She also blushed slightly but didn't let go of his hand. "Is this ok?" She whispered.

"Yeah, I think so" His blush stays on a constant stream, and with a smile too. Also whispering

He smiles a bit more, but keeps it mild

He looked up at her slowly, then took her hand, standing and not letting go. “Oh, thanks.”

Jenny followed the others out, supporting Ed as well as she could. Hopefully he could manage to walk without making his poor state too noticeable; it could come off as suspicious. Noticing Lucid and Ashton holding hands, she whispered to him.

”They’re somehow moving even faster than we did.”

“Yeah…suspicious. Really suspicious.” He stumbled along, and  was barely able to walk.

Ed wasn’t wrong. Lucid and Ashton had met only about half an hour ago. Looking back, Jenny realized that she had been very lucky that Ed was so amazing. She’d fallen for him hard and fast. It would’ve been easy for him to hurt her.

He did hurt you, Jenny. Do you really know this boy? You claim you love Edgar, but you’ve only known him for a week.

Jenny ignored the voice as well as she could, shifting so that she supported more of Ed’s weight as they walked.

”We should keep an eye on them.”

“Yeah. She doesn’t seem like a typical siren, but it might be something like that. I’m worried.”
He smiled thankfully as she supported him.

Ed was saying he was worried but also smiling, which was a bit confusing. Jenny hadn’t considered that Ashton could be a siren. Ashton would hate her in particular if that was the case.

You can’t ignore this forever.

Jenny glanced down, and noticed something odd.

”Huh. I wonder why the grass is dead.”

It’s not dead, nor does it look dead.

“It’s all browned and crunchy, though. Is it a really weird type of grass?”

Jenny reached down and plucked a blade of grass. To her, it seemed unchanged. To others, it appeared to instantly wither, looking like it had been long dead. She spun it around in her fingers for a moment, then flicked it away.

”They probably just need to water it more.”

“Umm…well…” he looked down at his hand in hers, which wasn’t withering and dying, thankfully. He couldn’t seem to form words.

“Are you ok? Is the pain getting worse?”

Ed had trouble talking when he was hurting. She’d need to make sure that Jace healed him again tomorrow. Jenny squeezed his hand gently in an attempt to comfort him.

“Yeah, I am. It’s just that…the grass didn’t die until…never mind, it’s not important.”

 He squeezed her hand back.

Jenny thought for a moment, trying to figure out what Ed meant. Then, her eyes widened and she quickly pulled her hand out of his, backing away a few steps. Was she why he had been feeling so bad? Why he’d almost died?

He immediately collapsed to the floor and groaned in pain. He struggled to a sitting position.

Jenny had forgotten that she’d been supporting him.

”Sorry!”

She rifled through her bag and pulled out a pair of fluffy gloves. She’d brought them in case her hands got cold while they were camping at night. Jenny put them on, then went back to Ed and tried to help him back up. Fortunately, she was wearing long sleeves and pants, so her only exposed skin was her face.

“It’s ok,” he grunted. “What are the gloves for?”

 She was so confusing sometimes.

“If I killed something by touching it, then, well…”

Jenny didn’t finish her sentence, terrified of the implication. Was just being near her enough to hurt something? When they arrived, she’d need to make sure to give everyone else a wide berth.

“You weren’t killing me when you were holding my hand. And I like your hand more than a glove.” He smiled at her, trying to be comforting.

“You almost died a few hours ago, and you’ve been feeling awful ever since.”

Jenny pulled her gloves on a little tighter.

“I can’t risk you.”

”Please don’t do that. For now, at least.”

She looked downcast saying that. Would that be their last kiss?

“…sorry.” He looked down too. He’d just been trying to help, but he’d made things worse. Again.
