

Ebonaryle, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison

Ebon saw Lux arrive, and began to hum the Rhythm of Executions. Other Fused used it rarely, only for when the blood was so close it could be tasted. To Ebon, it was second nature. And today, there would be blood.

"Listen," he calmly commanded Lux. "See that door?" He nodded towards the gates of the garrison. "I need you to go over there, and make the biggest distraction you can." He finally turned to the boy Radiant. "You may begin as soon as you'd like."

Lux, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison

Lux looked up at the man, and smiled.

Minutes later, he was at the garrison. Slinking around the outside, he focused on his lightweaving.

This better be good. Fractal, think you can help?

Who do you take me to be? Of course I can help.

Good.

And so, a man walked into the garrison. A short man, but undeniably a man.

And he was holding a lighter. He took it out, and lit it, and dropped it on the floor. The floor began to catch on fire, as it ran everywhere. Soon, the whole building was engulfed in flames. However, no one could feel anything.

Outside the garrison, Lux was huddled next to the building, letting Fractal pilot the man and the fire, and he was touching the building.

Coincidentally, the building thought of itself as 'one thing'.

He could use that.

He pushed his head towards the building, and fell into the world where it's all upside down.

I sink if I take too long. I better hurry.

HEY! BUILDING!

I am a garrison.

Yes, yes you are. But, do you like chaos?

I am a stable garrison.

I have a proposition for you.

I am a faithful garrison.

What would you say if I told you your officers weren't as faithful as you?

I... am an evil garrison?

No. You aren't evil, your officers are. They are harboring criminals.

Lux knew this would be a long shot. But he had to try.

The people you were built to hold, to bring justice too, your officers are helping.

My... Officers are evil?

Yes. They are the problem.

Garrisons bring justice. I am a good garrison.

And I know how to help you with that. How to help you bring justice to the criminals. Cause that is what your officers are. Criminals.

Garrisons are strong and mighty. They bring justice.

Just follow the soulcasting. A nudge, maybe a bit far, but you aren't changing, you are bringing justice.

Garrisons bring justice to criminals.

Yes they do. And you? You could be Smoke.

By the time Lux lifted up his head and ran over too his illusion, the building was enveloped in smoke. But there wasn't a building anymore. Now, there was only a fake fire, with a smoking figure of a building under it.

Hopefully Ebon can use this.

He better be able to.

also worth noting that the whole thing probably couldn’t become smoke, as a non-trivial amount of it is lined in aluminum. However, a solid enough portion of it could certainly go poof.

Thav, Smokestack

Thav emerged from a manhole, finding himself back in the middle of Smokestack. He hoisted himself up and rolled over onto his back, groaning. That was…a disaster.

Jerrin was going to be furious, especially when he found out Thav had shown their base to a total stranger, only tor that stranger to be captured by their enemies. Their location was almost certainly compromised, and Thav couldn’t even blame Aradan if he had given up the information.

Thav sat up, realizing he could still be in danger. In fact, the hideout could be under attack any moment. He stood up and burned bronze and steel to make sure his surroundings were clear.

@Koloss17, you could jump in here if you want.

Everyone still underground, we can try to steer over here. We can say there’s an exit in a building a few streets away from Thav.

Fenna, Underground

Still surprised by Eza’s presence, Fenna barely noticed Aradan pointing a gun at her, but she made no move to stop them as they ran out of the room.

How does this kid manage to always show up at the mist inconvenient time?

Mask, followed by Bairn and his thugs, strode into the room. He surveyed the broken cell, frowning. “Did they get out?” he demanded, his voice filled with displeasure.

”I can catch up,” Fenna said immediately, sheathing her dagger. “I need another weapon.” Mask jerked his head, and one of the thugs handed over his gun.

Fenna stores weight and dashed down the hallway after Aradan and Eza.

