  1. I'm talking about the posters reaction, not Dalinar's - even though, you know, I actually don't know. Pretty much everyone in-universe agreed that Sadwas had to go, and I imagine Dalinar being a the same time kind of disappointed and still somewhat relieved that Sadeas is finally out of the game - and maybe even ashamed of it. He'd be sad that Adolin had to take on such as a burden more than angry IMO - he's an honorable guy, but still the product of a bloodthirsty society, and old habits (and mindsets) die hard even for Radiants.
  2. Mah, I don't quite see most posters' problem with Sadeas' s death. Sure, it'll mess with Adolin's mind and most people will assume the Kholins did it, but he got away with it and was IMO the morally, if not ethically, right thing to do. Laws in the kingdom are basically a joke, so I'm not even going there - but still, I dont think it's a huge deal.
  3. I was going to post this in the Shallan thread; but fits better in here (reply to the OP's post there) Shallan is nowhere close to her full potential so we cant know how similar to Navani she'll become, but Adolin *is* compared pretty often to Gavilar in WoK, albeit inderectly, pretty much every time that Dalinar thinks something among the lines of 'I know how Renarin must feel since I too was the younger brother of a charismatic leader. This happens at least twixe, I think, with Dalinar eventually adding that is good that Renarin isnt as jealous of his brother as he himself was.
  4. On my mobile so I can't quote properly Agree with you about the wife but.. why the heck should Elhokar step down? Yes, he's a mediocre king and weak human being. Yes, he needs to learn how to be a leader. How would step down help him in this? Similarly, Dalinar really needs to learn how not to be a well meaning tyrant and let people decide for themselves, and part of the reason Elhokar is this way is how overshadowed he feels by the rest of his family. King Dalinar would be a disaster, not to mention cheap storytelling - not all main fantasy characters have got to be kings, they can live just fine as kings' uncles. Also, Kaladin would join me in being horrified at the idea of Crown Prince Adolin
  5. What about Amaram, or Roshone? It's fairly simple actually IMO. Datkeyes only have one name, while lihteyes sons and heir are referred to with their first name - only family heads by their last. This is true in many fantasy and even in history. The only important lord referred to by his first name is Dalinar, likely because Kholin is also the name of the king, and because most POVs are on familiar enough terms with him. So... nothing out of the ordinary IMO.
  6. So, I'm generally... underwhelmed by the 'I love love triangles' angle. It's a weak excuse, folks, and lazy. It's like saying that you'll never try up fish meals in a restaurant because you hward it's a food that usually tastes disgusting because it's not done well. Can't knock it until you tried it, people; and I have a better opinion of Brandon's writing than that. If anything, he never lets romance interfere with the plot, so it will never be a major story point anyway - those are called soap operas, and it's a whole other kind of storytelling. And then, is character development and conflict, with amazing growt potential.. how can you not *look forward* to it? Bring it on, love triangle or square or dodecagon, as long as it has interesting people in it.
  7. ....and now I'm totally picturing this pairing. It's.. inteesting, to aay the least ETA Well, she's mid-dahn (that's how you spell it, right?) according to Kal in WoR - same as Shallan. Which raised the question during my reread of WoK of how Kal's parents could ever hope to marry them, since the difference was so great, unless Laral's family was very poor. Does anyone know? But she's had Sadeas' s dowry now and is the wife / hopefully-soon-to-be-wife of Amaram's cousin so maybe that gave her a status upgrade. Nothing against Laral as a Radiant per se, but Id rather everyone not to get superpowers.
  8. No please no. One of the thing I disliked the most in WoT was how everyone ends up with a kingdom in the end, for no real plot-driven reason whatsoever except that it sounded cool. It's terribly unrealistic and I dont see the need for it. Edited.
  9. Agree with pretty much everything you said. Also My money's on Jasnah ('you thought she was safe, didnt you?') For the same reason people expected her to die in this book - either she or Dalinar, finally offed by Mr. T and yet another step on the way of Adolin's total deconstruction. Cause, y'know there are too many Kholins still alive. Im hoping for Renarin, since I most definitely dont share the love most folks here seem to have for him, but IMO is not likely.
  10. ^ Interesting. But why would he *see* them then? It makes sense he'd been watched... but he takes notice of the spren watching him, which IMO indicates latent KR abilities
  11. After rereading WoK knowing what we now know about Roshone, I have an incredibly soft spot for Laral. Her story is incredibly sad, and just how Shallan's might have been, had things gone differently. She was so vibrant and full of life in that flashback chapter, and then ended up shut in a manor with (and likely married to) Roshone, which... ugh. So, I definitely hope we'll see her next book, and that she'll get an happy ending. I'm quite alright with the Laral/Kaladin ship, but I've been toying with my new favorite - Laral/Adolin. Just imagine it; they'd fit together even better than him and Shallan, and it's a nice sideship to the increasingly-likely Shalladin.
