It made his stomach lurch. Not because he recognized the shape but because . . .

He pulled back his own sleeve, and then unwrapped a cloth he'd tied around his wrist. He was branded too.

It looked old, the scarred skin had healed completely years ago. The brand itself was a diamond shape, styled to look like an eye.

"You can cover it like I do or . . . August was braver then me--he took a knife to it and cut off the branded skin. Now it just looks like he scraped his wrist really badly and got a scar."

He tugged on the short strand of hair by his ear that Arke had cut.

"What I'm trying to say is that it's not the end of the world."