Saitaku, Underground

Saitaku glanced off in the direction the two had fled. The steelrunner was following, but Saitaku doubted she’d actually catch the other two. He wasn’t sure what past those two had, but it was obviously enough that the steelrunner hadn’t wanted to hurt them.

This entire thing was a mess. The organization too. First they had trouble with a simple police operation, then they let the Scadrian escape, and their own operatives weren’t willing to kill people they knew.

Saitaku fingered his spike, lightly tapping the sharp end. He decided to follow the steel-runner. He couldn’t match her speed, but the other two couldn’t be too far ahead. Unfortunately, his bronze spikes had been bent. So back to iron it was.

Aradan Liese, Underground, Unknown

Sprinting down the hallway, Aradan did not breathe hard. Nor, was he fatigued, or even a little tired. For that was the power of pewter. Glancing ahead, he saw guards file around a corner. About ten of them—all armed. I do not want to get in a big fight like the cavern. If that happens, I’ll probably be overwhelmed. “The exit, or at least what I believe to be the exit, is through a door on my left,” Aradan said, looking over to see if Eza had registered the information. Satisfied, he ran to the door and flung it open. Looking up, he saw a trapdoor with a lock. After a short burn of iron, Aradan flew up to it before it subsequently broke free. Grabbing on to the ladder, he climbed upwards. This looks like an abandoned building. It looks like we’re still in the Smokestacks—which is good I suppose. Looking downwards, he extended a hand to the prisoner and called, “Come up. Quickly, before they catch up."

Eza felt a bit silly when she saw the man fly up. Having vials with iron probably meant you could burn it. Immediately after feeling silly, she felt trepidation. Were he a full mistborn, he surely would’ve used steel or something to throw off the spike wielder. Patchwork abilities like that meant hemalurgy.

She hesitated for a brief moment, flaring her iron and narrowing her eyes in suspicion. She didn’t see any of the telltale wrong lines leading to spikes, nor a suspicious lack of them in areas where aluminum concealed them, but she did see a new sort of line. It was wrong, but more in a different-than-normal way than a sickly way. Odd.

Eza also noticed the sparkly gold rings on his fingers. They were shiny. Really, really shiny.

She finally took his hand and scaled the ladder after him. She couldn’t afford to be picky or indulge in some thievery right now. Maybe later.

Starseeker exited into the corridor. "Do we go back to the crater?" he asked. Cayansa glanced around to see if he was talking to anyone else. Believe it or not, I think he's asking you, Reyx laughed - a sound like clashing cymbals.

"Are we allowed to?" Cayansa said dubiously, then froze.

Flames crept under the door and shot along the walls at an alarming pace. "FIRE!" Cayansa shouted back to the room, taking a few paces back to avoid the sudden light. "FIRE! GET OUT!"

They grabbed Starseeker by the arm and started looking frantically for a window.

Uh, Cayansa... there's no heat.

They stopped at Reyx's uncertain statement, staring at the surprisingly rhythmic flickering on the walls. Reyx was right. Amid the panic of the moment and the shouts from elsewhere in the building, they'd nearly missed the lack of actual fire.

"...Lightweaving?" they muttered, reaching cautiously towards the flames.

At this point, the wall vanished too. Cayansa had time to curse three of the Heralds before what was practically a solid wall of smoke smacked them in the face and the list ended with choked spluttering. They crouched to the ground, shouting to Starseeker to do the same.

Limel, New Hallandren, Garrison

Limel's pen desperately scratched at any free piece of note paper he could find as the information came flooding in. For now, he let Midas direct the interrogation, still feeling a smidge of embarrassment from his earlier excitement and concentrated on not missing anything.

He organized his notes by speaker, and then info:

Cayansa (Truthwatcher):

  • Saw F
    • Injured?
  • Didn't speak to him

Kai (Windrunner):

  • Feisty
  • Interacted with F
    • No love for Crimson Breath
    • Didn't cause explosion

As Kai mentioned thinking the explosion was likely anti-breath, Limel muttered under his breath.

