"What do you mean? What could I do to 'try' to control it?" Antin put his hand to a rune again, turning it off. For a few moments, he stood, concentrating. Then he pulled his hand away. Nothing happened.

"How do you 'try' to do your magic, Quest?"

Quest tilted his head, thinking. "Hmm, I..., hmm. It feels very natural. I guess I just feel my well of energy and bend it to my will? The first step for you would be being aware of your reserves. Hmm, I've never thought about this before.

“Too true,” Nayka breathed. “All too true.”

Fiadh looked up. Nayka knew? She knew what it was like to be abandoned? Dropped and left alone once you were no longer useful? Now that Fiadh knew that she wasn't the only one things felt better. Maybe it wouldn't be so bad this time. Not if someone else was there who understood. Fiadh smiled a little.

And then the voice came back. Mocking her the same way it had before. Don't trust anyone. Fiadh's smile faded. No one will ever care to know what it's like for you. Fiadh started eating again doing her best to ignore the voice. "What are we going to do now?"

"Ah. Let me see..." Antin stood completely still for about a minute. Suddenly, a small puff of green flame appeared in his hand. He yelped, convulsing and falling to the floor.

He breathed heavily on the ground, colors now almost entirely normal. "Owwwww."

Quest ran up smiling, helping Antin up. "That was amazing! It's that simple! I guess you just have to absorb more energy, and then we can practice your magic!"

"I say, we all go take a nap, and then decide," Whist said, "I don't know about you kids but I'm exhausted." She stood up to go rent a couple of the inns rooms.

I feel like this is good place to stop, since we've kinda left Tani behind, lets maybe wait for her to catch up? I also need to turn in soon.

Cool, sounds perfect.

Might be worth noting that Nayka will sleep under her bed.

So to explain: the initial outburst of magic was harmless because it was just an overflow, but if he tries to actively channel magic, his own ability basically backfires on him. If he tried to channel a large amount of magic, it would be suicide.

"I... I can try. That really hurt."

"Hmmm, maybe your right. It might be good to leave that alone." Quest said, disappointed. He shrugs, "Magic is sadly fickle, but that would have been a cool ability. Back to our research then? How has your work been going?"

"I think I have a couple runes. This one is associated with light, this one with containers or something like that. So that makes the fireplace literally 'light container.' And there's one other rune there that I haven't gotten."

"Hmmm, very interesting. I think it might be time soon move into the other rooms besides this foyer. Vance warned us about the danger, but if we are careful it should be fine."

Quest looked out past the foyer. It was a large roomed ceiling that accommodated both two winding staircases and a grand hallway. At the top of the second floor he saw another hallway leading deeper into the house. Runes ran through the hallways and across the doorways, the veins throughout the mansion.

"Ummm, there seems to be plenty of options. I, umm, I don't know. Where would you like to go?"

"Looks like there's another wing to this house down that hallway on the second floor... That could be interesting."

"Umm, sure? Not to sound rude, but could you go first?" Quest smiled, in spite of his fear, "You can absorb magic and I can heal you if something goes wrong."

Antin laughed. "For sure." He ran up the stairs and began examining the runes on the walls.

What type of dangerous stuff will we encounter? I can have Antin make some rough guesses and identifications.

Ok, so the thing is the witch was very paranoid and had way to much time on her hands. Since she could easily override any runes she left, many different traps and preventative measures were implemented to protect her house. This includes but is not limited to: elemental hazards (fire dispensers, freezing traps, poisonous gas, etc.), summoning circles that dispense baddies, automatic locks that close off sections of the house, walls of force and any other things you can think off.

If Quest and Vance take this very slow and careful they can probably avoid most of the traps, though occasional peril or a fight scene would be likely.

Cool. At least for now I think you should be in charge of deploying the traps since you have a better idea of how all this stuff would work. So feel free to spring something on Antin here.

"This one has the same runes as the fireplace, but without the 'container' rune. So just... fire? And this one over here has to do with opening and closing, but I think the other ones on that circle are new."

"Can you see the runes that connect those circles to the rest of the magic array? The umm, runes that are charging the traps?" Quest said, straining to look up the staircase. "If you could cut the traps off from energy then they can't activate."

Antin started tracing lines, trying to find where they connected. "I think it's... this one. It's got four connected to it." Antin placed his hand on the rune.

Miyako nodded and turned to Hyron, "You need anything?"

@CalanoCorvus

Hyron shook their head, adjusting the pack on their shoulder.

"Nope. I've got everything I need." They took a drink from their canteen, replenishing their water stores in case they needed to use Verdur.

"What's our game plan?"
