She was…happy because she had Sword? Edgar couldn’t tell. “I don’t know what you’re saying.” He rested his head on hers for a second, then lifted it quickly, blushing. She probably wouldn’t want him to do that.

Jenny shook her head. She held up one finger for the number one. She pointed at herself, then at her smile. She then held up two fingers for the number two. She pointed at Sword, then herself, then at Roy. Jenny gave a thumbs up.

She paused for a half second, then mimed resting her head on Ed’s head, pointed at him, then gave a thumbs up. She liked when he rested his head on hers.

“You are happy…and you are going to stab Roy?” He smiled at her, then put his head back on hers. It felt good, to have his arm around her, his head on top of hers. Her hair was surprisingly warm…was that normal?

Jenny smiled when Ed put his head back on hers and leaned on him a little more. She held up a number one and a thumbs up. She then held up a number two and a thumbs down. She pointed at Sword, pointed at herself, pointed at Roy, then shrugged.

“You’re happy…and…” he laughed. “It’s ok, you can tell me later. He smiled again, and this time it didn’t go away.

Ed was smiling, so it was fine that he didn’t understand her attempt to tell him that she could protect herself from Roy. Jenny grinned and tried to wrap an arm around Ed too, but rapidly aborted the action with a gasp of pain. Stretching her arm out that far was a bad idea. She kept smiling a genuine smile, though. Jenny was now leaning on Ed heavily. She was tired, but something in her still didn’t trust Roy. She didn’t want to close her eyes around him.

Edgar jerked his head up, looking at Jenny. She had moved, it had hurt her. “Don’t move, please, it’ll hurt you.” But, seeing what she has tried to do, he pulled her a little closer to him, careful not to move her in a way that would hurt her.

Jenny nodded. Ed had done exactly what she’d been attempting to do. He knew her well. An idea then occurred to her she felt stupid for not having earlier. She mimed writing on a piece of paper with her hands and looked at Ed questioningly.

He reached into his bag, but didn’t find any paper. Instead, Gift flowed to Jenny’s hand, becoming a sheet of metal that would inscribe what she wished.

Hello again.

Hello again.

Jenny smiled excitedly.

Hi Gift!

Her greeting was directed at Gift, not for the tablet.

Please write “Thank you so much for saving me earlier. I’m sorry I wasn’t paying attention and got hurt, and I’m sorry that’s making you hurt too. Also, I think you look really handsome right now.”

It did as she asked. Edgar smiled as he read. “It’s not your fault you got hurt, it’s Roy’s. And I’m glad you think that.”

Jenny nodded and continued to mentally transcribe her words.

Mostly his, yeah. I still feel bad about it, although I know that doesn’t make total sense.

She looked Ed over as best as she could while still leaning against him.

Did the vines hurt you at all? Oh, wait, shoot, gah, Aaron.

Jenny glanced around, locating the kid on the ground.

He collapsed. He might need help.

“I understand, gods know I’ve been hurt enough to know how you feel. Oh! Gorgon’s blood! Do you need some? And Aaron will be fine, he just overextended himself.”

Jenny shook her head emphatically.

I don’t want to waste it. If one of us gets very seriously injured, they might die without it. I’m not going to die right now. If we need to fight I’ll drink some so I can help. I can eat ambrosia instead for now, we have more of that. It’ll take a few days, but I’ll be fine eventually.

She smiled a bit mischievously.

I selfishly like having an excuse to lean on you a lot, anyways.

Jenny shook her head.

You’ve already injured yourself like this trying to protect me before. It’s my turn for that now. That’s very sweet of you, though.

She really wanted to kiss Ed, but shifting from her current position would be painful.

“It shouldn’t be either of our turns. I said I’d protect you. I…I failed.”

It shouldn’t be either of our turns, you’re right. But this wasn’t your responsibility. It was physically impossible for you to protect me. We can’t stop every bad thing, Ed. We are going to get hurt, and sometimes there just isn’t anything you can do to stop it. We’re trying to help, though. That’s what matters.

Jenny turned her head and gave Ed a kiss on the cheek. Fortunately that wasn’t painful to do.

He blushed, grinning widely. “I wish I could protect you. I’m not going to stop trying though. No matter how many times I can’t, I will always be trying.”

So will I. I will always try.

Jenny tried to shift a bit so she could kiss Ed, but that attempt hurt too much to be successful. Gosh darn that stupid hole in her side. Normally she would’ve tried to power through the pain, but this was an internal injury. She didn’t want to cause potentially seriously harmful damage.

Edgar thought she might be trying to kiss him? Maybe? Or maybe that’s just what he wanted her to do. Either way, he turned so that he was looking her in the eyes. He leaned in and gave her a quick kiss.

Jenny grinned widely. Apparently it was obvious what she had been trying to do. She was glad Ed was able to read body language better than she could.

3 - 3, we’re even now. And thanks.

“Umm…you’re welcome. And I guess we are even.” He smiled at her. He really liked being around Jenny. Not only was she his girlfriend, which he still couldn’t believe, she was a good friend and an amazing person.

Jenny just stared at Ed’s face, smiling softly. He looked wonderful. Everything about him was wonderful. He was kind, smart, courageous. Perfect was the wrong word. He had his flaws and weaknesses, just like everyone else. He felt… right. Yeah, that was the word. Right.

“How’s your side feeling?” he asked, moving back and resting his head on hers again, arm around her waist.

It hurts.

Jenny peeked at her bandages. There was a little bit of red on them, but they weren’t soaked with blood. That was probably a good sign. She was tempted to poke them to see how painful that would be, but managed to hold herself back.

Everything kind of aches, actually. I think it’s the lightning.

Roy’s spear was a very effective weapon.
