AffordableInvestiture He/Him Posted August 9, 2024 Posted August 9, 2024 Spoilers for Elantris and The Sunlit Man Nomad, having previously held a dawnshard, is capable of absorbing investiture, and he has no upper limit to how much investiture he can hold IIRC. Does this mean if Nomad went to the Selish subastral he would be able to absorb the Dor, assuming the investiture plasma storm doesn’t kill him first. Could this potentially affect the location dependant investitures of Sel, as well as giving him the juice for many skips and maybe even (far-fetched idea coming up) ascend to hold the combined shards of devotion and dominion? 2

Does this mean if Nomad went to the Selish subastral he would be able to absorb the Dor, assuming the investiture plasma storm doesn’t kill him first. That would kill him very very fast, just like he couldn't consume investiture flowing from the Canticle's sun into its core because it was simply too intense. The Dor in Selish CR is a very dense and deadly plasma - that’s too much for Nomad to handle. TSM ch 1: Quote He had a guess, watching the strength of that light, that he wouldn’t be able to absorb it. No more than a common cord and plug could handle the raw output of a nuclear reactor. This was something incredible, a force that would fry him before he could make use of its power. Uh, Nomad, Aux said in his monotone voice. I get the feeling that trying to absorb and use Investiture from that is going to be like trying to pick out a snowflake from an avalanche. I don’t think we should let it hit you. “It will kill me if it does ” Nomad whispered. Spoiler Questioner Can you describe what Shadesmar looks like on either Nalthis or Sel. Brandon Sanderson Yeah. On Sel? Looks like a big old storm that will destroy you. More than a storm, it's like a big pressurized-- it's like plasma, almost. It is really dangerous. Really dangerous. That 'cause the Dor is hanging out there. Oathbringer release party (Nov. 13, 2017) 2 hours ago, AffordableInvestiture said: Could this potentially affect the location dependant investitures of Sel, Hypothetically - yes, it would affect it in such a way that nobody from that region won't be able to use Selish magic because there is no investiture in that Cognitive region to draw from. AonDor draws from the Dor located near Elantris, which causes it to be location dependent - if someone were to consume all of investiture near Elantris, Aons would just stop working until investiture returns there (it will eventually). Ascending to Devotion/Dominion might fully fix this problem. 2 hours ago, AffordableInvestiture said: and maybe even (far-fetched idea coming up) ascend to hold the combined shards of devotion and dominion? Hypothetically - I think so. However, he will Ascend long before he consumes entirety of the Dor because his body would be unable to hold so much investiture and would just vaporized, Mistborn spoilers: Spoiler Like Vin when touching the power of the Well of Ascension, or when she was consuming Mists. Spoiler Kaimipono Allomancy is fueled by Preservation's body? How exactly does that work? And how does that interact with Atium—it's fueled by both gods' bodies? Brandon Sanderson The powers of Ruin and Preservation are Shards of Adonalsium, pieces of the power of creation itself. Allomancy, Hemalurgy, Feruchemy are manifestations of this power in mortal form, the ability to touch the powers of creation and use them. These metallic powers are how people's physical forms interpret the use of the Shard, though it's not the only possible way they could be interpreted or used. It's what the genetics and Realmatic interactions of Scadrial allow for, and has to do with the Spiritual, the Cognitive, and the Physical Realms. Condensed 'essence' of these godly powers can act as super-fuel for Allomancy, Feruchemy, or really any of the powers. The form of that super fuel is important. In liquid form it's most potent, in gas form it's able to fuel Allomancy as if working as a metal. In physical form it is rigid and does one specific thing. In the case of atium, it allows sight into the future. In the case of concentrated Preservation, it gives one a permanent connection to the mists and the powers of creation. (I.e., it makes them an Allomancer.) So when a person is burning metals, they aren't using Preservation's body as a fuel so to speak—though they are tapping into the powers of creation just slightly. When Vin burns the mists, however, she'd doing just that—using the essence of Preservation, the Shard of Adonalsium itself—to fuel Allomancy. Doing this, however, rips 'troughs' through her body. It's like forcing far too much pressure through a very small, fragile hose. That much power eventually vaporizes the corporeal host, which is acting as the block and forcing the power into a single type of conduit (Allomancy) and frees it to be more expansive. Hero of Ages Q&A - Time Waster's Guide (Oct. 15, 2008) Once this happens I'm not sure if he would be able to consume more of the Dor without his body, or how would that affect his soul. It's possible he won't be able to Ascend to the entirety of the Dor, but just to a tiny fraction of it, because once he Ascends it would change him enough to prevent him from drawing in more of the Dor - or quite the opposite, he would gain more Connection to the rest of the Dor and it would be easier for him to draw it all in. However, Odium created the Dor specifically to prevent anyone from Ascending to Devotion and Dominion, so there might be something else, we don't know about, which would prevent Nomad from Ascending - other than the Dor being a deadly, ultra-dense plasma that would just kill him on the spot. Spoiler [...] Brandon Sanderson [...] So on Sel, we have AonDor. AonDor is based on the fact that the Dor, which is an amalgamation of Dominion and Devotion, has been pressed together and stuffed into the Cognitive Realm by Odium who didn't want it to gain sentience, as Investiture will do if it is left alone. It will either seek someone to be its Vessel or it will gain sentience. He pressed it in there; he pressed it together, which creates the violent reaction, because those two intents are opposed. And that is the foundation of the magic. Because it's stuck in the Cognitive Realm rather than the Spiritual Realm (the Spiritual Realm is location-independent; Cognitive Realm is location-dependent), it makes the magic on Sel only work in close proximity to what is keyed through there to the location they're keyed to. This has to do with Identity and Connection. Mostly Connection. So that means you can't do AonDor on another planet, but you can do other magics works anywhere, because they're drawing the magics specifically through either the place, or they're end-neutral, like Breath is, and you don't need any extra power. Arcanum Unbounded Chicago signing (Dec. 6, 2016) Yeah, these are good points. There was a WoB about nightblood that inspired this post: https://wob.coppermind.net/events/526/#e16359. This next part is completely hypothetical but what if Nomad had both nightblood and his plate? We saw his plate resist the sunlight on canticle for long enough that he managed to fly to the stranded beaconites. Nightblood could just make a temporary pocket for him in the Dor. Not gonna happen, but it would be interesting to see.

Not gonna happen, but it would be interesting to see. Both his plate and Nightblood won't help him. If the goal is Ascension then he needs to touch the Dor and draw it in and the Dor is simply too violent to be touched in the CR - his Shardplate would get overwhelmed, Nightblood would get full immediately and Nomad would be dead before he is able to consume even a fraction of Dor. 1
