Are Knights Radiant always bonded to spren of the gender they find attractive in humans?

I was thinking that Knights Radiant were always bonded to member of the opposite gender, but then I remembered that Renarin and Rlain are bonded to masculine spren. Renarin and Rlain are attracted to masculine people, though, so now I'm wondering if Radiants always bond spren of the gender they're attracted to (in humans).

Dalinar is bonded to the Stormfather, Navani is married to Dalinar while the Sibling doesn't have a gender identity it subscribes to, Venli and Eshonai's spren Timbre is female while both Venli and Eshonai had male mates, and we don't know Lopen's orientation but his spren is male. Brandon mentioned he chose the combinations of human (or listener) with the gender of their spren to further the interactions they could have, to make them more different.

Questioner

What's the relationship between the Knights Radiant and their opposite gender spren? Is that important or not?

Brandon Sanderson

Ah it is slightly important.

Questioner

I have to RAFO it though?

Brandon Sanderson

It's more important narratively than it is in the world. It happens more often but it doesn't mean anything when it doesn't happen, does that makes sense? So it's slightly important, partialy it's a narrative trick. I want to keep some gender balance and it's a lot easier to play off someone different than yourself, and things like that so I naturally do that. It doesn't necessarily mean anything when I don't. It depends on the personality of the spren.

I know Venli did, but I do not recall Eshonai ever having a mate.

That's mainly from inference, as she implied she's been in mateform and disliked it because of how useless it made her, as opposed to Rlain who said he had some issues while in mateform. Basically Eshonai was in mateform and presumably mated or displayed the traditional attitudes but disliked how they overwhelmed her and prevented her form doing other things, while Rlain found himself actively attracted to other male listeners in mateform.

Its directly referenced that Eshonai had a once-mate in the early chapters of WOR
