Shatterer Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 In the Cosmere, every human has a corresponding soul in the Spiritual Realms, composed of pure Investiture. Following the Shattering of Adonalsium, all Investiture was distributed among the 16 Shards. When a person is born in the Cosmere, particularly on a non-Shardic world, I question whose Investiture is used to form their soul. In fact, I doubt that even on planets with a resident Shard, their Investiture is utilized. According to Icy Tongue (Ghostbloods), the storm light can be blanked of identity . So I propose that when a person is born in cosmere investiture without identity is used to form their soul. What are your thoughts on this?" 1
logicless.bt Posted November 10, 2024 Posted November 10, 2024 Speaking narratively, I think that they would have to contain all investitures. Ambition, autonomy, devotion, Odium, even more abstract shard like ruin -- they all sound like parts of a human. It's fitting that people have the potential for any Intent within them. Speaking mechanically, I think we know that scadrial humans are pure ruin and preservation, no other investiture. So humans on non-shard worlds MUST still be assigned to a shard, since scadrians are functionally no different than other humans. That might mean they're just assigned to whatever shard holds the most investiture on their world, or else their personality assigns them to a specific shard. Would be a great question for Brandon! 4

When Adonalsium was Shattered, all investiture in Cosmere was assigned to each of the sixteen Shards. Even though they settled somewhere else, their investiture is everywhere in Cosmere, on every planet. On the planet with no Shardic presence, spirit webs of newborn people would most likely be made out of investiture present in the system - which is investiture of all sixteen Shards, more or less equal. This investiture isn't identityless, as it's still tied to Shards, but those Shards simply aren't aware of this (usually). Spoiler Overlord Jebus Is all Investiture in the cosmere associated with a Shard? Brandon Sanderson Yes, well, okay. So this is a complicated one. *pauses* So, Investiture predates the Shattering of Adonalsium, all Investiture was from Adonalsium, all Investiture got assigned to one of the 16 Shards when Adonalsium was Shattered. Some of the Investiture was not on Yolen but location is irrelevant. So Investiture is related to Shards even on planets where none of the Shards are inhabiting. Overlord Jebus Are they aware of that Investiture? Brandon Sanderson That's part of the whole seeing into the infinite, being beyond even the power of a Shard. So, technically you could make the argument that Harmony could feel the sense of Preservation on every world in the cosmere, right? Because the building blocks of all life and creation are these things. Overlord Jebus So the Shard of Preservation embodies all preservation in the cosmere? Brandon Sanderson Yes but he just can't do that, right? Like, he's not infinite. The Vessels are not, even if their minds are enormously expanded by holding a Shard, they are not infinite. The Connection is all there in the Spiritual Realm. Oathbringer London signing (Nov. 28, 2017) 1
