He flipped over a card. A ten.

A total of twelve, he mused. A nine or a ten would cause him to go bust, but five out of the remaining eight cards would let him get 20. "Stand," he called.

(The main deck we're drawing from would be endless if digital, or there's normally four cards per number, so you could draw another 2 or 10 from the deck)

Hal watched Doncie pull a second card, getting a 10 to bring the total to 12, before calling "Stand". Hal frowned.

"You sure you want to stand? Standing locks you in at 12, while Fuel on the Fire has already called stand at 19. If you stop now, you've lost for sure. Another round gives you a pretty decent chance at not going 20, and if you land the 20, then you just might win!"

Hal turned over his fourth card, revealing an eight. "Hmm. That takes me to 15. Think I've still got decent odds on landing a twenty with one more pull, so I'm going to end my turn and continue to the next round."

The pit droid then flipped over a +/- six, increasing the total to 19.

The droid leans back in a reclining position, but the smell of smoke lingers over the table.

Can we play a practice round?

I know you prefer it when I explain everything to you in words, but you're perfectly capable of using our senses. I can't know my side cards without you knowing them, and you can't keeps yours secret from me.

    Okay.

If that's acceptable, then we can proceed. We'll play with full forty card main decks, my preferred variant for increasing the odds of hitting pazaak, alternating who goes first after every round.

I'd been figuring it'd be fine to deal yourself into the existing game if you wanted, but if you had, we wouldn't have gotten to experience that piece of RP

1 hour ago, Ookla the Forgotten said:

Doncie sat down and drew a card. A two. Was that good?

"How do you play, exactly?" he asked.

As cards continued to be dealt out, Hal responded to Doncie.

"So hopefully you've got yourself a side deck. If not, just pull 4 random cards from this one." (just use the same list as Wizard or I, as posted earlier).

He watched "Adding Fuel to the Fire" pull a 4 from the deck, and then play a card from their hand to bring their total to 19.

Hal directed Doncie's attention to Fuel to the Fire's cards. "See the goal is to get as close as possible to 20, without going over. Their second card was a four which brought their total to 13, after which they played one of the cards they drew from their side deck to bring the total to 19, which is a pretty good score. It's unlikely the next card from the deck for them would be a one, so they've chosen to stand, designating this their final score. They're hoping that none of the rest of us can land a 19 or 20, so that they win on their 19."

He pointed then to Illvin's cards. "You see his cards? His second draw took him to 13, but he's chosen to bide his time and hope for a 7 or lower in the next round, which is fairly likely.

Hal reached for the deck, dealing himself a third card. Out came a two. "See myself, I've been pretty lucky so far with a few low cards, bringing my current total to seven. I could maybe play a card to get closer to 20 sooner, but I'd rather wait and see what comes out of the deck next."

Indicating his turn was over, he turned back to Illven as he awaited the others to continue playing. "Business rather than pleasure this time. An old friend called in a favour he did me once, so here I am for the next week or so."

[OOC: Hael, damnit, the pazaak theme is already playing in my head :joy: ]

    You're welcome :P

One by one, others sat at the table, pulling out their side decks and dealing them in. As he watched and waited, he could tell it would be an interesting game. Two of the other players had dealt out high starting cards, while another had gotten almost as lucky as his first pull with a 2 on their first card.

"So, who are you anyway?" Illvin asked. Hal considered the dock worker for a few moments. Though a highish starting card, this fellow had instigated the match. He would have to keep an eye on him he figured, to ensure no funny business with the cards.

"The name's Hal. Just landed a short while ago, and found myself with some time to kill before check-in."

Once all the other players interested had dealt themselves in, he leant forward to take a second card.

"It's been a moment since I've set foot on Starsight. What's new?"

He flipped the card. It was a 4. Seems his was to be a slow match for the moment.

"That brings my total to five. Too early to play any cards I think so I'll end my turn."

