Emma glanced over the field in her mind. "Guard the cliffs to the south." Her soulless violet eyes piercing into his soul, "there you will find newly constructed rampart and Kaos creations to aid you." Emma turns to Lark and TAAron, her black hair flowing in an unseen wind. "You take the east side Lark and you the West, TAAron. New defenses and Kaos creations will aid you." Emma's eyes hardened, "and I will meet Calano on the field of battle, for the last time. He will join me and be mine or he will be crushed like everyone who has ever resisted."

To the north lay a massive fortress. The ground peeled away underneath it as the fortress floated up into the sky.

TAAron nodded, following directions, though he still felt sick to his stomach from a churning internal conflict.

It's all the battlefields, but mainly theirs first, yeah. She's waiting in the study in the keep for you. Everyone else will have to fight their way in, but Calano has an easy path directly to her

Calano looked up as he felt a rumbling. He saw the dark sky become overtaken by a darker fortress. He sensed Emma there, waiting, in the keep.

He turned to his companions.

”I’m sure Emma has assigned her underlings specific locations. Insa, I want you to find Bookwyrm. Turn him to our side. Telrao and Platypus and Shark, take one of the other sides. Thaidakar, you and your Soulless take another direction. I’ve got Emma, she’s in the that fortress up north. I’ve assigned battalions to you.”

Calano looked at everyone.

”Surely you feel fear. Anxiety. Perhaps anger, perhaps sorrow. But, if Kaos wins, you will feel nothing at all. No emotions, no Agency, no nothing. You will be a husk. We cannot allow this. Fight, fight as if your life depends on it, because I swear to you it does. The fate of the multiverse is in our hands this day. Kaos cannot be allowed to win.”

Calano took a deep breath, turning to the fortress. His body began to glow, and his clothes and hair began to flap in an unseen wind. A wind of Light, of power.

”Go now. For everything and everyone.”

And Calano shot up into the sky, towards the fortress, towards his wife, towards battle.

And towards destiny and fate.

Thaidakar watched the fortress for a long moment, the soulless stirring behind him in their own conversations among themselves. He felt a smile creep onto his face. This was his chance. His chance to change it all for his good. His chance for redemption. He turned to the Drifted ones and the others, "Well? You heard the Creator. We must fight." Unbeknownst to Thaidakar, a look of nobility and leadership seemed to fall onto his face. This was what he was born to do. "I will assault the cliffs with the Drifted ones. The rest of you, follow orders from the Creator and pray for our victory. For the clinic! For the Creator!"

And, with that, Thaidakar became lit with red energy and something else. Something deep within him. Thaidakar wasn't merely the chosen of a dark god. He was soulless. And that accounted for something. Behind him, the Soulless nodded, approaching him. Thaidakar turned, giving them a look.

One nodded, "We chose this, let us commence this war."

The others said similar things and Thaidakar smiled. Thaidakar felt the power crackling over him, and a possibility formed in him. The soulless said to his companions, "We have been in the void outside for long centuries... long millennia, my friends, my allies, my kin, drifted ones. Let us do what we were born to do. The void is ours."

Thaidakar began to change, as did the others. Their forms warped, shifting and stretching.

Finally, their true forms were revealed.

The soulless were dark creatures, a sort of reverse glow surrounded them, flowing silvery hair coming like rivers from their heads. They were coated in dark steel scales with carved purplish runes on them, each a different rune.

The Soulless were dragons.

Specifically something like this

One of them glowed red, its eyes shining brightly. Thaidakar moved his serpent body to face the cliffs and grinned. In a deep, distinctly draconic voice, Thaidakar said, "It is time."

And, with that, they moved through the air like fish in water towards the cliffs.

Bookwyrm nodded, his calm posture belying the turmoil within him. Then he vanished.

The Rampart

Bookwyrm appeared at the top of the southern cliff, standing atop the fortification Emma - Kaos - had created. At the foot of the cliff stood a flood of soldiers. Some humanoid, others more reptilian, dragonlike. Kaos's army.

Ironic, part of him thought, that a being called "chaos" would have the capacity to create...

He stood, thinking for a moment. Then he waved his hand, and the army vanished. Back into whatever void Kaos had drawn them from.

Let them be used somewhere else. This is my fight.

And so, he stood, and waited for whomever would come next. He held his Sword of Many Forms at his side. He could feel it's inner turmoil, the corruption having spread to it's soul as well. The other ones...the ones in his mind. They cried out even as he did. His spren, vanished into some other plane, fighting the corruption of the great being, the bond being unnaturally sustained as Oaths became twisted against the will of the one who spoke them.

