Ravenclawjedi42 Posted January 9, 2024 Posted January 9, 2024 As a Truthwatcher and somebody interested in linguistics, as I was recently reading through the threads in which Glyph phonemes and the Women’s Script were decoded, I decided I wanted to try decoding the name of my Knight Radiant order in Alethi based on it’s glyph because it seemed like a fun thing to do. This is almost certainly wrong, but I wanted to see how likely others thought my transliteration was. Glyph with my guess at glyph phonemes, second image is glyph with phonemes written over part of it: Spoiler Which is in turn primarily based on the Calligraphic phonemes and to a lesser extent (for the F and the B the standard and hybrid sets. Spoiler Calligraphic: Standard: Hybrid: This would put the name of the order in Alethi at one of several things. The options that I found were: Nufbo (half of the glyph is read from right to left, which would make sense due to the fact that the glyphs in the key are facing the direction of the phonemes on the right half of the glyph) Nufbobfun (entire glyph read from right to left) Obfun (half of the glyph is read from left to right, this one sounds the most Alethi to me, this one and “Obfunufbo” have added credibility, I think, because the Women’s Script is read from left to right. Obfunufbo (entire glyph is read from left to right) Nufob (Nufbo but with the f and o reversed) Nufobofun (Nufbobfun but with the f and the o reversed) Bofun (Obfun but with the f and the o reversed) Bofunufob (Obfunufbo but with the f and the o reversed) Anyway, what do you all think? Which one of these seem the most likely? Do any of them seem likely? 1

Keep in Mind the WoI: Spoiler Quote Argent 17th Shard user Treamayne made an interesting observation re: Surge glyphs - Can you comment? Isaac Stewart No comment yet on this specifically, tho I'll respond to something in that thread regarding names and "screw yous" within glyphs. Isaac Stewart Readers are trying to pronounce glyphs by reading them. Glyphs aren't read. They're memorized. Sounds might be found in glyphs. Isaac Stewart Glyphs have evolved from the early days. Just like the Chinese character for "tree" doesn't look like a tree anymore. Isaac Stewart Alethi glyphs are recognized by overall shape, not by the shapes/sounds that might be found within. Isaac Stewart For example, the Bridge 4 glyph is still recognizable even if the component shapes are changed. Isaac Stewart Hope this helps! Argent So let's see if I got it. The "kholin" glyphpair could, given enough time, no longer look like "khokh" & "linil"... Argent ... but still be recognizable as "kholin" due to its overall shape? Isaac Stewart That is correct. More ancient glyphs will have slowly morphed away from the original sounds found inside. General Twitter 2016 (Jan. 1, 2016) Also, please see the Oathbringer Glyph Pages Page one shows us Zatalef, which is a glyph in its infancy and therefore the phonemes are "discoverable" inside the glyph; because it hasn't had time to morph yet. Also, the Radiant glyphs, specifically, probably predate the Alethi Glyph system (but may have influenced it's formation). For pronunciation, start in the middle and move right - the left side would be the mirror image. I don't know if this thread is the one you already mentioned having read, but I'm linking it here in case you (or anybody reading this) want's to check out the old discussion (page 9 of the thread was linked in the WoI). 1

I had previously seen that WoI, but I thought that the pronunciation might be discernible, and I found possible phonemes fairly easily (even though some of them are almost certainly wrong). 1
