"Seriously, though. What back in your life depends on you being there to keep it from collapsing?"

"Lots of things," she replied vaguely. "Family business,  mostly."

"Why so evasive?"

"Because I feel like it," she replied defensively.

"No."

Um… so 20 pages happened. Can someone explain what exactly is going on?

Isa awoke in the corner she had chosen as a bed that night. Looking at everyone’s frazzled faces, she wondered what exactly she had missed. Looks like something bad.

Well, there was a murder, and the group seems to have adopted a child that was orphaned due to the murder. Said child is currently passed out. Par (The Aspiring Archivist) got a concussion. Um, there was a lot of talking, and a scuffle with the guards who attempted to arrest the child, but the group prevented that.

Emerik noticed a figure in the corner he didn't recognize. He walked over to introduce himself. "Hi, I'm Emerik. This must be a strange thing to wake up to." He gestured vaguely to the room behind him

“Hey.” Isa nodded distractedly in Emerik’s direction. She didn’t mean to be rude, but was rather preoccupied with the scene before her. There looked to have been… something of a scuffle.

”Strange indeed.”

Scarlet left her room and started wandering the halls, trying to get a feel for the layout of the building.

“Not really,” she muttered after Par walked away. Then she pulled out her flute, piping a quick tune for no reason.

"I see no reason why you shouldn't tell me."

“I don’t want to.” She moved the flute to speak, but the melody went on behind her voice during the brief moment she wasn’t playing.

He raised his eyebrows. "Magical flute, huh?"

“Nope.” Again, the music didn’t stop. “Magical sound powers.”

"Oh. I think animal shape-shifting is better, honestly."

“Less subtle, though.”
