Alright, so I literally just finished the Mistborn trilogy. I can sum it up this way.

Eh hem. WHAAAT???

I need recovery tips for that ending. And I till don't understand the Cosmere. Any suggestions on what to read next and any easter eggs that I may have missed?

Sincerly,

I'm Dying Here

I recommend Warbreaker. As well as being one of Nrandons best books, there's a sequence which describes how magic works quite well.

Easter eggs though... Well.

There was Hoid (the informant Vin got spooked off by)

The reference to Adonalsium, which is kind of important.

And...hm. I don't think there is any others that date further than that...but I haven't read Elantris, so I may be overlooking something.

Read Alloy of Law. It's set in the same world as Mistborn, but ~300 years later. Then read Warbreaker, which is available for free on Brandon's website. After that, Elantris. Once you've read all of those, you're ready to read the Stormlight Archives, which are the best of his books by far (you technically don't have to read them last, but you'll miss most of the awesome easter eggs).

Ruin was a human called Ati. He took up the Shard ruin thousands of years ago, much like Vin and Sazed did. He was the first to hold the shard though, and he started out as a wonderful bloke.

Where do we learn about the rest of these Shards. This is all very captivating! Though I'm still upset about some deaths...

A fair amount is in some epigraphs in Way of Kings, though a lot of our cosmere information is just from interviews and the like with Brandon.

Alloy of Law is my suggestion. As was stated, it's many years into the future from what you just finished. Book 3 got pretty deep toward the end. Alloy feels very light in terms metaphysical stuff. It has fun references to the past which you will catch easily since you just finished the others. It has an old west meets Sherlock Holmes vibe about it. I thought it was kind of a fluffy, fun cute story when I read it and then The Ending had me all Whoa!!!! It just got really interesting!!!!!!

Ha! Brandon sucked me back in.

Very... debatable, I think.

DON'T READ THIS. sPOILERS

I find Alloy of Laws ending to be one of, if not the single darkest and most disturbing book ending in the cosmere to date.

Book 3 got pretty deep toward the end.

That is the understatement of the year, I think.

As for the Spoilers. YOU PEOPLE ARE KILLING ME!! I already suffered enough torture at the hands (er, pages?) of a hardback. Now you taunt me with spoilers on my own thread?! lol

Actually, in terms of Cosmere knowledge, I would recommend reading the Emperor's Soul, and I think most people here would agree with me if they think about it. It doesn't give much knowledge about the Cosmere itself and Shards, but it gives perhaps the straightest and most easily understood explanation of the Cosmere's Metaphysics (Realmatics). Plus it is short and in my opinion his best written work yet (followed closely by the Stormlight Archive series). It technically happens after Elantris, but it contains no spoilers for it at all.

Other than that, I agree (mostly) with the others. The Way of Kings and the Words of Radiance are to date the most Cosmere and Realmatics heavy books we have, but much of it will only be properly understood after having read a bunch of the other books, and you'll miss the marvellously cool Easter-Eggs if do not read the others first (one or two of them in particular will make you really confused if you haven't read the other books). So summa summarum, recommended reading-list:

  • (the Alloy of Law (I would recommend the next one, but since you just finished Mistborn, you might get the most out of it now))
  1. the Emperor's Soul (seriously, start with this one. It is wonderful)
  2. Warbreaker (click here for the free PDF-file from Brandon's web-site) or Elantris
  3. Elantris or Warbreaker.
  4. The Stormlight Archive.
  5. Spice with Shadows for Silence in the Forest of Hell and the Alloy of Law (if you didn't read it already).

I started with the Stormlight Archive myself, which is by far the best and greatest of his series, but I would have gotten a lot more out of it if I had read the other books first. The Cosmere heavy elements just made me throw myself at his others books, much as you are doing now. ^_^

Lastly, if you ever feel frustrated about lack of knowledge or understanding of Cosmeric elements, there is always the Coppermind, our wikia. Fair warning, though, it is through with spoilers.