"Nope. Definitely anti -ight." But he didn't say anything louder.

Limel was still scrambling at his paper when the windrunner's spren appeared, and so he didn't even notice until a name caught his eye.

"...as did Ebon and the child radiant..."

Limel's head snapped up. Ebon. Could that be it? At long last, F's name? He tried to open his mouth to clarify, but the barrage continued, and so instead, he satisfied himself with a margin note and continued.

Windrunner Spren:

  • F = working with Perses?
    • Went into same Alley
    • Child Radiant followed

Starseeker (Returned Elsecaller):

  • Kai got Ebon voidlight
    • Why?

Then Kai said something that grabbed his attention.

Kai:

  • Ebon hiding from Perses?
  • Personal grudge with Crimson Breath?

Midas chose to leave the interrogation there, and turned to Limel. This time, Limel made sure to let him finish before interjecting.

"Actually, I do. For one of you in particular." He turned to the Windrunner. "Kai. You seem to have interacted with this Fused - Ebon, you call him - far more than any other witness has been able to divulge. Could you please recount your interaction with him in more detail? And, additionally..." he looked at all of them. "There is something you need to understand. However nice he seems, this Husked One is highly dangerous. Although it is true we do not know his motives, he has been often sighted alongside the Crimson Breath, and has been responsible for several deaths. He has been known to assault, and even kill, agents of the law. If you somehow interact with him again, proceed with extreme caution, and report back to us. The rest of you, besides Kai, may be dismissed." He looked to Midas, awaiting confirmation.

In the span of minutes, his information about his unknown target had exploded. Over the last six months, they had all doubted him, laughed at his pointless investigation. But now, Limel smiled. Finally, he was getting somewhere. And he would prove them all wrong.

Ebonaryle, Mistwarrens, Path towards the Herborium

In his Transported form, Ebon weaved through the crowds, periodically making sure Lux was behind him with the sense this form gave him. These days, he didn't have to worry about constables; the Mistwarrens were Perses', and Perses' alone.

Eventually, Ebon arrived at an unassuming alley - a real one. He turned into it, and after another 90 degree turn hid him completely from the road - a small nook at the back of the Alley designed for secrecy - he reformed. He turned around, and saw Lux catch up. Satisfied, he turned towards a wooden door on one of the walls - old, graffiti-stained, boring, the type that tended to lead to backrooms or nowhere important - and tapped on it three times, two slow, one quick. Immediately, something in the wooden structure clicked, and he pushed it open.

Ebon stepped into a damp hallway, and the smell of rich soil and greenery filled his nostrils. After Lux passed, he shut the door, and plunged them into near-darkness. The only light came from a bright room down the hall ahead of them. Ebon walked towards it confidently, and stepped into the Herborium.

The Herborium was a massive, artificially lit greenhouse, filled with a plethora of plant life from throughout the Cosmere. Rockbuds coexisted with verdant vines and Marewills, all thriving. Among the greenery strolled several figures in white lab coats, watering the plants here, snipping a sample from there. As Ebon entered, one of them walked up to him, gloved hands clutched before them, long hair tied back in a bun.

"Here for Hyvist?"

Ebon nodded, and the scientist wordlessly guided him to a doorway at the edge of the circular green. They waited outside, and Ebon carefully opened the door, ducking to step inside. Within the chamber, a Thaylen man sat at a circular desk surrounded by spanreeds, frantically scratching down notes and messages between them. Hyvist. As soon as he saw Ebon enter, the scholar looked up and smiled.

"Ahh, Ebonaryle! Pleasure to see you as always. Tell me, what brings you here today?" Ebon saw Hyvist spare a confused glance at Lux, but he made no mention. Ebon smiled back at him, and attuned the rhythm of exultation.

"What do you have of interest regarding the explosion in New Hallandren?" Ebon liked Hyvist because Perses didn't know about him. It was useful to have his own source, and since the Herborium was his main business, the informant's clientele was limited - and fully anonymous.

