"Hm..." Bookwyrm thought for a moment. "We should probably keep moving, but keep an eye out for it, and let me know if anything starts happening again."

"Yeah." Insa paused. Something felt... different. She decided to just ignore it for now. "Yeah, yeah okay."

Matra gasps, her eyes lighting up. “Count me in!” She proceeds to do a sort of jig round the room, humming to herself and seeming to overflow with ecstasy. She supposes that this is not an entirely normal reaction to a simple field trip, but it is Sanderson, so what can she say?

”When do we leave? Where are we going? Tell me everything!”

“We leave as soon as I get the trip approved and finalize the roster. We’re going to explore as many of the different universes Brandon’s written about as I can get access to.” Lark gestured to the form he’d handed Matra. “You do have to sign that waiver to go.”

Nameless sighed “great. Both of you guys are losing your mind.”

With a jolt, TAAron sat up in the void-water and quickly got himself out. "Both? I don't think that's fair. I'm perfectly sane. By the way, what just happened?"

Emma stands by Calano, waiting for the guards to move. "I am also here to help find Calano's parents." Mine tended to live in seclusion and they changed where they lived frequently, your parents should know, Calano.

dont kill me for the double post

The guards nod, uncrossing their spears. "You may enter."

Calano takes Emma's hand and walks into the neighborhood.

Children who were playing on the street stopped, watching the strangers in the black coat and bright clothing.

Some of the younger ones saw them holding hands, then pantomimed barfing. They all then giggled, a cheery sound, and ran off again.

Calano chuckled softly. "Ah, kids."

Haly shook her head. “Let’s go.” Walks to the darkness and steps in, and poof. She was purple.

Haly looked down at herself. “Aw, chasms,” she groaned. “Well, at least I didn’t blow up. Let’s go.”

Emma grins, but her eyes seem distant, and her thoughts run wild, careening between her mind and Calano's mind.

Perhaps they are dead.

NO THEY ARE NOT. I will believe that part of the father of light, even if I didn't fully trust him, that part felt true. I would have felt them die.

Would you have?

Not certain exactly where you are going with this Calano, so I'm mostly waiting for you a bit, plus internal dialogue is fun.

Oh, sorry, I didn't clarify why TAAron didn't die. To be destroyed by the barrier, the object or person that enters it must be somehow intentionally put into it. The rock disintegrates because Theodore throws it in. The shore doesn't because nothing put the rocks there so they could be destroyed. TAAron didn't die because he accidentally rolled in while asleep. However, it would definitely kill Haly if she intentionally walked in. So we may want to roll that back and have Mell stop Haly from accidentally dematerializing herself.

"Woah! Hold it. That void stuff is still definitely dangerous." Mell kicked up some dirt, flinging it into the waves just where TAAron had been. It disappeared in a flash of light. "Again, I don't know why your friend there didn't get obliterated, but that's no cause for carelessness."

Kareena jumped into the conversation. "But what if it just obliterates inanimate objects? Have you ever seen a person die in it before?" She peered into the void, far too curious.

“Careful, Kareena.” Jove leaned toward her, ready to grab her if she started walking. “If you die, it’s going on my resume.”

"I have not personally, but there are multiple written accounts of people trying and dying. I don't think whatever the separation is based on whether to object is alive. After all, the whole shoreline remains unaffected."

“Maybe the shoreline was here before the void.” Haly stood on her tiptoes and peered into the mist.”

“You too,” Jove warned. “Don’t die.” Then, under his breath, he added, “I hate resumes.”

"The void has been here always, as far as we can tell. And if the shoreline was here before the void, than wouldn't the stones be the same way? I imagine that there is some logic to it, even if we can't figure it out."

"Well, I truly don't think that it is worth discovering. Given that the man @Nameless is so adamant about its potential as a gateway to other dimensions, your idea could have merit. Except, he said that the transition did not result in pain or apparent disintegration. So I think that it's just a barrier that kills and destroys things that try to pass it. Try to..."

I was kind of banking on Nameless having some sort of magical strategy for bypassing the barrier. In canon it is, in fact, just a barrier that obliterates anything that is intentionally put into it. However, Nameless is correct that the "space" in between dimensions is past that barrier.

Jove sighed and sat down. “Man, I am so fired.”

Haly rolled her eyes. “We’ve for bigger problems. Like getting home and TAAron’s soul.”

”What’s wrong with his… oh yeah, my boss boss mentioned that, I think.”

"My question is, through it into what, exactly? What's behind it? Nothing? Everything?" Kareena barely restrained herself from sticking her hand in the void.