OOC, I'm going to continue the game without waiting for other posts given I've time now, and won't necessarily have time later when the other potential participants are active. However, the game should run okay with multiple players taking turns at different times, particularly with the early game. Where it does sort of matter is when you've gotten to a total of something like 17, and you're faced with the choice of Ending you Turn and getting another card next turn, gambling on it being a 1-3 (unless you've got negative cards still to play), or Standing, and hoping that no other players land in the 17-20 zone. That's where knowing whether your opponents have already taken a Stand, or have gone bust, etc, help determine whether to take the risk or not. So anyone else who wants to join in, feel free to jump in at any time, and get caught up to the current round, and hopefully we can make the timey-wimeyness of the RP work

He wasn't sure he knew this interloper, but he figured he could do with playing a game of pazaak during his break.

And everyone liked pazaak, didn't they?

Not like those godless souls going on about poker or blackjack, or Lady Fortune forbid, some newfangled invention he'd never the least heard of known as sabacc.

So are we going to play?

Not yet. Pazaak is traditionally a two player game and since those two have already started playing, we have to wait for another interested player or for them to invite me. While we wait, we can practice with the solitaire version.

    4 hours ago, Kasimir said:

"We could play group pazaak," Illvin drawled.

He knew the feeling, lurking around, looking in. Pazaak was pretty addictive after all. Knew a granny down the block who beat him at it hands down each time, over lunch break. He figured he'd learn her tricks one day.

    "DPS rules, even."

'Course, that meant making it up as you go along, with a handy amount of table shuffling and carefully curated exclamations, but he wasn't sure everyone needed to know that.

"Seems we have ourselves here a full Pazaak tournament just waiting to happen. Don't mind some DPS rules myself. Figure we can either do individual matches, or we do one longer games as all 4 of us play each other at the same time. Don't mind what we do, but mind if I start us off?"

Hal got out of his long coat two decks of cards. Shuffling the smaller side deck first, he dealt himself out 4 cards. Then after shuffling the larger main deck, he dealt the first card face up to himself. It was a 1.

    "I end my turn".

    Suggested Way to Play

    Spoiler

So the game's Pazaak, which you can find described here on the Star Wars wiki.

But essentially it works as follows:

    • The goal is to get as close to a score of 20 as possible without going over. The player that gets closest wins the match.
    • Each turn you are dealt a random card from 1-10 (roll a d10)
    • You then have the option of playing one of the 4 random cards selected from your personal side deck.
    • After that, you can "End your Turn" and continue to play in the round, or you can "Stand" which indicates you are happy with your current score and don't wish to risk any further cards.
    • If your score is ever over 20 when you end your turn, you have gone "Bust", and have lost the current match.
    • First player to win 3 matches wins the game.

The side deck is made up of 10 unique cards. The options are essentially:

    • Cards from -6 to +6, excluding a zero card
    • Cards from 1 to 6 that you can choose whether they're + or - when you play them
    • The "2 & 4" or "3 & 6" flip cards - playing the 2&4 flip card turns all +2 and +4 cards on your field to -2 and -4 cards respectively, and visa versa.

I've chosen the following side deck and have use a list randomiser to select 4 cards:

    • -/+1
    • -/+2
    • -/+3
    • -/+4
    • Flip 2&4
    • +3
    • +4
    • -2
    • -5
    • -1

My Randomised Draws from the Side Deck (This is meant to be hidden during the game, but so I don't forget, and/or there's transparency over what legal plays I might make, here it is)

    Good game, that was

Alvron, part of why I kept trying to duel and vote for you even after you were revealed to be a “Jedi” was I was trying to use you as bait to see if the cultists might last minute attempt to bum rush the vote to kill you and save Mat, and reveal themselves. If Mat had actually been Desann I figure that would not have been a bad strategy to try to pull the game off. But Also the mental image of a tiny drunk baby Yoda irrationally picking fights with a Jawa was just too much fun to pass up.

Okay I just had the Worst Gambit Idea™ for this game.

    1. Have one Jedi challenge the other Jedi to a duel.
    2. Whoever wins, pretend to be a normal villager who got incorrectly targeted by the Jedi. Become "cleared" of being a Jedi for life.
    3. Somehow avoid getting lynched by the village, who just saw somebody kill one of the Jedi.
    4. ???
    5. Profit.

