Aubrey blushes upon seeing the newcomer enter the ball. His muscular build, his bright hair, his disheveled clothing, how depressed he was…he just seemed so attractive.

But she couldn’t just tell him that. Definitely not. That would be taboo. But she still approached his table and dropped her necklace—golden, with a diamond on the end—under it. “Excuse me, sir,” she said. “I am looking for a necklace that I accidentally dropped. I think it rolled under your table, but I cannot bend over with how big this dress is,” Aubrey gestured to the large poofy thing covering her legs, “could you please pick it up for me?”

Lord Owen Alford checked under the table, brushing the red curls off his forehead. Really. Women need different fashion. Just... wear trousers. It's so much easier. He immediately saw the necklace. He grabbed it, and came up from under the table. "Here you are, m'lady." He says, handing it to her. He looks up at her face and freezes. This lady was... well, beautiful. "Uh..." Say something say something... "Hi." NOT THAT!

“Hello,” Aubrey says. “I am Aubrey Wyndham, and my mother is Princess Clara II of Lüneburg. You are?”

"I am Owen- I mean, Lord Alford. I'm Scottish. I mean... part Scottish. I mean..." Owen says. "I am Lord Alford." He nods curtly. You REALLY need to get better. At everything.

“Scotland! I went up there once, with my father when my mother was away, visiting her family back in Hapsburg. She would never have let me, she would think that it was ‘too much excitement for a young girl!’ But it wasn’t, wasn’t at all. No, I had a wonderful trip there. It is just a wonderful country, so wonderful. Very cold.”

"Yes, yes!" Owen said. "It is quite the wonderful place! I posit that you are from here, in London?" He tried desperately to use a proper British accent, but... well, the Scottish always came through.

“Barnet, actually, on the outskirts of this city, in Middlesex.”

"Interesting. Well, nice to meet you..." Oh no. What is her name... "This... fine evening!"

“Very nice to meet you too, sir. Is your family royalty?” Please say yes. Mother will never let me marry somebody without royal blood. Even though she married Father, who was just a random middle-class guy.

A figure slipped into the ballroom alone. His clothing was of typical cut and style, but was oddly all black. The most striking feature was a mask that covered the bottom half of his face, which, contrastingly, was completely white.

"Uh..." No. I'm not. But... she wants it, doesn't she? "Yes, I am part of a... very real life royal bloodline." LYING?! Stupid, stupid, stupid!

There was a middle class back then. It was back in the early 1770s, in days long ago.

“That’s very nice sir. Let me guess: A descendant of one of the old kings of Scotland before the Acts of Union?”

Maybe? Hopefully... I think I'm just part of a Noble house... "Yes, that." Owen says. He blushes. "Do you want to... dance?"

He’s asking me to dance! He’s actually…he’s actually doing this!

“Very much so, sir.” Aubrey took his hands in hers. “Shall we?”

She said yes! She's actually... she's actually doing this!

"Of course!" Owen said, holding her hands gently.

Aubrey started to move her feet in the patterns of a minuet.

Owen followed, a little jerky and uncomposed. It was obvious he didn't know how to dance very well. "Sorry." he said, blushing deeply.

I'm waiting for someone to react to my unusual character appearing.

What’s the point, you’re never going to dance, Seth thought.

He moved away from the dance floor, downing his wine, and someone caught his eye. Why was that strange man wearing all black? And that mask, such unusual fashion. He moved towards the man, as always his curiosity getting the better of him.

The man caught his eye for a brief moment. His own were a striking amber.

“That’s okay,” Aubrey said, smiling. She was very skilled at dancing, having taught herself in her spare time when Mother wasn’t paying attention and she didn’t feel like studying—which was a lot of the time.

Owen blushed even deeper. She's actually good at this. She's royalty, she can dance, she's formal and not awkward, and GOODNESS she is gorgeous. Maybe I should just... leave? She's too good for me... "I'm sorry..." He says again.

"What do you think of the news?"

“It’s scary, but there’s nothing we can do about it. Only thing to do now is live our lives to the fullest. And who are you?”
