Edgar can’t speak right now, his wounds prevent him from more than a few words. So I speak for him, as well as I can. He likes you Jenny, he truly does. He’s not very good with people, he can be bad at showing how he feels, but he does. I wish he could be here instead of me, he’d be better at this.

Jenny looked up, surprised. Not-Edgar was still speaking to her. It was saying that Edgar really did like her. The figure raised its voice.

LIES. This other cannot be trusted.

She didn’t know who to believe. The bizarreness of her situation struck her. Her she was, trying to decide which of the two arguing voices in her head she should listen to. Jenny was insane, wasn’t she?

Well, she was past the point of no return now. She still had to make a decision. Jenny needed to pick who she would align her thoughts with. So she decided to trust the one who had been kind to her.

”Thank you for telling me, Gift.”

The voice scoffed.

Fool. You won’t be able to ignore me forever.

The figure abruptly left, sending a jarring sensation through Jenny. She was left sitting in the darkness. She knew that the voice would return eventually, but for now she was left alone.

Not alone, Jenny. I’m here, and Edgar is here for you too, though he can’t speak to you.

Jenny nodded. She wasn’t alone. She’d been alone for so long that it was still hard to believe.

”Are you Gift?”

She was incredibly curious as to who was speaking to her. Plus, she wanted to call the Not-Edgar voice by the correct name. Jenny certainly couldn’t be rude to it after what it had done for her.

I am. Thought I am not Edgar, so that name is fitting at well, if you wish.

“Alrighty.”

Jenny sat in silence for a while. She wasn’t a fan of sitting still, however, so she decided to do something about it. She needed to practice manipulating dreams, anyways.

Jenny closed her eyes for a moment. She imagined Sword. Beautiful bronze, perfectly balanced, cool to the touch. After a while, she felt a familiar weight in her hand. She opened her eyes and found herself holding her favorite dagger. Smiling, Jenny started flipping it.

”Why don’t you talk to Edgar?”

She realized that might be too forward of a question and continued on, speaking quickly.

”You, um, don’t have to answer that if you don’t want to.”

I do not speak to him for several reasons. He has never spoken to me, so there is no need for me to speak to him. There has also never been a time of great need where speaking to him would be helpful. But chiefly, there are the orders I am following…

"are you talking to yourself now?"

Jenny just couldn’t contain her curiosity.

”Are you allowed to tell me what your orders are?”

She hoped that she wouldn’t drive Gift away, but this was too fascinating.

I can. The one who built me is not supposed to have favorites. He built me as a…crutch for Edgar, but I am not allowed to speak of this, or to speak to him at all unless it is an incredible emergency.

“Huh. I probably shouldn’t tell Edgar all of this, then.”

It was nice of Hephaestus to give his son Gift. Gift was pretty great. Certainly cooler than a glowing rock, although Jenny still did like her glowing rock.

”I’m sorry you don’t get to talk to people very often.”

That would probably be best, he didn’t need to think worse of himself. And don’t be sorry for me, I don’t need to talk.

Jenny didn’t need to talk either, but she still got lonely when she didn’t. Maybe being around people and reading their thoughts kept Gift from getting lonely. She hoped that it did.

“Do you know what I could say to make Edgar like himself more? He normally doesn’t listen to me about it, and it makes me worried.”

I’m not sure. I was built for a…specific purpose that does not include helping him feel better about himself. In fact, my purpose is part of the reason he doesn’t like himself.

Aaron Earlier...

Aaron wiped the sweat of his face, sulphurous powder wiping off with the sweat, clinging to it. He looks around at the battlefield, and sees a bunch of mortals pointing to him, and the others. Time to go he thinks to himself. He runs towards the others, feeling the gaze of the mortals and the cameras at his back.

Aaron Present

Aaron comes back into the camp that the others have set up. Hope Edgar will be ok. He thinks to himself. "I need him for later" he mutters. While he had been out, he had achieved what he had wanted to, to get a newspaper. He throws it in front of the others. Look what happened. He says in disgust, we are now all over the mortal news, and we still have a week to go to the solstice.

Do people like the newspaper? The dates are accurate for this years solstice as well.

The newspaper is freaking amazing!!!

Jenny woke up to Aaron throwing down a newspaper, rather upset. She blinked the sunlight out of her eyes. Skimming through the newspaper, she found that he had a very good reason to be upset. They were in deep trouble. Now regular humans would be chasing them in addition to monsters.

”Did they really have to use that picture of me?”

Edgar was still fast asleep, though he seemed to be shaking. He arched his back in pain, a soundless scream escaping his lips. Tears were falling from his eyes, wetting the bag.

Gift still hung on Jenny’s arm.

Not even sleep could keep Edgar from his pain at this point. He was doing very, very badly. Worse than she had expected. Jenny thought at Gift.

Has it been long enough to give Edgar more ambrosia?

”I suppose that’s true.”

Jenny would need to be very careful to keep her hair in a bun.

No. That would probably kill him. He’ll live, as he is right now.

Aaron

Aaron glances at Edgar again, hearing him whimper in pain, from what had happened. How does he get hurt so easily and quickly he thinks to himself.

He walks over to him, summoning the grass and other plants to form a bed for Edgar to be elevated off the ground. He picks a few flowers out of his pockets. "Marigold, Evening Primrose, Lavender, Chamomile, and Passionflower." he mutters to himself picking them out for their properties, and scatters a few of each onto the ground.

He pours his energy into the plants, causing them to grow up the temporary bed frame, and near Edgar's head, each plant designed to give immense blooms and scents. As they finish, Aaron starts to feel odd. What a time to faint for the first time he thinks to himself. Preceding to fall against one of the plant frames.
