Craiko she/her Posted February 8, 2025 Posted February 8, 2025 Ok, so does it only bother me that no time is dedicated to even a mention of Kaladin's parents and brother when he decides to become a herald ? No one but him and the other heralds (and Syl) know that he's actually alive, everyone else will believe him actually dead. To be clear I'm not opposed to him becoming a herald, but he doesn't spare a thought to anyone at all possibly grieving him. That feels like an oversight to me. I hope this will be adressed in Books 6-10. 2

My take for that chapter was that timing didn;t leave much time or space for rumination. That said, it certainly seems very beleivable to me - Lirin and Hesina have barely been a part of Kal's life for years. The re-established contact barely a year ago when Kaladin first went back to Hearthstone. They've been involved in each other's life again for a efw weeks, since the Hearthstone refugees came to the Tower (right before the invasion). Kal and Lirin have been repairing their relationship for a couple days, when Lirin finally decided to limit how abusively he treats his son. In my decades of military service and years of time deployed, I can say that in my experience; when the situation is tense and time-constricted, compartmentalization is common, and thoughts of home are usually not on your mind until the situation calms enough to allow one to relax. 5

Quote Kaladin turned to see Nale gingerly lowering Szeth, unconscious, to the ground. “You don’t know what you’re saying,” Nale said. “Ishar’s plan to protect our minds might not work. We could be going to torture. Even if not … it could be centuries until we return. Everyone you know and love will be dead by then.” Kaladin’s heart trembled. Bridge Four … his family … WaT chapter 142. 8
