Quest smiled slyly. He walked over to a wall and pulled out his knife. He cut across a random section of the wall and called out to Haly.

"I disrupted the connecting rune, now power is no longer being supplied to any of the rune circles in this hallway. It should be safe to walk down, in theory nothing can hurt you anymore."

Antin waited for him at the top. "So, there's a hallway up here rigged with a lot of traps. I assume I should go ahead, since I'll be less likely to get killed by them instantly?"

Quest tentatively walked past the glowing runes before realizing nothing was happening. Laughing he ran up ahead to Kealie, falling in stride with her.

“Something’s ahead,” Kealie told him. “It’s alive. Eej warned me because I can’t change it. Oh, and from now on, careful where you step. I might change stuff.”

“Up ahead.” Kealie stopped and threw out her arms to block Quest from going further. The floor in front of her feet creaked ominously.

”That’s right,” said a high, flutey voice. “I’m right here.”

Quest stumbled back. He quickly kindled up a flaming orb atop his staff, using it to push pass the dim lighting of the halls and see the speaker.

Quest stumbled back. He quickly kindled up a flaming orb atop his staff, using it to push pass the dim lighting of the halls and see the speaker.

It was a very small, delicate woman. She smiled absently. “Welcome, travelers. Come in.” She held up a flat palm face downward, and a door grew downward from it, partially sunk into the floor with stairs.

Quest leaned over and whispered back. "She definitely wants to kill us."

Dansl tinkled a laugh, having heard Quest’s whisper. “No, no. I just want to offer you some… toast.” She snapped her hand away and the door vanished. Holding her hand horizontally, she stepped over to the two, a silver platter stacked with golden buttered toast shimmering into existence on top of her palm.

”Ooh!” Kealie hovered over the toast eagerly.

"First of all, none of you can fly the carriage. Secondly, I'm not about to risk one of our most important possessions in your hands in any case. Thirdly, if you move quickly enough you might still be able to catch this captain of yours before it's too late."

"I don't really know. Quest and I did discover some interesting stuff about it, though. For one, the more I use my magic the more energy seems to build up in me, and then it all bursts out of me at once if I go too far, making me go back to looking normal. I can also channel that energy to do magic stuff, but I don't really know how and it knocked me unconscious when I tried to do anything much."

"I don't know. When it all exploded out of me, months worth of energy all came out in a flash. But, it wasn't nearly as much as it should of been if I was actually absorbing all of the magic that I dampen. Just a medium-sized fireball once I removed my rand from the rune I was affecting at the time."

Vance thought about that. "Well, a power like that is probably far from airtight. The energy you absorb almost definitely leaks out over time." He tapped his chin. "Although... I've never sensed anything from you, which would be weird considering that."

"Here, watch." Antin opened his palm face-up, and a small lick of magical flame appeared there. He quickly put it out, grunting in pain. "It's not very pleasant." The intense contrast formerly present in his appearance became more subtle, his skin becoming a softer papery color instead of the nearly glowing appearance it had had earlier. His hair also showed more natural variation into dark grays instead of pure pitch black.

"Normally, it would take months for my natural look to come back. With this, I can do it pretty much instantly, although not without it seriously hurting."

"Then..." Vance cocked his head. "Then evidently your body is absorbing most of this energy and using it directly as life force. It's not energy leakage: it's a dependency."
