“Please don’t.”

She hugged him tighter, saying nothing.

There was a faint wave of warmth, and some flowers sprouted around the grave.

"I have no use for it anymore." Clay tosses a small pouch full of them to Par.

"That's an interesting rash, Veer. I might have some balm for it. He pulls a pouch out of a pocket on his shirt.

"I'm Clay, by the way."

“Nice to meet you. What do you mean by a rash.” Veer examines his skin. “Oh no. That’s spellsteel. This is bad.”

Par takes it and pockets it. “I have MONEY now. They can’t take no more of my fingers!”

“You’re from the Kingdom, then? The Lawless is much better, if you can avoid the exiled criminals. I’ll give you a schedule for my village.”

“I’m from the exotic land of L. A.! Charlie was kind of mad when my horse broke down.”

“L. A. … sounds a bit like the Kingdom to me, but I suppose it’s over the Edge. Do you have dragons, too?”

“Apparently the dragons here are not very magic, otherwise they would have left to make a new world. I ate dinner with one yesterday.”

Veers entire concept of the conversation suddenly shifts. “Wait… are there dragons where you are from, or did these people do something to you?”

Alright, I’m going to sleep now.

I gotta go to sleep soon.

“Ok… were they real dragons, or were they painkiller hallucination dragons? These sound like unpleasant people, I should go teach them a lesson. Is L.A. across the Edge from here?”

Now I’m actually going to sleep.

"My homeland has ancient tales of dragons. They didn't last very long, but the colors were supposed to be spectacular."

“What happens now to what’s left of him?”

Lerac approached. His warm aura could be felt, along with the cold one associated with Death. They did not cancel each other out, but instead made a disorienting contrast. "His soul, or whatever it is that remains of him, will persist for some time. They generally degrade with time, like all information."

"How would one claim that, exactly?"

"It may be born into a person, or brought on them by circumstance, or chosen. Each case is unique and follows its own rules."

"He killed a lot of people, and he would have killed more if let go. I think he should be punished in some way for that."

"What difference does that make?"