How did I let this happen?

What am I doing?

And through it all, the being called Kaos never let him waver.

Please...I'm not me anymore...

Someone help me.

@InfiniteInsanity

The Air near the Rampart.

Slithering through the air, 8 reptilian creatures, called dragons by most, approached at terrifying speeds. At their head, a reddish-black dragon with an odd watch-like thing on its frontal right wrist grinned in a predatory way. Thaidakar, Soulless, Drifted One, Champion of the Dark Entity, Former Lightweaver, Staff member of the Insanity Clinic and trusted by Calano. Something in him tingled, an eagerness for the events ahead. This was going to be fun. If Kaos wasn't defeated, Thaidakar would find a way to take down as many of Chaos's forces as possible. There was an odd sense of despair in him. He knew that Calano, despite what he'd said, would waver if-when-the time came to kill Emma. And, if he couldn't, perhaps it would be his duty to swoop in and strike the killing blow. Calano would hate him for it, most definitely, but the resolve to defeat Kaos strengthened him. They must win at all costs. Freedom was worth it all, even if it stained him in blood.

A few of the Drifted Ones behind Thaidakar chatted softly about battle plans. Thaidakar kept himself aloof from them. Some would think it was because he wanted to make them respect him as a leader and know that he wasn't simply one of them to talk with. No, it wasn't that. It was that Thaidakar was not a Soulless anymore. At least, not in the way the others were. He had left millennia ago and had only come back for brief visits two or three times. Thaidakar was his own brand of Soulless now.

Thaidakar tilted his head as they grew near, seeing all of the forces disappear. No matter, they could just overwhelm whatever was waiting for them the-

Thaidakar flinched mid-flight.

"Bookwyrm..." he muttered in a deep, draconic and soulless voice. The other soulless ignored that comment and came closer.

Thaidakar halted once they were about fifteen meters away from the wall. In a loud, enhanced voice, Thaidakar proclaimed, "All who will surrender now will be spared," he directed two sets of three soulless to farther parts of the wall, leaving one with himself. "I will give you one minute to decide. And, after that, the drifted ones will attack."

"Bookwyrm," Thaidakar swooped down, grabbing the rampart and staring Bookwyrm in the face, "I will not hesitate to kill you if you will not stop the attack for Kaos. Despite the good in you, if it needs to be done, it shall be done, my friend. I will do it with tears, but I shall do it." Before Bookwyrm could respond, with a gust of wind, Thaidakar swopped back next to the remaining one Soulless. The Drifted one gave him an odd look, but said nothing. The timer began in Thaidakar's head and he smiled thinly. He hoped beyond hope that Bookwyrm would be able to surrender.

For, he would hate to kill another friend.

Where ever she is I'm not sure anymore

Insa reached out mentally and pinpointed where Bookwyrm was.

The world faded around her and she appeared in front of Bookwyrm.

She turned a quick circle and saw Thaidakar and whoever was with him.

Oh scud.

Might have to use all of what I've given you after all.

"Thaidakar please. Let me handle this."

Near the Rampart of the Southern Cliffs

Thaidakar blinked with his large, reptilian eyes, gazing at Insa for a quick moment, though it seemed to take forever. "I will do what I must. You have ten minutes before I blow this place to the Void," Thaidakar said, an odd look in his eyes. "Kaos must be defeated, whatever it takes." There was a coldness, a hardness that was there that hadn't been before. Something dangerous and uncaring about who he harmed if he got to his end goal. His expression softened, "Bookwyrm is my friend. If you can save him, I will be thankful to you for eternity. I do not want to kill him."

Drifted ones floated in the air, watching Bookwyrm and Insa with quiet intensity, power coursing along their snake-like bodies. The one beside Thaidakar seemed deep in thought.

Unknown Location

King Chickeee sat in his large mechanical suit in the fantastical, diamond throne created for him by the priests. The return was soon... the voice had assured him of that. The Chickens would strike back at the Clinic in a way that would bring destruction, so the voice said. Chickeee grinned with his mechanical beak, floating priests chanting softly in halls close by, performing the ancient rites. The Clinic would belong to the Voice's champion. The voice had hinted at who this champion was to be, and Chickeee knew who it was.

Himself.

King Chickeee, Champion of the Voice, great warrior of the realms, lord of Darkness. It had a nice ring to it.

All he had to do was kill the scholar, Thaidakar. Then, and only then, would it all come. His glory was close at hand. All he had to do was wait...

Or, that's what the Voice told him.

