ONLY READ THIS IF YOU HAVE READ SA5 AND SUNLIT MAN but dont spoil SA5 or Sunlit Man for me.

I’ve read about 40% of The Sunlit Man, but that was a few months ago. Now that Wind and Truth is out, I want to continue with either book — but I’ll have to either re-read Sunlit Man and finish it, or start Wind and Truth. I’m trying to decide which to do.

Before Wind and Truth released, everyone recommended reading Sunlit Man first. But after W&T came out, I’ve seen people say they wish they’d read Sunlit Man afterward. I think that’s because Sigzil/Nomad has some kind of decision to make in Wind and Truth, and reading Sunlit Man might spoil that. I’m not sure exactly how, and I’d like to keep it that way.

So here’s where I’m at:

I’ve read 40% of Sunlit Man already (some time ago).

I’m trying to decide:

Should I re-start Sunlit Man now, finish it, then read Wind and Truth (assuming I’ve already passed the “reveal” everyone refers to)?

Or should I start Wind and Truth now, then come back to Sunlit Man later if I haven’t yet reached the part that’s relevant?

I think the reveal is about Sigzil/Nomad using a Dawnshard, which messed up his bond with his spren, and that he’s being hunted — but that’s all I know.

So what would you recommend? Should I continue Sunlit Man or jump into Wind and Truth first?

Uhhh No Spoilers: Read WaT first. If you don't remember enough of Sunlit Man to have to re-read it, then you dont know the spoiler thing. I don't think it is the Dawnshard. But maybe.

There are lots of spoilers in Sunlit Man, but you've got many of them by reading 40% (notably "Sigzil is alive after the Stormlight Archive").

I think either reading order is great, honestly. I enjoyed SM more, personally, but having said that I have no idea whether you would want to read the better or worse book first, so ....

This is me. Having read both, I recommend to friends that saving Sunlit Man until after Wind and Truth is more likely to result in a better reading experience.

Spoilers (for those that have read the books and want to understand my reasoning):

Spoiler

I spent all of Wind and Truth's Sigzil segments knowing he would fail and that he would lose his bond to Vienta - for me, that effectively ruined all of the Shattered Plains segments of the story. Even if I didn't know the detials, knowing what I did from TSM feels like it had an adverse effect on my ability to enjoy that plot arc - or even care about Sigzil's relationship with Vienta who first "appears" in this book when you already know it ends badly.

That said, if you have already read part of Sunlit Man then the order may not matter - depending on what you remember and how well.

What I know/remember

  • Sigzil is alive and In the far future
  • Sigzil spren is messed up/maybe dead and functions weird now
  • Since Sigzil can not hit people like a certain person in Secret History he must have used a dawnshard
  • People are after him because he might know where the dawnshard he once held is
  • In WaT all I know is Sigzil has a plot line and a decision he has to make all book but that is it.

I would recommend WaT first, and I think you would be happy to find the Easter Eggs that foreshadow what you remember.

Just a possible interpretation.
