Rue took a deep, shuddering breath. “You and your kind have taken everything from me. I didn’t…I…my family were the Tuatha’an. The ‘Tinkers’.” She took another breath, and suddenly a sharp, ragged pain filled her. “One of you destroyed them. Destroyed them all, and of course none of us fought back because believed there was a better way. But I know better, now. I survived and I went to the Tower, and then, suddenly, everyone decided you were safe. Sane. An ally.” She scoffed. “But I still know better. I’ll wait as long as I have to, because I know that you will never change. And when everyone else is taken by surprise, I will be there to protect them.”

Nameless nodded slowly, gratitude and sympathy replacing his earlier pained emotions. "Thank you for telling me." He opened a gateway back to the clinic and went to walk through it, but hesitated just before stepping through. "Rue, I'm sorry one of us did that to you. I really am." With that, Nameless walked through the gateway and let it snap shut behind him, leaving Rue alone in the forest.

Rue spat as the gateway disappeared. She felt a tear drip down her cheek and brushed it away furiously. Weak…too weak…your enemy will always be stronger than you are…she let out a scream of rage and let a huge wave of Air fly outward from her, destroying trees and underbrush. She stood there breathing for a long moment, then made her own gateway back to the clinic.

TAAron was standing there, waiting for her, his hand still gripping the strongly glowing sphere.

“What do you want?” She snapped.

"I'm sorry," he said quietly. He looked... ashamed.

Rue snorted. “You can all stop pretending,” she muttered, pushing past him and out the door.

Rue froze, torn between terror and hope and shame. “I…” She pulled away. “If given the chance,” she said softly, “I won’t kill you.” Then she turned and walked away down the hall, towards her room.

TAAron watched her go, then sat down, trying to clear his mind. After a moment, he began humming a tune, clear and low and haunting. He didn't remember where he'd learned it.

He also didn't realize that his connection to Rue was still intact, and that she heard every note.

Rue shut the door to her room, locked it, then sat down on a beanbag chair in the corner. (Every room in the Clinic had one). Her expression never changed from the harsh scowl, but a tear fell down her cheek, then another, then a whole flood of them. Weak, her mind still whispered. Weak. Useless. Redundant. Naive. She closed her eyes, listening to TAAron’s song.

It changed into a song, in a language Rue didn't recognize. It was melancholy, but tinged with hope. TAAron's voice was soft and melodic.

Rue let herself cry for another minute, then stood up. She would not be weak. She would not give in. She wiped her tears. Perhaps…perhaps it was time to meet the newcomers.

The singing stopped. "Uh, Rue?" TAAron's voice in her mind.

Rue blinked; she hadn’t realized he was the one singing. “What?” She snapped, then a little softer. “What?”

“Yup. Didn’t realize it was you until just now, though.”

"Oh. It... uh... wasn't addressed to you."

He accidentally sang her a love song. Foreshadowing? You bet.

He also doesn't realize it was in a different language.

“Good to know,” Rue said flatly. “Why are we still able to talk like this?”

As far as I know, she’s still in the medical wing, but she can go wherever she wants.

Rue snorted, temper flaring back up. “I don’t want your stupid sympathy.”

"I'm not trying to pity you, I'm being empathetic. Would you rather I be angry at you?"
