The scene became a familiar one. A cliff overlooking a forest, near the Tower of Ghenjei. TAAron's younger self sat on a stone across from Lerac. This was back when he was dying. It was also back when Lerac had a habit of messing with people. TAAron listened in to the conversation as his former self spoke.

"Why won't you tell me?"

Dodging the question, Lerac asked his own. "How do you feel about Haly?" Looking back on this memory, TAAron could see his sly smile.

Haly grinned, blushing a little. “What were you asking him?”

TAAron smiled, some of his tension easing away. "I don't remember, exactly. I think maybe he was taking to you or someone else about something, and he wouldn't tell me what it was."

"What!?" his younger self exclaimed, looking taken aback.

Lerac raised his eyebrows, putting on a knowing smile. "You seem to care about her a lot."

TAAron from the memory turned slightly red. "I don't know what you're talking about," he mumbled.

“You’re adorable,” she told him, grinning hugely. This was her favorite dream by far.

TAAron laughed, going slightly red himself from a strange combination of firsthand and secondhand embarrassment. "I was so awkward!"

The healer chuckled. "Oh, come on. You don't do a very good job at hiding it."

"Oh... I... Do you think she knows?" The scholar's expression was one of concern, apprehension, and embarrassment.

“So was I.” She cringed, then smiled again. “It makes me want to hug you.”

She did. (The actual one, not memory)

Insa nodded. "I understand. Crazy, scary stuff happens here."
"Before you come here your life is probably crazy too. You don't quite realize how crazy everything in life can be though."
She smiled. "But here..."
"Anything's possible. And you tend to find that out really quickly."
She turned to look Aventine in the eyes. "All the people here are some of the strongest people I've ever met. Even and perhaps especially the ones I've just recently met."

"Anyways I think I can understand how you might be feeling right now."

TAAron grinned and leaned into the embrace. For a dream, it felt real enough.

Lerac went on. "Maybe, maybe not. But I think you should tell her."

TAAron's eyes widened. "No! No, I couldn't. That would ruin everything. I don't deserve..." He trailed off, hearing a voice getting nearer.

“Marshmallows at the camp,” the younger version of Haly said as she approached along with a rabbit. She flung out her arms. “This is camp,” she announced. “That’s TAAron, Nameless, and Lerac. Everyone, meet Shark!”

The younger TAAron looked down and away, turning even redder.

The memory faded.

Halt’s next memory deposited them on the deck of a ship sailing on metallic seas again. An old grizzled man was at the helm, and Mitis— with her haircut again and looking several years older, dressed exactly like a pirate— chatted with him.  Haly was at the railing, watching the horizon with thorough contentedness.

She smiled a little. "That seems to be the one constant. There, at least I knew what craziness to expect. Here, it's just... there's no rhyme or reason. But in some ways, that makes it better."

"It's not just the events that are chaotic. It's also the reaction. How it affects you and those around you. That is infinitely better here than it was before."

“Yeah.”

Mitis stepped down to where Haly was and leaned next to her. “What’s on your mind?”

“You’re sure it’ll work?”

“Getting you back? Yeah, pretty darn.”

"Oh, so this was pretty recently?" TAAron looked out on the strange seas. "This is quite the place. Did you like it here, by then?"

Lerac opened his eyes again, passively observing the conversation between the two women. He rubbed the new scar on his neck.

“Yeah. I did.” She smiled. “It was pretty, and at night, all the metal would harden. Two of the crew members who dated would go out dancing on it.”

Mitis spoke again. “Are you sure you want to go back? You’re a great crew mate, you know.”

” I’m sure.”

Her eyes closed, and she drifted into a delicate sleep.

~~~
She stood, propping her wrists on the balcony. The ashfall was light tonight, near nonexistent. The chamber played softly, distantly. She payed it no heed.
An arm wrapped around her waist, and she leaned into the man it belonged to. She didn't need to look at his face to know who he was. Only one treated her like this.
"They're beautiful tonight," Alston said. His neck was craned up to the sky. As a Tineye, he was able to see things he called stars. He said they were small glowing points in the sky that lit up the night. "I wish you could see them."
"All I need is to hear you talk about them. That feels like enough."
"It shouldn't be. You can't hear beauty, believe me, I've tried."
"The chamber would disagree," Aventine smiled.
"The chamber is biased," Alston joked. "Real beauty is felt. Not heard."
"But you've never felt stars."
"Not physically, no. But somewhere inside, they make me feel something. I don't know what it is, but I do feel it."
"Perhaps you should go into poetry," she smirked.
He shook his head and smiled. "You know I couldn't. Well, maybe in my free time..."
She chuckled and pressed her head into his chest. His arm tightened around her.
"I wish this moment could last forever," she'd whispered.
"Maybe it will. In a memory, or something similar. Because as long as we are here to remember it, it exists within us."
He hesitated. "Maybe I should write poetry."
She laughed and closed her eyes. "I love you."
"I love you too, my dearest."
~~~

Aventine smiled as she slept.

Pff. Anyway, time for some fun!

TAAron stood over his own dead body. It lay in the dirt, chest cut open and blood spilled from the attempt to remove the shard of Stacis that carried Malum's influence. Haly, Lerac, and the others were around it, in various states of distress.