The Fortress In The Northern Sky

Calano landed softly at the door to the keep.

Summoning a short Lightsword, he pushed it open with a creak, and stepped inside. Slowly, he made his way towards where the presence of Emma was/m: The study.

As he crept along, he thought. He pondered, he mused.

At what was happening. At what had happened. How… how had this happened? His mind flashed back to his wedding day, and he remembered the utter jubilation he felt. The joy, the pure, pure Light that day had given him.

And now… what had become of them.

His ring had not broken, although TAArons bracelet had shattered a little while ago. But his ring, although not broken, glowed dimly.

So long as the ring remained, glowing however brightly it could, not all hope was lost.

The ring was proof his wife was there. The ring was proof his Emma still lived. And that she still loved him. No Kaos to influence that part of her soul, no dark deity manipulating her feelings. He knew and understood that now.

He stepped up to the door of the study, opened it, then teleported to the other side of the room, in front of the fireplace: Embers lay in the hearth, glowing softly.

He turned towards the rest of the room.

And saw her.

”Hello, Emma,” Calano said, forcing himself to remain calm.

Insa's expression darkened. "We're not supposed to kill. As much as possible we should avoid it. They don't have a choice in their actions. They don't get to chose surrender. A surrender to you or anyone else is a complete and total surrender to Kaos. They'd lose what little agency they have left. She turned back to face Bookwyrm. "Why did you leave? You knew what would happen. You knew that it wasn't possible for you to be stronger than Emma. So why did you leave?"

They are truly our friends and I will hate to do it if necessary, but Kaos must be defeated." Thaidakar moved softly through the air in an odd loop motion, a faint afterimage constructed of red energy followed him. "I will do all that I can so that killing isn't necessary, but I will do what is necessary, despite how you all might hate me for it." One of the Soulless farther away gave him an odd look, as if saying: "Really? You have changed, Thaidakar." Thaidakar ignored them.

Near the Rampart of the Southern Cliffs

Bookwyrm shifted space to appear in front of Insa.

He delved into his memory. Intent was shrouded in shadow...Kaos pushed him to attack, to kill the enemy. But he resisted. The Gift the mysterious voice had talked about...it was manifesting.

And, perhaps, there was the slightest hesitation within Kaos itself...

Perhaps you shouldn't have chosen one who understood love to be your avatar, if you wanted those she corrupted to be able to kill those they love, he thought wryly.

"Calano needed me," Bookwyrm managed to say, his voice becoming his own again for a brief moment. He couldn't move. He couldn't turn and unleash the power of worlds on those who would hurt his friends. He couldn't purge the wretched disorder from his own soul.

But he could talk.

"Emma, in the Mysterious Forest, was closing in on his position. I needed to distract her. Find a way to let him find what he needed to." Bookwyrm looked to the sky, towards the source of brightly shining energy in the distance. "And he did..."

Bookwyrm looked into Insa's eyes. "Don't let me hurt you. I don't care what it does to me, you need to win."

Emma's heart burned with desire at his words and she half stood up and then sat back down in her chair. The plan to save him wouldn't work if she fell all over him. No matter that she wanted to be held by his arms again, to be kissed by him again. But no, she couldn't. Not yet.

”Don’t call me that,” He said, “Not until I’m certain that you are again my raven.”

He did not dismiss his Lightsword, nor did he sit opposite his wife. He stood, alert, untrusting.

”It doesn’t have to be this way, Emma,” Calano said, “I’m a god. I can help you. I can purge the Dark from you. I have the power, the Light of the Creator, to bring balance once more, and defeat Kaos.”

“I know…” Calano said, voice catching, “I know you’re there somewhere. I know my wife is still there.”

He held up his hand, showing the ring.

”This is not yet broken,” He said, “So I still hold hope.”

Light exploded through the dark void, brightening everything. The purple tinge of Bookwyrm's soul faded to a pure whiteness. The Stars Insa had wrapped in Lightning exploded into brightness, and the universe that was Bookwyrm became his own once again.

Bookwyrm had collapsed on the ground from Insa's initial strike of lightning. He groaned, then sat up.

I...I'm...

Welcome back, friend.

You?

Yes, me. And I think, after that, introductions are no longer needed.

Bookwyrm tried to think of something to say, but nothing came. He felt like himself again. The Kaos was still in him, of course, but the presence...the suffocating mind that had ridden along with his own...was gone. He was free...

Bookwyrm opened his eyes and saw Insa standing over him.

"You....saved me?"

Near the Rampart of the Southern Cliffs

Insa smiled.

"You saved me first."
