I noticed that this sadly didn't have a topic. I don't know who's interested in PHM but it's a really good book.

@Ookla the Wallfacer

And for anyone else, what is your favorite part of the book?

I love this book

Idk how well I remember it tho, it's been a hot minute since I read it

You should read it again before the movie comes out. I just finished the book again last night.

It comes out in April? The trailers are incredible. Ryan Gosling is playing Ryland Grace so it's sure to be fun.

Don't spoil anything!

I'm probably going to finish the book on Friday or something.

Now, one thing I don't understand is

Spoiler

When they first said that Tau Ceti was the only star in the area that wasn't infected, I immediately thought that it just didn't have a planet with CO2. Occam's Razor agrees with me. But no one even mentioned this, except for a passing thought of Grace's when he was already in the Tau Ceti system.

It would be a disaster if they spent all that time working on and executing PHM, only to find that the Tau Ceti system just doesn't have high amounts of CO2. Maybe when the beetles returned, they'd have to find a way to crash Venus into the Sun

I enjoyed P:HM. Not quite as good as Martian, to me; but significantly better than Artemis (which I finished but did not enjoy).

Spoiler

I had a few grumbles with the end and unclosed plot arcs/holes that degraded my enjoyment.

Hope to see the movie eventually, likely on DVD.

Thank you! Somebody else who liked the Martian better!

I have a friend who can quote like half the book, he's obsessed with it.

Its a good sci-fi book but not as good as Bobiverse (best sci-fi series).

I have a question for the more scientific inclined. Part of the early parts of the book, that astrophage moves throughout the room, and the main characters loses it, I recall, he's able to find it and count it.

I've never actually used a microscope before, but is that BS? Like if you gave me a petri dish with a bacteria and I somehow flung that bacteria. There's no freaking way I'm finding that individual bacteria again, right?

Or is that something I am supposed to turn my brain off to enjoy the story?

Loved the book, cant wait for the movie. ALthough there is some concerning discouse on how spoilery the trailer is. I hope its a hit.

Ok, but the bacteria is not generally hot. With the thermal "glasses" he could see a general area where they could be, and he knew that they needed to be in the center of that, so it narrows down the search area again.

Just saw the movie a few days ago, didn't really like it.

I did like the more scientific experimental parts though, and I'm told that the book has more of that. Unfortunately, I'm not really the type to consume the original media after viewing an adaptation (I did not know it was a book first when I watched it.)