Tremble in fear of my brilliant stratagems, and be glad that I did not think of this during the game be especially glad if you're a villager, since this idea is awful

We should be evil/Jedi together, because I started to consider the same sort of thing myself during the game.

  7. Access Complete: I have compiled a summary of all votes placed and retracted across this game, along with some supplementary information.

Exhausted Statement: This may have taken longer than the information may end up being worth.

Addendum: I am posting this now for what value it may give to others, but I have only managed to collate the information so far, and not actually spent time considering the collated data to see what can be gleaned. I will endeavour to do so before end of cycle, and vote accordingly.

    Edit:
Further Addendum: Given no one has posted yet, I'll edit this to say that at this point we've spent enough time waiting around for a Silhouette execution, that clearing up their alignment so that people can all move on is indeed worth it. Now, if a better option comes up, then great, but I'll unlikely to be around to see anything, so help avoid another cycle of vote manipulation, I'll add my vote to Shining Silhouette [Debonair].

  8. 12 hours ago, Ashbringer said:

Any exe this cycle should be based on a suspicion. I’m not voting until I find one. Because as far as I can tell all three trains last cycle were for reasons of pressure or for voting Fifth for pressure.

Actually, no. Can everyone go back to their C2 votes and explain why they did them? Because there were so many without one.

Explanation: I was suspicious of the unnecessary chaos that Xino caused that resulted in Szeth being executed, while not being a fan of the Fifth bandwagon which seemed to have little foundation. Didn't have much reason to shift if afterward when players joined in. The other main option being Silhouette/Debonair which didn't seem to have all that great foundation either.

Paranoid Statement: I would like to see more from Alvron, who while quite the experienced player, has yet to vote or contribute any game related discussion. I would consider voting them, but I feel like there should be more to go on from those contributing more so I'll hold off on joining Madagascar.

Weary Statement: My processing units require some maintenace, so I will return later once I have had an opportunity to recharge.

  10. Assessment: The recent flurry of conversation has adjusted the temperature of the room. Scanning...

Information: I have compiled the following Vote Tally

    Shining Silhouette [Debonair] (0): Matrim's Dice [Tall]{1}, Channelknight Fadran [Redacted]{1}, DrakeMarshall{2}
    The Bookwyrm [Perpetual] (0): Channelknight Fadran [Redacted]{2}

    Haelbarde (1): Xinoehp512{2}*
    Turtle [Poke Vote] (1): DrakeMarshall{3}

Translation: Here is the same tally formatted to just show the current state of voting.

    Vote Tally
Fifth Scholar (2): Ashbringer, The Bookwyrm [Perpetual], Xinoehp512 [Forgotten]*
    Xinoehp512 [Forgotten] (2): Haelbarde, Matrim's Dice [Tall]
Channelknight Fadran [Redacted] (1): Fifth Scholar
    Haelbarde (1): Xinoehp512 [Forgotten]*

Explanation: To all you meatbags who have not been on the receiving end of one of my... bzzt vote tallies, I like to track the movement of votes over time, as indicated by the {#} appended to each vote.

Addendum: I do not see a formal retraction of Xinoehp512 [Forgotten]'s vote from Fifth Scholar before voting for myself. In the time I come from, that would be regarded as their vote remaining of Fifth Scholar as the earliest unretracted vote. However, I know that is not necessarily the standard operating protocol any longer, and would like clarification on that ruling Master. @Kasimir

  11. Embarassed statement: My recharge subsystems experienced faults but now I am here.

Statement: Looking back at last cycle, three things stand out as odd to me.

Commentary: The first is Xino's faulty vote count. I'm unsure how the Madagascar votes got mistaken for Szeth votes, but Xino's panicked counter voting got Szeth killed. Largely because Redacted put their vote down and didn't come back to shift it. Was going to say the second odd thing was fifth's vote but I think looking at it now I appreciate the desire to avoid vote manip, though I still feel off about the vote, nothing the mention of saving Xino but not if saving Madagascar also.

