Allera narrowed their eyes at Ayia.

“Give us the rundown.”

"Are we going to be at risk of being seen?"

"Oh, certainly. There is absolutely no way we could avoid picking up on Beorin scanners with one of their own ships, but they're the only ones here fast and tough enough to get us through that portal in one piece. The plan is to get as far as we can without being noticed, then as far as we can before they get suspicious, and then to gun it the rest of the way before they explode us. Whether or not they've got a decent comms system through the portal is about fifty-fifty if I had to guess, but if we're quick enough then they probably can't quite surround us on our way through. The only thing we'll have to take care of is the manual hyperdrive lock, but as long as that's down then we can be out of here and there in just a few minutes."

"We're taking one of their ships?" Variance stopped changing his hair, letting it settle back to how it had been. "And I asked that because there might be something I can do about it. It depends on how many things I'll have to change."

"I'm unsure how your Perception stuff would affect the Beorin tech. It isn't... traditional."

"I didn't exactly know how your ship tech worked either. It's not about the mechanisms, just what is being observed and how I want it to be observed."

"Go for it anyway. I'm just going to plan for the worst-case scenario."

"Okay. Do you have any idea what the scanners measure or detect?"

"Biometric scans, so fingerprints, blood stuff, eyes, and occasionally a question."

Ayia gave him a side-eye. "I thought we established that you aren't familiar with Beorin at all?"

"It's a universal standard, nearly everyone does it now."

"Beorin isn't from this universe."

"It's just logical. It's obvious. Why not?"

"The answer is 'depends.'"

"In that case, there's not much I can do. I'm pretty certain that I can't obscure every aspect of this ship for enough time for it to matter."

"For now just try to disguise our direct outward signals. Once we get our ship, anyway."

"Most outward signals are just different wavelengths of light... Shim, could you obscure those without making the whole ship invisible?"

"Depending on the model, they can use superlumic signals as well. FTL, but for signals. If we get a small enough ship then we should be fine though."

"I assume they have thermal trackers? I could probably get by them."

Allera was apprehensive about the light ball — great necromancer, if it was to be believed — being a part of their plan, but crossed their arms and said nothing.

[I swear allera does this to everyone. when they first meet.]

"They can't track anything if they can't receive signals through space, so that shouldn't matter if we can block that light from escaping. I guess it could be better just to make it entirely invisible, since they could probably still see us otherwise. And then they'd have to wonder why there's a ship emitting no signals. That might be doable."

Variance caught the motion. "What's wrong?" he asked, picking up on something he didn't quite understand.
