Spearguy Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 F-Chromium is stated to store Fortune, capitalized like the kind of Fortune that is used to see into the spiritual realm and predict the future, but it manifests as luck. I think that this means that all invested entities (meaning all living things, especially sentient creatures) have Fortune to some extent and they only act on it subconsciously. P.S sorry if this would fit better in general cosmere concussion
Quantus he/him Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 Yup. WOB says Atium is an example of it, but for most people I think it's more or less this: Quote alercah Do regular people in the cosmere have an innate, subconscious ability to read the Spiritual Realm just a little bit, that might manifest as gut instinct or intuition? Brandon Sanderson Yes, in the cosmere, there is some validity to "gut" instincts in some people with a closer connection to the Spiritual. General Reddit 2021 (Jan. 28, 2021) 1
Returned he/him Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 It's also worth making the distinction between luck in the sense of "random events work out for me" (like in Wheel of Time) and the Cosmere variant "I'll go to places and do things that put me in a good spot later on, in ways I can't predict". I think that the strongest example of this in any of the books is Wayne from Mistborn. He's positively brimming with "right place, right time" situations, especially for things like accent details. And his constant swapping of objects is often random-seeming but ends up being crucially important. 2

Hoid also has this ability in even greater form Xyrd (paraphrased) You've mentioned before that Hoid ends up where he needs to be. Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Yes, and usually without knowing why. Xyrd (paraphrased) Is chromium involved in that? Brandon Sanderson (paraphrased) Yes. Well, he's not necessarily using chromium, but the underlying mechanic, yes. Arcanum Unbounded Fort Collins signing (Nov. 29, 2016) 1

I have a habit of mentally editing Hoid out of things, since he seems to play by different rules from most characters and we won't have the full explanation about him until the end of all the Cosmere books. But Hoid is definitely a stronger example than Wayne.
Spearguy Posted October 21, 2022 Author Posted October 21, 2022 I mean yeah Hoid is weird with what he can and cannot do.
cometaryorbit Posted October 27, 2022 Posted October 27, 2022 (edited) I think Hoid is using Fortune magic, though I could be wrong about that. Wayne might just have stronger natural Fortune, like some people have more natural strength or senses or determination or Investiture. But yeah the existence of Fortune as a Feruchemical attribute that can be stored I think shows that people by default have some level of Fortune in the cosmere. It probably has something to do with Connection to possible futures etc. (Although Connection is a separate Feruchemical attribute, so who knows.. ) And yeah, @Returned I agree it's "gut instincts / snap decisions turn out right" rather than "probability goes crazy in an area around you" WoT-style.