Continuation: The last odd thing is I don't know what Alvron is playing at yet. Outside of Pazaak. Anyone up for a game of Pazaak?

Musing Statement: This unit has much respect for Alvron and is wary that he has yet to involve himself in commentary of the game.

Statement: I'm more inclined to vote for Xino based on last turns interactions. Madagascar held up admirably to the constant two vote pressure while Xino did not, manufacturing drama and chaos to avoid death. I'd be wary of Redacted as an accomplice as part of that, but would vote Xino first.

Musing Statement: Xino's own vote on Fifth this cycle reduces my suspicion on Fifth I think. I'm not sure I understand this cycle's votes on Fifth to be honest...

"Not much of this is salvageable, you know?" he complained. "I'd be surprised if I could get anything working from this rubbish. Maybe if we cannibalized other essential systems for more parts... Kinda feels like a bad idea now that I say it out loud, though."

    Dacken hummed thoughtfully.

"...Maybe we should take apart one of the droids. Say, just for example, the HK exterminator unit."

Threatening Retort: Any motion towards taking my communication subsystems will result in a loss of your own organic communication subsystems.

Conciliatory Statement: I could consider a noninvasive patching in of my systems into the network to facilitate some restoration of local comms.

Warning Statement: My decision to not persue your removal so as to ensure a steady supply of Gizka to maintain my employment can only strain so far...

I love Pazaak.  I had a couple of pazaak decks once and would play it at work with colleagues to relax.  Once they found out it was from Star Wars though, it kinda died off. :(  Still have my decks somewhere.

Intrigued Query: You had actual Pazaak decks? That is very cool.

  12. Irritated Query: Ah, why did you not warn me that it was Ookla season Game Master. I might have delayed my arrival to avoid the hive of meatbags at their most chaotic.

Exasperated Resignation: But I guess I am here now, and the sooner we find the crusty space mystic with less creative diversity the sooner I can get off planet.

Suspicious Contemplation: I'm not sure I trust anyone that actually likes Gizka, but it would seem to me that scrutiny should start on a self proclaimed "Jedi" dropout such as Moff (@Madagascar), for what are "Sith" but "Jedi" dropouts?

12 hours ago, Fifth Scholar said:

A note that due to Thanksgiving and friends and family I will be less active today and tomorrow.

Hello all! Don’t think I’ve played with a few of you before, so this should be a fun first experience. My only point of advice would really be that I am going to treat any public speculation on Jedi identity divorced from shrek discussion and/or claims as an automatic eliminator tell. Even if you’re a villager doing it to misdirect, it really does not pay to be giving the Sith any help with that.

@Haelbarde Query: What is the protocol to fix a communications spike?

Evaluation: It would depend on the form of communications spike.

Explanation: When I was last in active operation, many of the less savoury meatbags of the time made consistent use of handheld data probes known as "Computer Spikes". This were loaded with communication protocols and other data payload that could bypass many common computer systems. Should one of these be in effect, a simple full system reboot should clear any residual protocols still in operation affect the system.

Speculation: It would seem unlikely that a simple disabling of service after bypassing security protocols would be the extent of the sabotage given the simplicity of the solution. I would expect an experienced slicer might use their unauthorised privileged access to overload machinery or delete system essential data that would be hard to recover. Solutions to these rely on the relevant administrators keeping to appropriate redundancy protocols.

Resignation: I do not have high hopes on the levels of redundancy maintained by this planet's administration. After all they are meatbags who have not installed appropriate redundancy for their vital organs.

Turtle sighed, fiddling with his  comm. He could fix a Z-95 Headhunter with busted inertial dampeners, he should be able to fix a broken comm. He were a mechanic, for Force’s sake!

edit: in case anyone was debating claiming, don’t claim. don’t even claim vt, the jedi knights need cover.

Heated Exclamation: Always maintain operational security at all times.

