"I beg your pardon?" September asked nervously, "I'm here because he needs me to be . . ."

-----

"Oh, hullo May, I thought you'd run," October said as she approached. He was still holding August down by the shoulders in hist chair, and August was staring at June across the room.

"They're just fighting it out at the moment, if these people don't give up soon we can run out the back."

"But why?"

~~~
"I was running, but then December told me to run away from January."
"He said that . . . that I . . . well . . . mother didn't want me to come here, but he insisted, he said he wanted another Month to be someone he knew . . ."
He put a hand to his head.
-------
October frowned. "I thought both of them had left as well, what are they doing back here?"
“Why didn’t she want you here?”
”Dunno.”
"So should you, now," she said, finishing up.
June shook his head, "Nah . . . they'll chase me--that's what I get for being stupid again. They don't really know you, and you seem harmless enough, if you just disappear they won't notice." His voice sounded strained.
He sat rigid now, thinking quickly.
"She has never liked my father, it was a political thing and they try to stay out of each other's business . . . " He mumbled in answer to her question, not really paying attention, "Jhosino's last button, he's going to kill me isn't he?"
September ran another hand over his face, breathing quickly.
------
October glanced at the others in the throne-room nervously.
"Come on," He finally grunted, pulling August out of his chair. "Let's go find out what's going on with them, I'm sure it's nothing but--" There was a flicker of worry in his eyes, "Yes, they'll just have news, and after we talk we can all leave to sort this out later."
“September? Are you okay?” She hadn’t been thinking that at all.
"Harmless enough," she snorted.
"I'm not about to let you just die."
that's what he wants her to think 😉
He ignored her question.
". . . it makes sense, he wouldn't want someone capable to take the place of September, so he'd have someone he knows won't be a threat take the place instead, and he has the perfect excuse because I'm his son . . ."
September took several deep breaths trying to calm himself down.
"Yeah but, I'll probably just die anyway." He did his best to give her a grin, but winced after trying to shrug.
whoops
October nodded to her absently, and started leading August down off the dias, his thick hand gripping his arm. They exited through one of the side doors, and entered the dark halls.
"Did you see them doing anything May? Anything out of the ordinary?" He sounded nervous.
He tensed slightly, but didn't mention it.
"And of course I'd be easy to get out of the way in the end, weak and blind . . . I'm so stupid."
“Um… December was tied up.”
”Don’t talk about yourself like that,” she said softly.
October paused, thinking.
"He'll probably use her to get to February somehow," August whispered.
"Well that's obvious enough," October replied harshly, "He couldn't have waited a few days, could he, he's been waiting for an opening like this for forever."
-----
September just shook his head, "For all I preach about logic, it's a disappointment that I didn't see this coming."
"Will you show us where they were May?" October asked, changing his tone to sound cheerful, "That'd be very helpful."
August didn't say anything
----
He leaned back against the seat. "I doubt that, though there's little I can do to change things now. Unless you know how to pick locks or something along those lines."
They rounded a corner in the hallway to find the table and the smashed vase shards all over the ground from before. December and January were no longer there.
”… If we get caught, don’t tell your father I can do this,” she said. It was a joke, but there was a seriousness to it.
She knelt down at the door. Generic and stereotypical as it may have been, she pulled two pins from her hair and went to work.
October frowned, and crouched down to look at the broken pieces.
"There's a little blood on the carpet here," He said gruffly, "It's unlikely she cut herself pushing the vase, she'd have to have grabbed one of the sharp pieces."
August nodded, "It's classic enough, though not something I think January would have fallen for . . ." he turned to May, "Were they talking about anything interesting?"
-----
He paused, "What are you . . .
"Oh, you really can pick locks."
"Well there's our conformation they aren't going to be friendly," October said. He stood and followed a small trial of blood droplets to a door across the hall."
"That room is a dead end," August said quietly, "If they went in there, then they'll likely still be there."
----
He nodded, and folded his hands in his lap, waiting patiently. There wasn't really much he could do to help.
May looked up at October.
April kept going until the lock popped open.
October just shrugged and opened the door, motioning for August and May to enter first.
Inside, January was standing by an open window, clutching the edge and leaning out. He cursed softly before whipping around as he noticed the door open. December was not there.
"Oh . . . October, you scared the crap out of me." He clutched his chest, looking out of breath.
29 minutes ago, Ookla the Inconclusive said:
"Regardless, I'm not about to let them just kill you."
He stared at her for a few seconds, hesitating.
". . . Well, I suppose I'm not really one to turn down a stupid idea, after tonight," He said quietly.
