Mimic other forms of Investiture? Specifically ones that generally need a pre-existing Bond or Connection?

For instance; could Nightblood act as a pen to write Aons with despite not being an Elantrian? Or speak to the soul of an object to mimic the effect of a Soulstamp?

Going even further; could Nightblood mimic Allomancy?

Partially asking to see if I'm wrong in my understanding of Nightblood giving Szeth surges

Nightblood was originally designed to mimic Shardblades, but it accessing Surgebinding is completely new.

Questioner

I was wondering, is Nightblood a Shardblade?

Brandon Sanderson

Nightblood is an attempt by someone who didn’t know how Shardblades were made to create a Shardblade using a different magic system.

It think these would be within the realm of reason, though the sword would need to learn them ahead of time just as it did with Surgebinding. I think more complex powers, like AonDor or Forgery would be harder though and would take more time.

I do think it more likely that it would simply grant those abilities to the person they Bonded instead of being used as a stamp or AonDor pen though, just like an Honorblade or Unsealed Metalmind grants their powers to others.

Actually, Nightblood kind of already does this in some way with their emotional manipulation, though I think it's more a natural ability and less a direct mimicry. But yes, that should be plausible I think.

Questioner

Can you tell me about the mechanics of Nightblood's revulsion vs. compulsion magic?

Brandon Sanderson

What do you want to know?

Questioner

Is it like Rioting? Like in--

Brandon Sanderson

Yes, Rioting is a good parallel to that.

Questioner

Is agency being taken away?

Brandon Sanderson

I wouldn't say agency is taken away but it depends on how you view Rioting, right? If you are enhancing someone's emotions-- Here is the question for you. If someone is feeling depressed, is their agency being taken away? And this is a question that our society has a really bad answer to, right? So if you are being Rioted, strict-line I would say no, your agency isn't being taken away, but you are certainly under the influence of another force which is taking certain emotions you might have and emphasizing them a great deal.

Questioner

So is it the same kind of push that makes a virtuous person want to vomit?

Brandon Sanderson

Virtuous might be the wrong way to put it. But yes, that sort of thing is related. It's related to Nightblood and it's related to how he was created and all of those sorts of things.

My cracktheory is that Nightblood's creation involved The Night in some way. Perhaps that connection to "night essence" allows the mimicking. Or perhaps the Night is sufficiently connected to Roshar to allow surges to be used.
