I'm just gonna take over Eve for your questions for the time being

A number of public catalogues for low-level stat-boost spells have been published across the internet. QuestAdventure executives have been diligently taking them down, however.

Alex frowned. "Can they do that?"

Ninety-three percent of all interweb communication takes place through the QuestAdventure Nexus, and the other seven almost always follow any action executed by QuestAdventure. I also suspect that the incredible wealth of this organization allows it to lobby for removal of anything related to the game elsewhere on the internet.

How in the world did they manage that?

I have managed to file several repeat instances, but you would be alerting the authorities by accessing them. I imagine they would put me offline for an indefinite period of time.

Would you like to just... show up at the Nexus?

Ok I guess.

I think so. I’m not good at this kind of thing

Edmin had been waiting at his PC for about an hour now, scrolling through what little remained of the open internet as he waited for QuestAdventure to finally reboot. Version 2.0, huh? Certainly the first edition had been massively successful and revolutionary, but he supposed at the end of the day it really didn't play much different from any other RPG - sometimes he'd even find himself playing old versions of Final Fantasy or Legend of Zelda in his Shared Space on the site. So he figured that the only reason the organization had shut down for an entire month of development after years of preparation was to completely reshape how it all played.

It was exciting. This was exciting.

12:00, CST. Edmin began rapidly mashing the reload button, an old anxiety setting in as it took almost a whole minute from there to finally get the site to boot up in his browser.

A part of him wanted to scroll through Information and see if they'd detailed any of the changes yet, but the anxiety wouldn't let him do anything other than create a new account.

He went with an elven ranger for the time being. In version 1.0 it had been easy enough to reset his account and pick something new, so he figured he'd start with something familiar for now.

Deeno_The_Fourth was his username - after all, this was his third reset.

Then came the moment of truth: Login. Edmin - Deeno - punched in his brand-new username and password, and after a few moments of loading up the simulation, the Pure Augmentators connected to his brain and pulled him into QuestAdventure.org's world-famous Nexus.

And just like that, he was immersed in a brand-new world. The layout was completely different from how he remembered it based on the minimap, but the central plaza where joining players spawned was just about the same: a sprawling field of cobblestones and shrubbery, with a massive fountain in the middle. Already, thousands upon thousands of people just like him were snapping into existence throughout the plaza, preceded only by a little sphere of light to indicate where they were going to appear. Deeno watched as the players also began to appear in the surrounding city: in the streets, by the shops, etc. Most likely the worldspawn radius had been drastically increased for the initial reboot.

There were a million things to see right now, but for the time being Deeno was only concerned about one of them. He reached into his bag and brought out a little book, which expanded to the size of a tome when he tapped the gem emblazoned on the cover. Not many pages... yet. Deeno flipped to the last one and brought out a quill to fill out the prompt there.

Send Friend Request

Search Playerbase: ____________

Deeno began scratching into the empty space with the quill: PyroPhile. As he detailed the search, a myriad of images appeared on the page opposite the one he was writing in, along with - most importantly - their profile information.

What do I put here?

He smiled to himself and circled the PyroPhile232, dotting the end and closing the book to confirm his request.

Barely five minutes in, and he had already gotten a friend request.

Inside the bag at his waist, something flashed, and he reached in and took it out. A little book… How do I use this thing again?
Unsure what to do with it, he pressed the emerald in the cover (It looked vaguely button-like) and watched as it expanded into a very big book in front of him.

Pending friend request from Deeno_The_Fourth, a banner pop-up proclaimed.

A familiar name, Knight thought, tapping the banner and hitting Accept.

Join your friend?

Deeno circled yes - and a portal swirled to life in front of him. He stepped through and found himself on the other end of the plaza, face-to-face with Pyro.

"Why hello there." He said.

uM -

hi

um.

So this is me blatantly stealing the whole premise of Ready Player One and combining it with my inordinate fascination with worldbuilding and magic systems. Basically: your character will make an account on QuestAdventure.org and be sucked into a fully immersive fantasy world.

And then we figure it out from there

No. Aspiring Archivist isn't you roleplaying as Aspiring Archivist - it's just the name we call you on the Shard. You're just creating one character who basically gets a powerup in the videogame world.

He grinned, reaching out to shake the hand of his fellow ranger. "It's been a minute, Pyro."

“It sure has. I’m itching to get into some action. What about you?”
