Dalinarium

While reading Dawnshard I remembered something...Dalinar's odd dreams about warm golden light that is very similar to what Rysn experienced.

Is there any connections? Maybe Dalinar is connected to another Dawnshard?

Brandon Sanderson

I will RAFO this, but it's a worthy line of conjecture.

Has Nohadon been a Dawnshard in the past? (my guess is maybe he has and now it’s stored inside The Way of Kings, or jumped to Dalinar from there, would explain the Nohadon dream and the warmth he feels and Unite Them)

Bonus second question: is the ardent Pai actually the Herald Paliah? Other than the name similarity, the other ardent remarks on the name being weird, she’s obsessed with showing the world “The Truth” about Aesudan, and the Taravangian interlude in that same block swears by Pali’s mind, which seems a bit suspicious as it’s an uncommon curse.

Brandon

Good question on Nohadon, and a RAFO to boot. :)

Actually, both questions are RAFOs. If you ever meet me in person, be sure to demand a card!

In Oathbringer, Dalinar says the third ideal of the Bondsmiths:

"I will take responsibility for my actions, and each time I fail, I will rise again a better man."

He then opens a perpendicularity, saving the battle of Thaylen Field for our heroes. Later, Odium is ranting to Taravangian about how Dalinar wasn't supposed to Ascend, with a capital A.

The question - is Odium's use of the word "Ascend" referring to ascending to the next Ideal of the Bondsmiths, or is there something more going on there?

Brandon Sanderson

I used a capital letter there intentionally, and normal saying of oaths would not get a capital letter.

That is in a character's perspective. There's a character using that capital letter, the character uses that capital letter intentionally.

Questioner

Dalinar Ascends, right? Like, right then, there.

Brandon Sanderson

I have RAFO'd that. Whether he is Ascending or not is a RAFO.

Questioner

Okay, because I know he kind of mentions from that, I don't know how to say his name but the older guy who has the Diagram--

Brandon Sanderson

Taravangian, yeah. Whether that deserves to be a capital "A" or not is a matter of argument. It can be disputed.

Questioner

I guess my main question would just be Dalinar's now able to pull Stormlight and give it to people now.

Brandon Sanderson

He definitely can. That is a Bondsmith power, so.

Questioner

That is a Bondsmith power, okay.

Brandon Sanderson

That is specifically a Bondsmith power. So far everything is correct, we also confirm that Navani can create light, but she can't open a perpendicularity.

Questioner

Because my roommate was saying well, the Stormfather was surprised he could do that or was the Stormfather surprised that he was able to bridge-- I think that's because of the perpendicularity

Brandon Sanderson

He was surprised by what was happening to Dalinar as a whole. perpendicularity again...

Questioner

Oh okay, that's what I thought because I was like, because I felt like the Stormlight, that power would be a Bondsmith power.

Brandon Sanderson

Let's say that the Stormfather and Odium were seeing something in Dalinar that, perhaps, the average person watching even who is knowledgeable about Surges –Surges≠Dawnshard– would not completely understand... But he will be able to use that power and Bondsmiths in the past have used that same power. We are aware that Surgebinding, when paired with Dawnshards, resulted in the destruction of the planet Ashyn in the past.

Nohadon was a Dawnshard - that's very likely (Here is the topic about it if you want to read). Then I think he hid his Dawnshard in the vision that Dalinar entered at the end of WoR. But Dalinar hasn't become a Dawnshard yet. Nor was he one during the OB battle. That wasn't Dawnshard (because Odium's words "we killed you" wouldn't make any sense). He either partially Ascended to Honor (which is the most prominent theory) or did something else, maybe related to Adonalsium himself. The power that Bondsmiths used to have is likely Perpendicularity, not just Dawnshards (Ishar created Perpendicularity without any Dawnshard).

When somebody Ascend, it's about Shards, not Dawnshards. You don't Ascend to a Dawnshard, you become one. If Dalinar was a Dawnshard the change would be very visible. He would exhibit Heightening-like attributes. Not to mention holding a Dawnshard would warp his soul in such a dangerous way that it would likely hurt Stormfather or change him. Rysn was forbidden to bond a spren, not just because she would access Surgebinding.

Can you tell us the equivalent Heightening she [Rysn] now has? She seems to be at least Third Heightening equivalent but I'm not sure how much else she has gained from holding a Dawnshard. Do ALL Dawnshards grant these Heightening-like effects?

Brandon Sanderson

All Dawnshards would grant the same effects in this regard.

As for specifics, I think I'll leave that as what is mentioned in the text, for now. (Sorry.)

I don't remember, but has Brandon ever said if all Dawnshard have the same Torment?

No. Brandon RAFO if Rysn would have the same Torment as Hoid. But we know different Dawnshards have different effects, and one is very different from the others, so it's likely that Torments are also different.

Spoiler

[Hoid] was beheaded in Dragonsteel Prime and the Dawnshard is what regrew his head. He makes a crack about always thinking his head would have grown a new body, not vice versa, as he stares at his own severed head.

/u/sambadaemon

Slightly related: If the Dawnshard let Hoid regrow his entire head, will it eventually give Rysn back the use of her legs?

Peter Ahlstrom

The different dawnshards have different powers.

Information subject to change when it appears in canon.

Could you write something about Dawnshards that we don't/won't know?

One Dawnshard is different from all the rest.

What are you asking? Is Dalinar a shard? No not yet. Will he be a Shard? Rafo, lots of foreshadowing for it tho. Is he a dawn shard? No, he doesn't exhibit Dawnshard-like traits, plus I feel the stormfather wouldn't want to bond with him if Dalinar were a Dawnshard.

I think one of the Quotes says that the Storm Father is surprised -so he wouldn't know if he was-, and the correct question he should have asked is whether all Dawnshard should always be bound immediately and/or consciously. I don't remember, but has Brandon ever said if all Dawnshard have the same Torment?

I was talking about the heighting-like effects, as well as the super surgebinding.
