A Thread of All My Favorite Arcanum Bits

I've been reading the Arcanum A lot lately and making a little treasure trove of my favorite parts hee hee. Happy to share them with y'all! Feel free to post your own in the replies!

The first few entries will be screenshots of the Arcanum but going forward I'll use the Copy Text + Link method (I don't wanna go back and find all the ones I currently have again 😅

Still getting used to the formatting of forum space so pls go easy on me if I look like a total Noob 💖

Lift:

Spoiler
Quote

Questioner

Is there any relationship between the Lift’s ability to eat food and create Stormlight [Lifelight] and Scadrians’ ability to eat metal and burn it?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes.

Dragonsteel Nexus 2024 (Dec. 5, 2024)

Related, but longer:

Quote

Argent

Does Lift turn food into Investiture directly or is it similar to the metals on--

Brandon Sanderson

Similar to the metals.

Argent

So like a gate?

Brandon Sanderson

Yes.

Argent

Okay, that's good to know.

Brandon Sanderson

She can metabolize-- She can draw-- It's not actually the food, it's-- It's not like the metals, not exactly. It's not-- What she can do is she can metabolize into Investiture instead of sugar. Does that make sense?

Argent

Yeah.

Brandon Sanderson

We metabolize food into sugar. She can metabolize it into Investiture. Does that make sense?

Argent

That makes a lot of sense. So if she eats--

Brandon Sanderson

She's got to have a blood sugar spike.

Argent

So if she eats like a cake it will give her more Investiture--

Brandon Sanderson

Faster. It will give her faster.

Argent

Whereas if she eats a vegetable...

Brandon Sanderson

Vegetable... More calories is going to equal more. But the better comparison would be a sausage and bread. Because bread is a fast blood sugar spike and the sausage is not. And that's how I'm working in my head. It's kind of a magical version of a blood sugar spike and I have it happen to her faster than it could happen. Like normally you eat a piece of bread and your blood sugar spikes in a half hour, it's going to go faster for Lift.

Argent

Hers is like five minutes.

Brandon Sanderson

Hers is like five minutes, but a sausage would be slower.

Firefight Chicago signing (Feb. 20, 2015)

Shallan:

Spoiler

Questioner

Shallan has bonded two spren. Is it possible for a spren to bond two people?

Brandon Sanderson

This is theoretically possible.

Dragonsteel Nexus 2024 (Dec. 5, 2024)

Sigzil:

Spoiler

ant_tree (paraphrased)

Can you give me a fun fact about Sigzil?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

He knows how to read Alethi women's script. He learned it in school.

C2E2 2024 (April 26, 2024)

Sazed:

Spoiler

Thanatos17901

If Sazed were to die, would he drop the Shards Ruin and Preservation, or would he drop the Shard Harmony?

Brandon Sanderson

Excellent question. The shards are now intermingled, and would take effort to split apart. He would drop Harmony. (This is what Odium feared would happen, by the way.)

/r/fantasy AMA 2013 (April 23, 2013)

(Mistborn Era 1 Spoilers)

In Cosmere discussion, you do not need to spoiler tag older material - all Preview material and any new releases need to be tagged (and prefereably in the correct Spoiler Zone for new releases). In a specific section (such as the Stormlight Archive Forum) then this would need a spoiler tag - except the Mistborn Forum. Each series Forum must tag and cover all spoilers outside of that section's stories. Spoiler Policy:

Spoiler

Spoiler and Unpublished Works Policy

  • Unpublished work that has not been publicly released by Brandon and his team (including the original manuscript of Dragonsteel), may not be discussed on any 17th Shard platform.
    • Publicly available chapters or samples of unpublished work may be only discussed in the appropriate forum or Discord channel.
  • If in a book specific forum or channel, you wish to refer to another series please use spoiler markup or, if appropriate, move to a full spoiler channel. A reference to what the spoiler is related to, should also be included. (eg. OB (SPOILER))
    • Forum: The ‘eye’ button will create a spoiler box in which text and images can be added.
    • Discord: Add || to either side of a sentence without spaces at the beginning or end (eg. ||spoilers||)

Forum

  • Stick to the appropriate forum. Check forum board description if you are unsure.
    • Spoiler topics posted in non-spoiler forums must contain ‘Spoiler’ in the topic title.
  • New books can be discussed without spoiler tags in the dedicated new book subforum/area only.
    • Topic titles should not contain spoilers
    • You are strongly encouraged to post topics on new works in the new book subforum/area only. If you must reference something in a spoiler period outside those forums, you must spoiler tag it.

<snip>

Spoiler Period and Spoiler Period Lengths for Forums and Discord:

  • Cosmere novels - six months
  • Cosmere everything else - three months
  • Non-cosmere novels - three months
  • Non-cosmere everything else - one month

Hope that helps

Ahoymatey

Brandon, I just wanted to confirm that you did have a couple of cameos as Slowswift? Or was that mean to be someone else?

Chaos

I'm pretty sure Slowswift is Hoid. The Ars Arcanum says he "bears a striking resemblance to a storyteller", which I take to mean Hoid.

Brandon Sanderson

Slowswift is an homage to Grandpa Tolkien. A study of his personality will reveal why that name was chosen for him.

Hoid appears in that same chapter, but Vin doesn't meet him. Something he does spooks her. She's just too darn observant for her own good.

Footnote: This is the first time Brandon mentions Hoid outside of the books themselves.
Hero of Ages Q&A - Time Waster's Guide (Oct. 15, 2008)

FIRST MENTION OF HOID FOUND. I'm digging deep into the archives and reading all the lore. I don't care if it takes me a billion years.

Spoiler

Qarlin

Who were Ruin and Preservation? I mean, when they died, they had bodies, like Vin. And you went as far as to describe their hair color (Red and Black, respectively). Preservation even had a prominent nose. Why describe their dead bodies, if they weren't at one time mortals themselves? They created humans, but were at one time human themselves?

Brandon Sanderson

RAFO. (Sorry.)

Hero of Ages Q&A - Time Waster's Guide (Oct. 15, 2008)

Mistborn : Hero of Ages : Preservation : Ruin

Hee hee it's so cool to see how much we know now, when at the time Brandon was RAFOing whether or not Preservation and Ruin had been humans themselves

How many moons circle Scadrial, i.e. when the planet was moved were the moons moved as well?

Brandon Sanderson

Scadrial has no moons. I think I let slip the phrase "he's mooning over her" somewhere in the third book, but that is just a translation quirk to English. These people have no concept of a moon. There is a very bright star patch, however, covering much of the sky—much brighter than on Earth.

https://wob.coppermind.net/events/243/#e6089

It amazes me that I never considered someone writing a world without a moon until I realized Scadrial has no moon. With how much sci-fi I consume I'm surprised I never thought about it sooner

Spoiler

Questioner (paraphrased)

Was Elantris intended to be a zombie story?

Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased)

Yes, but he disguised it so that it would not be typecast as a horror story by potential readers. He wanted to do a story about heroic zombies, since he had never heard of such a tale.
