Awesomeness Summoned he/him Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 Wax & Wayne, back to back? I'd love to be able to do something like that... but unfortunately I'm not all that great at creative drawing/sketching. My skills are limited to graphic design for the most part so unless I had a wax and wayne to work from I probably wouldn't be able to put something like that together and do it justice.
Aether he/him Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 How about using some of the illustrations from the Stormlight Archive? I would love to see Skyeel, Santhid, Chasmfiend icons etc. on the forum. 1
Argent he/him Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 On a mild aside, I'd be curious to see how clear you can make the Highprinces' glyphs.
Awesomeness Summoned he/him Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 How about using some of the illustrations from the Stormlight Archive? I would love to see Skyeel, Santhid, Chasmfiend icons etc. on the forum. I've thought about doing those. The difficulty is finding a way to downscale them to icon size and still be obvious what they are. I'll probably play around with them at some point and if nothing else I can just make tracings like I did for the whitespine. On a mild aside, I'd be curious to see how clear you can make the Highprinces' glyphs. I wouldn't mind trying that but are those listed somewhere I'm not aware of? I don't remember seeing the highprince glyphs on any of the book artwork. A link would be appreciated.
Aether he/him Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) This post was completely redone. Old one can be seen in the spoiler tags. Well, you get one version of the Kholin sigil on the shield-like symbol with a tower from his chapter in the Way of Kings (I don't think it has ever been verified as such, but his symbols are referred to as a Tower and a Sword). You'll find another version on the illustration-oage for the Bridge Four tattoos. One of the symbols from the illustrations of Shardbearer stances is supposed to be a Highprince symbol as well, though I can't remember which one. The best symbols should be found on the battle maps of the Battle of the Tower (Kholin and Sadeas), and of the battle against the Stormform Parshendi (Kholin, Aladar, Roion, Sebarial). Ok, as far as I can tell, this is all of the ones that have appeared in the books: Kholin: The Kholin glyph(s) appear in three versions throughout the series. The coolest version of the Kholin glyphs can be found on the symbol in Dalinar's chapter sigil. I do not know if it has been specifically stated that these are indeed the Kholin glyphs, but they mark Dalinar's chapters and match the description in-world of a Tower and a Crown. The next one can be seen on the Battle Maps for the Battle of the Tower and for the Battle against the Stormform Parshendi. The last one is a rather strangely twisted one that appears on the illustration page for the Bridge Four tattoos. Sadeas: Along with the Kholin one, it appears on the Battle Map for the Battle of the Tower. Roion: Appears on the Battle Map for the Battle against the Stormform Parshendi. Aladar: Appears on the Battle Map for the Battle against the Stormform Parshendi. Sebarial: Appears on the Battle Map for the Battle against the Stormform Parshendi. There is also one on the Illustration of Shardbearer Battle Stances from Shallan's sketchbook. At least I am fairly certain that the one in the bottom right corner is the symbol for one of the Highprinces. I think it was worked out by someone on the forum, but I can't remember who it was said to be. EDIT: Redid the whole thing with proper sourcing. Edited April 29, 2014 by Aether 2
Argent he/him Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) Link's easy enough, they are right here. The problem is producing something clear enough out of the small and / or blurry glyphpairs. If you do decide to try to mess with them, keep in mind that the ones above the compass are flipped upside-down. Edited April 29, 2014 by Argent 1
Aether he/him Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 Oh yeah, I had forgotten about that one. Darn, I did all this work on my previous post only to be ninja'd with better information
Argent he/him Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 If it makes you feel better, I've spent so many hours trying to decipher those - and other - glyphs, I probably know the location of every glyph in the books.