"Hyvist gave him a knowing smile. "Involved in that, where we?" He looked to his notes. "Ahh, let's see... It seems many of the witnesses have been taken in by the New Hallandren constabulary, including... well, this is interesting." His mustache twitched.

"What?" Asked Ebon.

"It seems the garrison has apprehended an operative of the Crimson Breath." At that, Ebon snapped to attention. The explosion... but of course. They wouldn't destroy all their own research. It was too valuable. One of them must have fleed... and gotten caught. Hyvist kept on rambling, but Ebon ignored him. Instead, he slapped some spheres on the desk in front of him, causing the Thaylen to jump.

"Your services are thanked." Then Ebon walked out, trusting Lux to follow. There was no time to waste. No, not when such an opportunity, so unexpectedly lucky, presented itself.

He had a garrison to crash.

Kaiden, New Hallendren, Garrison.

Kai glanced at the others as they left and Skye went with them. "Well Limel? What more do you want to know?"

To help? Reyx asked, sounding like broken thunder in a bottle - normally a sign they were horrified - as they flitted towards the exit. You mean we're coming back here again?

I mean... maybe. Cayansa shrugged. If we find Naher in this district, this would be a good place to report him. And if not...

No, that's a terrible idea, Reyx butted in. There was a pause in which they glittered hesitantly, then added, You're going to do it, aren't you?

"Hold your breath!" he said, drawing more stormlight before stopping his breathing.

Perses, Smokestacks

Perses strolled along the streets of the Smokestacks, absently hunting for a place to eat. There was still nothing worth eating in the Mistwarrens, unless you wanted street food. Technically, he was a wanted criminal in the Smokestacks. Practically, however, he had made it very clear to law enforcement that it would be unwise of them to mess with him.

As he wandered, he reached out with his senses. A few metalborn about, a few conversations, but none of them interesting. It was an unusual sight to have even a single area of Alleycity be boring, but he couldn't say he was complaining. Sometimes a little bit of boring was a nice change of pace.

suddenly, in a place he wasn't monitoring, a door flung open.

@Steel Speedster@Through the Living Mist@Lunamor@Koloss17

So much for a "boring area of Alleycity," he thought. With a quick scan, Perses noticed a few things. Most immediately, he noticed that the person that had just emerged was burning multiple metals. Unless he was a mistborn, that meant hemalurgy. With a brief but powerful flash of steelsight, he noticed something odd. Definitely not spikes. Medallions? They apparently hit Elendel shortly after he got taken to the Alleyverse, in his time, and they were so rare here that he had only encountered one or two in his stay. Very interesting.

The next thing he noticed was that the man was being followed. By the sounds of it, by some of the Smokestack constabulary. Great.

Ebonaryle, New Hallandren, Garrison

Ebon waited till the outer walls turned to smoke, and shifted. In his transported form, he could view the environment around him as he slipped from the roof to the floor and into the smoke, a dim light among the flickering flames no one would think to look twice at. He heard the screams of the constables, saw their forms racing through the fog. Saw them race towards Lux. Despite him, he felt a weird hope for the boy to escape. Even weirder was when he realized the thought of Lux being interrogated hadn’t even crossed his mind.

After a matter of seconds, Ebon reached the interior wall. Lined with aluminum for this very purpose, Lux hadn’t been able to affect it. Ebon watched as a gate opened in the wall. Four guards ran out of it, decked in armor. Two carried guns. As the last one moved to close the door, Ebon wrapped around his legs and slipped through the crack before it sealed. Then the door clicked shut behind him, and he reformed.

Ebon looked around. In here, there was little smoke. It was a well lit passageway, and alarms were going off. His mind flashed back to the warehouse. The explosion.

He had to move.

