Brandon is constantly RAFOing people when they inquire about an atium/lerasium alloy (for those not in the know, lerasium is the metal Elend ate). What do you think its Allomantic ability is? And, what about its Feruchemical and Hemalurgic effects?

My understanding is that there are 8 base metals, giving various abilities; and their alloys, giving a generally opposite ability. These 16 metals can each be alloyed with Atium for some temporal effect much like with pure Atium. Each of these 33 metals has their own type of Misting. Lerasium permanently adds to the Preservation of an ingester (beyond one threshold making one a Misting[type determined by genetics] and beyond another a Mistborn); It can be alloyed with any of the other 33 metals to focus the Preservation added exclusively to a given metal, creating a misting of that alloyed metal (a full tablet of Preservation that focused would yield a ludicrous level of power; at least savant level, without the drawbacks and with the ability to become a savant on top of that[the availability of enhancement metals must be remembered as well:P] for that metal{ie. when given a set quantity of Larasium becoming Mistbon may not be the be all and end all}). This totals 67 metals and a very fun magic system.

Ostensibly, but it may not be that simple. On the Table of Allomantic Metals, it says alloys of lerasium give expanded "physical and enhancement effects". That's separate from actually creating Mistings.

I sure would love to know how post-Hero of Ages scholars suspected that lerasium gave those expanded abilities, since I'd think there wouldn't be any lerasium to start alloying.

There was one tablet left after Vin gave one to Elend, actually. How much you wanna bet that's gonna figure in to a possible third trilogy?  :)

I wish I could find the source, but I do remember reading that alloying Lerasium with a basic Allomantic metal can yield a misting: for example, Lerasium and pewter can yield a Pewterarm. So one might think at first glance that such an alloy would yield a Seer.

However, Atium is most decidedly not your average, run-of-the-mill metal, to say the least, and beyond that, the fact that Brandon RAFOed it means the answer isn't that simple. No theories from my side yet, but this is one to think about.

Figuring in Atium becomes even more complicated when you introduce the fact that an Atium misting simply shouldn't exist.  How would the power of Preservation allow access only to a metal that doesn't actually draw on Preservation's power at all?  This is easily explained when it comes to a Mistborn using it, but becomes a legitimate conundrum when trying to think of Atium mistings by themselves.  This means that the relationship between Atium and Allomancy isn't quite what we think it is and makes it difficult to come to any sure conclusions with it.

They shouldn't exist, but Preservation tampered with the Allomantic Table there for a while.

And then there's the fact that you're basically mixing Preservation and Ruin in tangible form. I can't imagine them canceling each other out - especially since we got a RAFO on it, and why RAFO something that anticlimactic? - but I would imagine that a duality like that would have some very interesting results.

I like the idea that Atium+Lerasium=Feruchemist. I like it mostly because Sazed said (well, wrote) that Feruchemy is "of the balance" between Ruin and Preservation.

I seem to recall somewhere that when Sazed became a god he created another metal...

possibly an alloy between lerasium and atium?

I think it just wouldn't do anything.

There are plenty of alloys that aren't Allomantic, and would just make a Mistborn sick if they tried to burn them.

Would you happen to remember where you read that? I'd like to see for myself.

Then why would Brandon RAFO it?

Because he's evil?

He doesn't seem like the type to RAFO something just to torment us. If he doesn't tell us something, it tends to be for a reason.

Sorry, I can't remeber where it was. i think it was a forum I was reading, it was likely hearsay from another person though so I wouldn't trust the source.  I was really hoping someone else would have more information, but eh.

That's Robert Jordan's job. (Or was, anyway)

As for reason he RAFO'd it, he might just not have decided yet whether or not he wants to go that direction. I get the feeling he likes to keep his options open.

Sazed does mention new metals, but that's because he restored the metals that Atium displaced.

That's what I was thinking had happened. I don't really see the point of creating new metals above and beyond the 16; it throws off the balance of the system.

From the way everyone is talking, it seems that Preservation actually changed the structure of Allomancy.  I'm about 99.999999% positive that this is not the case.  He didn't change Allomancy itself, he simply used the mists to emphasize the presence of of Atium Mistings in Elend's army.  When we say that he "replaced" a metal with Atium, it means that he messed with their perception of it in order to maintain his sixteen rule.

Sorry, I know most of you guys get this, but I feel it should be stated.

Maybe he wants to use this uncertainty as to its purpose as a source of conflict and suspense in a future book.  And then, just when the hero needs enormous power the most...POW...nothing...

I just listened to the interview (which is awesome, btw), and found Brandon's comments about there being more than just 16 alloys for Atium and Lerasium to be VERY intriguing.  So what are your thoughts?

I think that you have Atium, Atium alloyed with Lerasium, Atium alloyed with each of the sixteen metals, then Atium alloyed with Lerasium alloyed with the sixteen metals (and that's just the Atium side of things!).
