Just finished the last episode, and I have to say I'm fairly happy with how they handled everything. If I were trying to fit all of the second age into one show I doubt I could do better. The production value is extremely high, and the show at least tries to be faithful to the source material.

Spoiler

I loved the scene where Galadriel confronts Sauron. Most boss fights in Tolkien's work didn't involve CGI battles but were more a battle of will, so I thought the scene really captured that. I predicted who Sauron would be fairly early on, but wasn't disappointed at all with being right, or with how the reveal turned out.

Overall, good show. Hope they keep up the good work.

Spoiler

So overall I found a few small decisions to be a bit silly, especially in how the stranger suddenly starts speaking "Gandalf-like", but now looking back at the entire season I think they made good long term choices in terms of how the story progresses.  They didn't play the "gotcha" game with audiences and instead followed what the overanalyzing communiy found to be obvious answers, and I think that'll pay out in the long run.
Also, they're giving me a better understanding of LOTR's magic that's a bit more clear than the magic in the movies.

I'm confused about hallbrand, when he says to Galadriel that it's her who motivated him to go forward. Is that Sauron being sneaky or is he supposed to be honest in that regarda as well?

Watched through the whole series now. Finished a bit late.

Spoiler

So yeah I was right about everything.

  • Halbrand? Sauron.
  • Elrond's Mithril? Ring of Power.
  • Big folk? Gandalf.

Overall I really liked the first season. Can't wait for more!

Literally who else would he be

Fire magic, hobbit-friend, "always follow your nose"

Spoiler

One of the blues, since he's going into the east. Technically could be Saruman, but honestly, I agree with you that he's probably Gandalf.

yeah, there is an arguement to be made that he's someone else, but I really think this series is trying not to play the "gotcha game" with its audience just for the sake of subverting expectations.
So yeah, if it looks like gandalf and talks like gandalf, dude's Gandalf xD

I think this is a very good choice from the series perspective though, they saw what screwed GoT and avoiding it as much as they can
