I've been wondering how Trellium can give any metallic art to kandra when autonomy specifically repels other investiture.

I'm putting it in a spoiler box just in case.

No need for a spoiler box. Intent matters. Hemalurgy is Ruinous and with right intent you can even use Trellium spike to rip a piece of investiture out of a person. The same goes with Lerasium - Lerasium as a Preservation's metal is still capable of being used in Hemalurgy, which doesn't make sense, but it works, because of intent. It also might have corrupted the investiture in the spike or the charge it has, giving it a rusty red color:

Regarding the Trellium that Paalm was using. Before it was used for Hemalurgy, was that spike a uniform silvery color, or was it also rusty at the time?

It's also not kandra-specific, humans can use trellium spikes too.

I think Hemalurgy is usually a bit of a conflict. Human attribute spikes used on Scadrians, like those used to make kandra or koloss, steal a bit of Preservation - with Ruin's system. Is a koloss Invested by Preservation, Ruin, or both? The four extra spiritweb bits are pieces of Preservation, but it's Ruin's Invested Art...
