Elite01 Posted March 4, 2025 Posted March 4, 2025 (edited) When Adolin is defending Azir, the archers use something called the "Heavenly One protocol." Where the heavenly ones attacking the archers had been doused in oil and shot with flaming arrows. Mainly so the fire and light would disorient them as they flew. This reminded me of Hazekiller countermeasures from Mistborn so here is the question. What is the best way to counter each Brand of Fused without using a radiant? And I know anti-light would work on all of the Fused but besides that what protocols could armies use. The brands are Deepest ones (Cohesion)- maybe some kind of net that is harder for them to phase through? We at least know aluminum can be used to prevent them from popping out. Devastating ones (divison) Flowing ones (abrasion) Magnified ones (Progression) Masked ones (Illumination) - I think some kind of alerter fabrial could help armies detect Fused spies Altered ones (Transformation) Husked ones (Transportation) Focused ones (Tension) But I don't have any ideas for countermeasures right now, any ideas? Lopens Tenth Cousin he/him Posted March 6, 2025 Posted March 6, 2025 I think possibly with the flowing ones, to at least make them less maneuverable, you could pour something with a high amount of viscosity like Tar onto the ground so they aren't allowed to slide around as easily. They might move as fast or maybe a little faster than a normal person, but their movement should be greatly limited. 1
Elite01 Posted March 7, 2025 Author Posted March 7, 2025 That would be a good one or a trip wire of some kind would be a good way to stop them 1
therunner he/him Posted March 10, 2025 Posted March 10, 2025 Ohh, nice idea! Generally for lot of the movement based (Heavenly, Flowing, Deepest) I would say weighted net (possibly of Aluminum) is the best bet, it will at minimum get in the way and prove hindrance, at best it will stop them for a moment providing opening for attack. Heavenly ones getting set on fire is smart, as dousing flames would require them to stop. Deepest Ones, I would try luring onto a platform made out of e.g. wood, and then lift it (like Navani's archer platforms), that way Deepest One is rendered effectively powerless. Aluminum nets would also be a good option. Generally, you want to get them off the ground. Flowing Ones (outside of nets), I would go with pouring liquids of various viscosity on the ground, so they would have to change their Abrasion in difficult to predict ways, to trip them up. Masked Ones, some alerter fabrial would be necessary at minimum, or white sand (though surgebinders and fabrials make it spotty). Generally, don't trust who you don't know, and set up code phrases to verify identities. Husked Ones will be tough, as they can basically teleport dodge/attack. Luring them into a room with thick walls, and then setting it on fire at the cost of some troops might be only option. Altered Ones attack from distance (to keep away from any poisonous gas they might exhale), and ideally from multiple directions at once. Magnified Ones, acid, fire, generally anything that does a lot of damage and sticks to the person. Devastating Ones, I don't know, we haven't really seen much of them. Focused Ones, just run, non-Surgebinders cannot do anything to them. You can set them on fire to annoy them a bit. 5
Elite01 Posted March 10, 2025 Author Posted March 10, 2025 (edited) Finding ways to raise deepest ones is clever. The more consistent solution would be to have platforms nearby for your army to use. Such as having archers on stone walls, then when deepest ones show up hit the "Deepest one protocol" button to activate fabrials to raise them and get them out of danger. Not as damaging to the deepest ones but easier to control and execute. I wonder if there is a way to take advantage of the husked ones when they leave a body, could you trap that in a gem? or a aluminum box? I was also wondering about playing the noise of anti-light. Raboniel and Rlain just said it felt wrong and uncomfortable, so anything to put your enemy off their game is helpful but I wonder if husked ones are more in the cognitive realm while they are ribbons of light so maybe the noise would affect them more? Magnified ones - projectiles or shrapnel might slow down their healing/growth. Like how one would fight a bloodmaker in mistborn. Weapons with hooks might slow them down, siver and aluminum would be a plus. Edited March 10, 2025 by Elite01 improve 3
Atlas333 Posted March 18, 2025 Posted March 18, 2025 Didn't the put wooden planks down to stop the deepest ones at the Shattered Plains? That may be a protocol. For Husked, it might just be bet to have everyone get in pairs/small groups to cover each others backs. 3
Elite01 Posted March 19, 2025 Author Posted March 19, 2025 That is true about the Deepest ones, I just got to that part in my read through and they mention placing wood floors to slow them down, Magnified ones later destroy them to help the deepest ones, fighting in pairs is also a simple way to help with husked ones, I feel like the main advantage of a husked one is suprise, what about some kind of alerter fabrial to warn you when its behind you?
Teravangian Posted April 3, 2025 Posted April 3, 2025 For the deepest ones and masked ones, having >!Taldain Sand!< would be incredibly useful, and with flowing ones and heavenly ones, a confined environment would really hurt the full use of their powers. The Opposite would be true of the devastating ones, altered ones, and focused ones. I'd suggest using the net on the focused ones actually.
Ashbringer he/him Posted April 5, 2025 Posted April 5, 2025 You might be able to bring down a Magnified One using ropes or chains, if used while they’re healing - as that might leave the carapace healing over the chain to stick to them. Husked, probably the best bet would be to have a sniper watching their spren-form ready to shoot them (preferably with something like a Grandbow) when they appear. Masked, physical contact - I think they just make visual/audio illusions so just give people a pat-down or something. Focused… depends what it costs them to coil up. Probably just run. Maybe hit them with a catapult, and then run. 1
