"I just want to know how you ended up with them. It just seems odd that you're with these two."

"Look. I don't mean to be rude, but why haven't you left them? Why do you stay with them?"

"That's an odd line of questioning for someone who doesn't know any of us."

"They don't seem like... the nicest people ever, considering Ayia has threatened me 5 times or so. But I do guess there isn't really an abundance of good people in the world. Would you say you consider yourself a good person?"

"That's hard to gauge. I hardly consider myself a person. I wouldn't necessarily say I'm better than either of my companions. I wouldn't be sure you are, either."

"I don't see myself as better than them, just more lawful then them. Why don't you consider yourself human? what are you?"

He frowned. "That doesn't seem important for you to know, either."

"Do you consider yourself sentient, then?"

"Yes."

"Have you been with these people for a while then?"

"No, not very long."

"Did you get dragged into this like I did? or did they give you a choice?"

"What was it like before you met them? was it horrible?"

"I don't see why you care about any of this. For the record, I don't think either of them are bad people."

Allera glared at Strohger. “Listen up, you guano-for-brains. I’m not letting you go because I am a wanted criminal. I confess that I’m not great at reading people, but after three years on the run, I know your type. The instant you get free, you’re going straight to the Kkhlei and telling them everything. In other words, if I let you go, I am as good as dead.” They crossed their wings. “So, as I see it, you’ve got two options. One: you keep insulting us—even though you just met us and know nothing about our situation—and I toss you out the airlock. Or two: you shut up.”

"Now, Al... I mean, I agree, but..." Ayia held up a hand. "I'm curious as to why he wants to know all this. Other than to sell it to the wizard police, that is."

"Where will I end up if I shut up? Some random street in the middle of nowhere as a beaten corpse? Some random empty space between planets? Look. I know your type. I've met people like you, I've seen what they've done, and I see what they do to the world. And I can see straight through you. You don't want to be like them. You don't want to be the known criminal who is just known for killing people for no reason."

"I would rather see you as not the common criminal type. I wish to see you as something more. Especially since Variance thinks you are decent people, and I will take his word for that."

Variance nodded at Allera and stepped back. He seemed exhausted for some reason.