  12. Favorite character... alright, here we go. First place is got to be Kaladin. He's whiny and angsty and annoying pretty much all the time, and his arc is so well written and believable I'm awed. Also, he's pretty awesome whenever he forgets to be depressed, and now I can't wait for his arc in SU. Second his Shallan, and second only because no one can top Kal. I adored everything about her, her flashbacks, character development and adventures in espionage; her laugh-not-to-cry attitude and interaction with both her potential love interest. It was great. third place is shared by both Adolin and Elhokar - the first one because, as entertaining as his POVs were, he pretty much remains static if not for that last chapter; and Elhokar for the potential, since I loved that dialogue with Kaladin, the incredible depth it shows and all that might entail for future books.
  13. Count me firmly in the 'Elhokar becomes a Radiant' field. I simply loved him in WoR, for all that he made me scream in frustration at times - kinda like Kaladin actually. That scene with Kaladin was simply amazingly powerful, revealing a depth of character that made Elhokar jump up in my personal character list, landing firmly in the top 5. Yes, he's childlish, annoying and self-pitying, but he has so much potential for character growth that makes me love him anyway, and I am definitely rooting for him to become a KR so that his arc will get even more awesome
  14. IMO the ones in the camp thought that it was more a political scheme than anything else, especially as Amaram showed no real surgebinding ability, and the rest of the ardents were too busy with the riots to care what happened on the Plans. now, I'm *really* curious to see what will happen if ever Kaladin makes it to the capital...
  15. This is my new favorite idea. As for the topic, IMO Adolin could or could not become a Radiant, it goes both ways. The only reason why he maybe won't is a purely plot-related one - his father, cousin, brother and maybe even other cousin are all Radiants already, and we, story wise, don't need him to be one too. BUT I like Adolin a lot and could see him in the role just fine (plus more bromance with Kaladin, please!). If he doesn't become one, it definitely won't be because of his killing Sadeas. There's nothing unforgivable about that. Morally wrong, maybe, depending on how one sees it, but nothing that will be an obstacle to him becoming a KR.
  16. But she *still* didn't tell her. The point here is trust, how Shallan didn't willing told Jasnah/Adolin about her father's death It doesn't matter if Jasnah knows she killed her father, the point still remains that there was only one person she trusted enough to tell the truth, and that person is Kaladin.
  17. Probably people were too shocked by what happened after to spend too much time re-thinking the duel. Also, it was probably something of an uncomfortable topic, with him being darkeyed and everything and yet in the end winning the duel, so probably it was in everyone's best interests to simply ignore it - especially considering that Kaladin had fallen out of favor with the king in such a spectacular way in front of everyone. Most lighteyes likely figured it wasn't worth to risk complications by talking about him
  18. I am now picturing Adolin and Shallan as Roshar's own Brangelina
  19. Considering this is it just me, or is "Brandon possibly hinting about the possibility of syl becoming shard plate" potentially very... interesting? And also weird, but mostly interesting. ETA: also, forgive me the n00b question, but are the last five books part of the current story arc, then? I've only been lurking around here for a couple of weeks, but it seemed like lots of posters just assume that the last five book will be set a long time after the first five -- long enough to require completely different characters. But if Renarin has been confirmed to be the focus of one book, is the time-skip just a theory?
  20. Wasn't Szeth = third book; Eshonai = fourth and Dalinar = fifth? I might be wrong though, I only read it somewhere at Tor.com
  21. Thanks a lot @Limelleth I actually learn about the Cosmere after looking up the Mistborn page on TvTropes, but that guide you linked looks wonderful so I'm defintely going to look at it right now. (As for your question, I've read Mistborn, Elantris, The Alloy of Law, Warbreaker and WoK. I'm flying over to the UK in a couple of days and planned on picking up Words of Radiance there, but I don't know if I can actually resist all the delicious spoilers until Sunday.. it's killing me!)
  22. So, umh. Hi everybody. I suck at these things, just in case it wasn't clear yet. I'm Elena, because all the cool usernames were taken; I'm a uni student living in Italy with a love for rock music and a strange habit of reading Brandon's book for the first time during boring airplane flights. I don't know what is it about release dates coinciding with my vacations, but it's awesome because I never get bored Aaaaand, this about covers it; see y'all around. Cheers!
