Would Shardplate Ornamentations Remain Behind When Dismissed?

Question

Posted

In The Way of Kings, it mentions that Adolin had his Plate augmented by having it painted blue and having extra bits of metal welded on to make it look more fearsome. Later on, when he becomes Unoathed, his plate essentially reactivates, and it appears Unoathed plate can be summoned and dismissed like ordinary plate since it appears on the soon-to-be Unoathed in the Azimir palace hallway. So would the paint and extra metal dismiss and reappear along with the Plate as if it were originally part of the Plate, or would Adolin, upon dismissing his Plate for the first time, find himself standing in a bizarre cocoon of dried paint with chunks of metal clattering down around him?

We do not know yet, and I cannot find any WoBs on this topic yet. That said, it may depend on how long the ornamentation has been there and if the Identity of the Plate now views it as part of the Plate. Also, in theory, the now-reponsive plate should be able to adjust form to mimic the ornamentation even if it does fall off (though the Color is likely tied to the type of plate-spren that comprise the armor).

Hope that helps

This raises a new question: can the living-but-not-Radiant Shardblades of the Unoathed shapechange, the way Syl does for Kaladin (become a spear, a shield, a big hammer ...)?