Ebon began walking, then running down the corridor. There was no point in hiding anymore. Their cameras had already detected him; with more time, he could’ve disarmed them, but time was not on his side. He turned a corner. The first officer he reached wasn’t alerted of his presence, and let out a yelp as the knife was buried in her back. The second - a scribe, he looked like - tried to run, but Ebon was on him in a second. He noticed something around the body’s neck, and pulled it off to get a closer look. It was a tag, with the officer’s face on it. Ebon flipped it over. Another picture, of the officer, smiling, standing next to a little girl. Ebon ripped the picture out, and pulled out the slip tucked in behind it. A map of the garrison. He smiled, and began to run towards the holding cells. Footsteps chased him. The alarms continued to ring, louder and louder.

”Yes. Could you please describe the Fused’s physical appearance with as much detail as possible?” He flipped to a blank page in his notes, and leaned forward attently. Then the walls turned to smoke.

As the others all looked around, Limel jumped. Then he remembered the procedure.

”Everyone, follow me!” No one heard him. He had to raise his voice. He took a deep breath, then yelled. “LISTEN.” Everyone turned to him. Huh. His cheeks blushed. That had worked.

”Don’t panic. The garrison is prepared to face this kind of threat. While this is inconvenient, I assure you, the situation is under control. We just need to follow procedure.” The manual instructions came out of his mouth in a flood, as his mind raced. What was it they had to do again? Oh, yes. “I will guide you to the core of the garrison. It is lined with aluminum, and protected. Follow me.” Limel looked at the anxious faces, then at the smoke and light around them. It was daunting. Gripping his notes as stiffly as he could in his sweaty hands, wishing he’d brought a bag, Limel began to walk into the fog.

Thav, Smokestack

Thav froze as he felt an Allomantic signature nearby. Whoever it was was burning multiple metals. Thav could make out steel and bronze. That meant would have detected him as well. More than one metal almost certainly meant Hemalurgy. Had he been tracked?

Thav tapped zinc, thinking through his options, before extinguishing his metals. He was now blind to the other Allomancer's movements, but hopefully they were just as blind to his.

Fenna, Underground

Dashing down the hall, Fenna saw Aradan and Eza reach a ladder. With a flare of pewter, she pushed herself even faster. Unfortunately, while her light weight made it easier to propel herself, it also made her more susceptible to drag, limiting her speed.

As she reached the end of the hallway, she saw Eza disappear through a trapdoor at the top of the ladder. With a flare of pewter, Fenna launched herself upward, grabbing onto the rim of the trapdoor.

Considering Fenna is tapping speed, and that the other two have a decent head start, unless they stop soon, Saitaku isn’t going to be able to catch up.

That said, Saitaku could also get the direction they went wrong as well and get sidetracked.

But for now, at least, Saitaku isn’t going to be able contribute much

Not that it changes much, but Fenna doesn't tap speed. She's a Skimmer, not a Steelrunner, so she's storing weight instead. Normally that doesn't make you faster because your strength is diminished proportionately, but Fenna is also a Pewterarm, so she overcomes that limitation, which allows her to run extremely fast (but without enhanced reflexes other than those already granted by pewter.)

Either way, Saitaku could probably catch up if you want. He might just be a bit late. I would imagine he's fairly fast as well since he has all that extra strength from H-iron. Either way works for me.

Eza flinched when she heard the thud of something impacting against the rim of the trapdoor. Based on some tiny lines leading to pewter dust below her, that was Fenna. She resisted the urge to slam the trapdoor shut on her fingers. She might need to rely on Fenna’s mercy later.

She looked over at the person in the street when she heard her rescuer question him. He was spiked, one in each eye. Those were familiar spikes.

Perses.

She knew this creature. The first thing that she’d seen him do was murder people. The last thing that she’d seen him do was order monsters to murder people. The fighting had destroyed the constabulary it took place in, causing it to collapse on most of the people the monsters hadn’t killed. One of them was her friend.

This was the monster who had killed Eighth. Her hands tightened into fists, and she again wished for her daggers. She wondered how hard it would be to pry the spikes from his eye sockets out with her fingernails.

