can i have... time magic? but seriously more like fasst foward and slow down... not actual time travel... except when plot wants.... also can i be a physics of magic teacher...

I'm gonna go on a limb, and say NO TIME TRAVEL UNLESS EVERYONE INVOLVED AGREES. It's messy and screws with agency.

can we have multiple magic systems @Argenti

I mean we could, but we should make them connected. Having to many magic systems that don't interact with each other feels disjointed, and doesn't make tooo much sense, especlly if we're approaching it from an academic standpoint.

On an aside, do we want magic highschool, or magic college.

Yeah but if they can already do their own gimmick or have their own gimmick how will someone teach them their gimmick

Spoiler

That's the most gimmicks I've ever said in a single sentence

well a gimmick that's their thing but they also learn other magic

I agree. Like, you might be good at one thing, but in the way some people are good at math.

okay

how about transforming substances into other things, like Soulcasting? broad and versatile

How about

We do this in the Google doc

So I don't have to keep scrolling back

That is one brand of magic and it is cool

Ooh! Can I do space magic? Like teleportation and stuff, not stars. It fits our vibe so far, I think.

What if we do magic that effects the basic laws of reality (WE MUST KEEP IR SEPARATED FROM THE SURGES!)

I hate to say it, but math magic could fit. Oh you wanna change gravity? Well you gotta start from the bottom up. Change Newton's Law of Universal Gravitation.

MAGIC COLLEGE! I must justify my necromancy.

To connect it to that sort of magic system, uh…

OH!

I CAN MAKE IT EVEN MORE IMMORAL!

The necromancer stores its “soul”, which is really just all the energy it will generate/use in its future (not including potential descendants), and then pops that energy elsewhere!

I make it more energy focused, and let’s see if ya can see the even more immoral thing.

Interesting! I changed my mind. I think I’ll teach temperature-independent phase changes, rather than teleportation. Or specialize in that magic and teach applied magic and physics.
Do we want a masquerade (e.i. normal people don’t know about magic)? Magic items? Wands? Any costs to using magic?

Okay, so on the itinerary

ITINERARY:

HS or College

Public or Private

What kind of Magic

Is magic a core class and do they take like ELA, Science, and Math classes

Are there different brands of magic, similar to how Biology and Chemistry are under "Science"

What magicks (we need something concrete, like Allomancy is)

Is this on earth

Boarding school or not

What is the age range

Are there sports

Would there be electives like magic art

Is there a conflict

Are there different houses

---

Am I missing anything?

I vote College, cus than you can get a degree in Graviturgy, from the [INSERT NAME] School of gravitational studies.

If we go for college, this doesn't matter nearly as much. Doesn't effect much. If we go for Highschool, private school might drag us into the HP pit.

I think math magic would be good, but if you all want something else, that's fine too.

14 minutes ago, Ancient Elantrian said:

Yes, and Yes. Why? Because it's funny and people do need more than magic.

I'd say no, hesitantly.  I think modern-earth-like would be fun, and help throw off more Harry Potter.

If college, yes, if highschool... Rowling is in our walls.

17 minutes ago, Ancient Elantrian said:

YES. I can imagine things like... magic snowglobes frozen time, Oils floating in the air that never dissipate. Magic art, magic creative writing (You could integrate an equation into writing. Think... proofs)

Mhhh so this we really need to figure out. I say no wizard war, or if it is, less voldemort and more WW3.

SORORITIES AND FRATS AND THE SCHOOOLS

So this is a college with different degrees.

What does "math magic" constitute

This is on a modern-day earth-like place

It does have dorms, girls and boys separate

YES MAGIC ART

No wizard war. I agree.

YESSS

---

As a high schooler this will be hard. I have like 0 understanding of college.

Also

PLEASE FOR HEAVENS SAKE WHEN WE DO THIS KEEP THE ROMANCE TO A MINIMUM

its just like high school

with a lot more free time

so maybe just do high school

Agreed. If you wanna do more than like stare into each others eye, take it to PMs or whatever.

What I'm envisioning is (In rough terms):

In order to change reality, you need to understand the things than fuel it. You can't just say "Oh I want that thing to float!" you need to go into the gravitational equations that are effecting it, and change the variables. The farther you go from what's normal, the more magic it consumes, and the faster reality attempts to reassert itself.

Small changes can have rippling effects, but mistakes and errors can have disastrous results, or simply fail to work.

So, if you wanted to heal someone with magic, you'd need to know what's ailing them and have the resources and knowledge to fix it, instead of the TTRPG healer's flowchart(TM) of:

Quote

if flesh wound = true, then use mend flesh & bone.

elseif debuff = true, then use clean.

elseif curse = true, then use uncurse.

elseif dead = true, then use revive.

More or less. I haven't really considered how healing magic would work, but I assume it would need a lot of anatomy and chemistry.

Okokokok

New (definitely not refurbished) magic:

Force constructs.

Essentially, you take all the forces acting on an object, nullify them, and copy them to something else.

Thats the easiest, but you still need to understand (and recreate on some level), like, how the original is made up.

However, should you not recreate it perfectly, for instance using a different construction that does not match it, the forces will act differently, and more complex branches of this focus on how to exploit this.

Cool! Did you appreciate the necromancy except not really?

So like if you wanted mind control you'd have to have an actual understanding of psychology and stuff?

Like magic can affect pretty much all things as long as you understand how they work and what you're doing?

And if you do too much it won't work/it'll be harder?
