Aaron pulls out his axe. “So be it. Jane, don’t interfere please.”

"No-" Jane stepped back, though, hand on her daggers.

Aaron clutched at his wounds, trying to stem the bleeding. “Jane…” he coughed out. “Help.” @Lotus Blossom

Jane rushed to him, taking some of her clothes and wrapping a bandage around his wounds.

"Aaron- Aaron slow your breathing. Look at me. No, look at me. Okay. You're okay."

Jane fussed with his wounds, trying to make sure they weren't getting infected.

"Breathe okay? Close your eyes if you want. Don't talk. Conserve energy. Please."

You’re all good.

He breathed in quick gasps of pain. “Kill me now. Please.”

He looked her dead in the eyes. He was afraid.

"I- I can't. I won't. I."

She shook her head, unzipping her pack and pouring some water on his wounds, cleaning the blood.

She wouldn't look as her hands worked, trying to fix somehow what was happening to him. Stop the blood. Stoop the pain. Stop the death from seeping into him.

There was so. Much. Blood.

No.

Please.

She closed her eyes as she tried best she could to help him.

"Here, take this basil leaf. Just focus on the taste. Not the pain."

What more could she do?

What more would she be expected to do?

And how could she save him?

If she couldn't save herself?

“You…you have to. To save them.” He spat the basil leaf out, that would make him want to live more. Whatever it took, he would make her kill him. No matter how afraid he was.

“Kill me, win the games. You can. Save your water.”

"No- Don't say that-"

She couldn't win the games.

She couldn't pretend like she could.

And she couldn't have someone's last words be asking her to do that for them.

Not again.

Please, just not again.

"Save yourself first. Please. Stay alive. You can."

A tear dripped from his cheeks. He was shaking.

“You have to kill me. Then you have to win.”

“Then what’s the point of helping me live? I’m dead meat now.”

If you go back a couple pages and find the list of people I mentioned, you could choose one and mention them, people are kinda all over but the arena isn't big enough that it's a huge deal.

"Don't say that."

Jane squeezed her eyes shut.

"Just take the water. Drink it. Just do."

Why wouldn't he listen.

All her life she's been shouting to be heard over the noise.

There was so, so much noise.

But no one could ever hear her.

Or listen to her.

Because of that cursed noise.

Too much

noise.

"These games shouldn't matter to you now, Aaron. Just focus on conserving the energy you have left. The life you have left. Isn't that what you want? Isn't that what everyone's supposed to want?"

She fussed over trying to prop him up by a tree.

And don't ask me to win the games, She added in her mind.

I can't keep promises.

And I don't want to fail someone again.

Someone who counts on me.

Who uses the remaining breath left to speak to me.

But never listen.

They never listen.

He drank the water. “So…you’re not going to kill me? Ever?” He seemed sad, but relieved.

He screamed as she moved him, but felt better once she was done.

“If I’m alive…can I help you?”

She stood up.

"But it might be difficult, with your talent."

Jane paused and turned back to him, "Wanna go somewhere else?"

She shrugged and grinned.

Jane sat back down, swinging her pack back off her shoulder.

"That's okay. Sit here then; I'll stay. If anyone comes, I'll be on the lookout."

She offered him a piece of the food rations she had in her pack.

"Take this, you'll need it to recover from those wounds."

Why was helping people so, so, hard?

“I can’t do much else. Thanks for staying. Sorry for being such a dead weight. I guess I’m an alive one, actually,” he said, chuckling. The chuckle turned into a fit of coughing.