Aether he/him Posted April 29, 2014 Posted April 29, 2014 (edited) Makes me feel somewhat better, yes. I don't claim to specialise in the illustrations. I prefer the text itself, in which I am prepared to search quite obsessively for whatever takes my fancy (such as references to character's ages and Renarin's box). Edited April 29, 2014 by Aether
Awesomeness Summoned he/him Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 Thank you both kindly. Apparently I'm extremely unobservant. I breezed right over those maps without even noticing the glyphs. They are pretty small and blurred but I'll see what I can do. Having different versions on multiple illustrations will help a little. The one on the fighting stances page I had already done previously so that is one that can be scratched off the list.
Awesomeness Summoned he/him Posted April 29, 2014 Author Posted April 29, 2014 The glyphs from the Narak Battle actually expanded pretty well without losing too much detail so I think these should be pretty close trace approximations of them. Aladar Kholin Roion Sabarial Sadeas The rest of the highprince glyphs on the warcamp artwork are not nearly as clear though so I will attempt those some other time. 8
Aether he/him Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 I am tempted to swap my avatar for that Sebarial one. These are great, Awe!
Awesomeness Summoned he/him Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) Nope, sorry. Once I custom design an avatar for someone they are obligated to keep that as their icon until the end of time. (it was in the fine print when you agreed to use your current one) Looks like you're stuck as an Elsecaller. Edited April 30, 2014 by Awesomeness Summoned 1
Aether he/him Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Oh, rest assured, I will keep mine. Tempted, I said. Not obliged.
Awesomeness Summoned he/him Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 Yea, the Narak ones are the easy ones Tell me about it. Attempting to decipher the glyphs from the warcamp sketch was like trying to interpret rorschach blots... complete guessing on my part. I'll be the first to say these are likely wildly inaccurate but my best idea at what the glyphs actually look like. If this is helpful Argent, great. If this just causes you more confusion in translations, tough luck. On an aside, any guesses on which of these belong to which highprince? I expected to be able to match the glyphs we already know and then determine the rest by the order they are given in the sketch's text but that does not appear to be the case. Some of it seems in order but Sabarial shouldn't be at the end of the list of names so I'm stumped. 3
Argent he/him Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 Yea, if they are in order, it's a weird order. But I expect those will help in figuring out who is whom - since glyphs are not exact science, maybe any information lost in translation (transcription) can be earned back artistically.
PorridgeBrick he/him Posted April 30, 2014 Posted April 30, 2014 (edited) Those glyphs are upside down. You need to flip them. Edit: Wait, actually, you just need to flip the ones above the strange, radially symmetric glyph-thing. Edit Again: Bleh, I'm stupid. You just need to flip the first glyph (Vamah). Edited April 30, 2014 by PorridgeBrick 1
Awesomeness Summoned he/him Posted April 30, 2014 Author Posted April 30, 2014 Actually, only the first one was upside down since it was the only new one from the top of the list. The bottom five are all oriented correctly. I fixed the first one though. Thanks for the tip.
PorridgeBrick he/him Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Well, that out of the way, time for analysis. 1st Glyph: Been translated already, it's Vamah. 2nd Glyph: There's a bit missing here. Right beneath the three circles, there's a mess of unintelligible scribbles. I think they're just Screw You lines, however, so they may not be that essential. 3rd: The squiggly lines on the side definitely need to be connected to the lines on the bottom. Also, I'm pretty sure the topmost stroke of the outer squigglies is unconnected from the rest. 4th: You truncated the outermost lines here. They extend farther, curving inward before turning out and downward. 5th: Hah, this one's crazy. I have no idea here. 1
Awesomeness Summoned he/him Posted May 1, 2014 Author Posted May 1, 2014 Fixed. That look any better? 1
Swimmingly he/him Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 Does Issac know what we've christened his decoration?
Argent he/him Posted May 1, 2014 Posted May 1, 2014 No clue. I did ask him for a higher resolution image of those glyphpairs - going to poke him in a day or two since he wanted to talk it over with Peter.
Awesomeness Summoned he/him Posted May 6, 2014 Author Posted May 6, 2014 Just playing around with coloring some of the fauna artwork from the books and threw a few icons together. Really like how the santhid eye turned out. 14
