This may be a very stupid question, but why didn't he just go home? What does this tell us about Roshar? Sure he does not want to bring harm to the people he cares about. But why does he have to worry?

Isn't Sigzil a war hero? The man who kept the Fused from taking Narak? What does this tell us about Roshar? Is the Night Brigade that powerful? Or can we draw conclusions about the rulers of Roshar? Would they simply hand him over and take the money, because they are not on his side?

Yes, the Night Brigade is that powerful, in fact Nomad knows no force more dangerous than them. It was said that the Night Brigade is capable of destroying life on planets and Nomad was too afraid to risk the life of his friends and loved ones to return to Roshar. No matter if they could destroy Roshar or not, just the threat of bringing a devastating war to it was enough to keep Nomad at bay. Plus Roshar would be the one place the Night Brigade would be watching very closely, so the moment he sets his foot there they would know it immediately and come right after him, therefore he would lose any time advantage he had while being on the run.

TSM ch 27:

Quote

“How dangerous are they?” she asked.

“I know of no force more dangerous. They have been known to leave entire planets desolate. Fortunately the Night Brigade aren’t mindless pillagers. They’re a precision force and will do whatever their contract—or in this case, their goal—demands.”