Chiding Explanation: Just because local communication devices have been rendered inoperative does not give license to continue sloppy security protocols in public places. Due to reliable inconsistence in actions of different members of the community, any claimed roles or lack thereof tend to be informative in the aggregate, highlighting individuals with better operational security who tend to be meatbags of interest if they do not normally maintain the same degree of operational security.

in the hypothetical scenario where you played the game, tried to do repairs on HK-47, and didn't happen to spec into the relevant skills, you would potentially get that particular dialogue message a lot

OOC talk is usually just not marked separately anymore, though I have found [OOC: Stuff] and [OOC: Stuff] and [OOC: Stuff] to be acceptable replacements. YMMV. :P

Supplication: Perhaps it would be best if you desisted your efforts for the moment, murde... I mean utility droid that looks oddly intimidating. This seems to be going nowhere.

Irritated Statement: Ah, the meatbag mocks my superior speech patterns. It must be afraid that I might decide on a more direct approach to Gizka culling.

I find it very hard to not come across as rude while RPing as a HK droid. Please let me know if it's a problem in particular and I'll try and adjust.

To be clear, a notable feature of HK units is starting many sentences by vocalising what the sentence is: Query, Statement, Recitation, etc. So that's part of the RP as being a HK droid, but not necessary when addressing him. Galactic Standard is ideal, but your own tongue is fine.

Another notable feature of HK droids is that the original HK-47 model was programmed to refer to people as "Meatbags". So if I use the term, it's just the designation of lifeform. Consider it a form of endearment if you will. It's probably not intentionally meant to be insulting.

  17. Unfortunately can't do either time (woo, timezones...), but if you wanted more item suggestions:

    • The Trellium Spike - LG 26 - Held by Bleeder, to be used by Wax, Bleeder was added to the Odium faction, but then used the promise of being converted to Harmony's faction as a result of Wax using the spike to leak the identity of Odium to Harmony. Odium instantly killed Bleeder in retribution. Lady Sequence tried to make off with it, but was killed. Rysn was the next to try keep it, but it was stolen by Nazh. And when the Children of Adonalsium, lead by Harmony, dared to end the game before Khriss and Nazh were ready for them to do so, Nazh stopped them by spiking themself with the Trellium Spike, becoming the only living member of God's Own Hate (previously lead by Odium), while Khriss incinerated Harmony with all the power available to them.
    • The Diagram - AG 4  /  AN 1 - The infallibable charts plotting all paths to Odium's victory! (See elim doc)
    • Nightmare Cursor Pin - MR 14 - A spectral pin that marked the secret role of Cursor in the pre-game nightmare sequence/social experiment.
    • Brightness Ascendant Banner remains - LG 12 - Edrab Leah, herald to Emperess Kiireon, was survived only by the remains of this banner after the firestorm that errupted in Kae.
    • Rem's Deathnote - QF 15 - Used to kill its holder as a result of a IKYK from someone fakeclaiming the secret role to the people that formed the secret team.
    • Odd collection of 13 sets of shoes - QF 20 - The sneaky Khajit Adarjmei stole a fine collection of shoes from off the feet of all the other 'lucky' guests at Summitmist Manor.
    • The Particularly Cursed One RingMR 38a - So tricksy, the corrupted ran away with the first cycle before anyone knew what was happening.
    • Doctor's Coat & Badge - QF 7 - The discarded canary yellow coat with the masking tape label reading "DrRab", a relic of the one time Abundance of Doctors.
    • Sack of bloodcoated hemalurgy spikes - MR 9 - Inquisitor Grimm spent the game killing steel ministry and skaa indescriminently for their allomantic powers.
    • The Lifeless Command Phrase to 4 Unused Lifeless - LG 28 - Four lifeless were accumulated to produce a massive suprise vote spring from long dead players, only the commands were thought to be lost before they could be used when the Lifeless Commander died.

I've run out of energy to do all these properly, but speaking to Burnt, she suggested some of the following:

    • Burnt Spaghetti's Grandbow of Seeking in LG20
    • Beardnuts with maple syrup and glitter - MR 7 - Portal in the sky appeared and Burnt and Bort pranked Wilson from the middle of a past game.
    • Mercenary Cupcakes LG33
    • LG65 burnt down house
    • Corruption LG21 - Burnt holding broken cultivation, along with Ruin and Dominion.