Then she looked at the man next to her, the person who had risked his freedom, and probably life, to rescue her. If she tried to strike out at Perses, he’d surely try to kill them both, and most likely succeed. She wouldn’t let him kill this man too.

Eza looked up at her rescuer, speaking softly but urgently.

“That man is more dangerous than those behind us. We need to leave now.”

She looked around, orienting herself. She recognized the clothing shop across the street- she’d nabbed a particularly nice belt buckle from it.

“I know where to go.”

Midas, New Hallandren, Garrison

The entire garrison was in chaos. An attack like this had happened before, quite recently in fact. But the people who had done that weren't soulcasters. With how paranoid the guard was lately, the only reason Midas could fathom such a thing could happen was someone that had an inside source. However, such a thing wasn't worth worrying about right now.

Most of the enforcers were off on patrol, but they would be back any minute now that the awakened alarms had gone off. Each officer had a small chip that reacted immediately if there was an emergency like this, pinging them to return to base. It was installed in the standard uniform quite recently, and had never actually been used until now. Midas hoped it had worked.

Until then, it was up to him to stall the intruders until backup arrived. Heading to the prison center, which mercifully remained intact due to the aluminum lining, he quickly was face to face with the intruder. Black, marbled skin, the intruder ran with what appeared to be murderous intent, straight at him. Though he had only read reports of him, and seen the man in low quality camera feed, he knew that this fused was Ebon.

Wasting no time, Midas flung his awakened rope-dart at the fused, hastily commanding it to go for the eyes, along with sending a separate command to the awakened grenades under his shirt to arm themselves.

Quote

I'm largely planning on having all the awakened objects he has to be described as they are used, as he is covered head to toe with awakenable material. Assume his cape has the standard protect me command, and he has a whole bunch of tricks up his sleeves. If you want me to come up with a catalogue of what he has on him, I certainly can, though the list will be quite long.

A girl's, who burned iron brighter than any person he had ever encountered. Directing his query at the girl, whose name he had since forgot, he spoke with more genuine curiosity than he expected.

"Don't I know you?"

By the time the words escaped his lips, he remembered where he knew her from. An old acquaintance of his had brought her along, to a heist so very long ago. "You're Asylum's kid, aren't you?"

Perses and Asylum didn’t exactly end things on the best of terms, considering that the former had blown a hole in the latter’s head. Hopefully his animosity towards them didn’t extend to her. She’d outright thanked him for killing Asylum, so maybe that counted for something.

Starseeker, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison

Starseeker followed Limel slowly, his eyebrows furrowed as he focused his Life Sense on two beings with considerable levels of Investiture. Eventually, he realised that they were Ebon and Midas, and he felt Midas' Investiture drop. Awakening.

Is Limel leading them towards Ebon and Midas, or another way?

Cayansa, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison

The late arrival was calling instructions over the smoke like a rapidly flashing spanreed - inefficient, but at least you knew someone was there. Cayansa covered their mouth with their sleeve and followed. Aluminium? Again? What is it?

Perses, Smokestack

Perses, quite frankly, had no interest in getting involved in any of what was going on. That was, until he noticed that he recognized one of their voices.

Reyx, New Hallandren, New Hallandren Garrison

Reyx hovered in the smoke, invisible to the eye but, unfortunately, well aware there were people around who could detect Investiture. Midas and Ebon were outside the prison centre; the Fused already had traces of blood on his hands.

Oh. Reyx thought, followed by, He'll be fine, followed by, Both of these people have been nothing but kind, even if one's a Fused and the Garrison weren't the most useful. Why is everything so complicated?

... Where's the Soulcaster, anyway?

The mistspren hesitated, looking at the conflict that was unfolding, then began to focus on detecting other uses of Investiture nearby - difficult, given the amount of ... Awakening, had they called it? But most of that was from inside the Garrison. There was a faint pulse from where one of the outside walls had been.
