Personally i cant imagine a "casual reader" picking up a 387k word count epic fantasy novel, no storming way that happens often enough for this to be an issue. And as you said a "casual" reader of SA would not even notice the references anyway. And I'm sure when Sanderson begins to introduce the Cosmere concept in SA directly he will do so in a way that still does not directly require you to read his previous novels to follow the main storyline. Remember the main characters are completely dumb to the idea of the Cosmere so the reader will be introduced to its secretes within the context as the SA characters.

Wow, this is a truly astonishing thing to hear that some readers are actually annoyed at the Cosmere tie-ins and eastereggs?! That just feels so wrong. Personally its my absolute favorite aspect of the books, of all his books really. The fact that they are all part of a much much bigger picture, makes the whole thing feel more alive and exciting. I hope we get more and more tie-ins and i pray that Sanderson becomes more bold in bringing the Cosmere books together as the Stormlight archive grows.

Power-blind? [minor Secret History and Shadows for Silence spoilers]
menacekop replied to Senor Feesh's topic in Mistborn
Hmmm, what that person asks about cognitive shadows going to the forest of hell does he mean going to the cognitive realm side of the Forest of Hell or the Physical side? Im curious to know if Shades in the forest are cognitive shadows that have some how made it to the physical realm or does something about the cognitive realm at the forest cause cognitive shadows to "bleed" through to the physical realm from the cognitive. I hope all that made sense. -
Power-blind? [minor Secret History and Shadows for Silence spoilers]

So are shades on Threnody cognitive shadows that exist in the physical realm? If so do we have any idea how they got into the physical realm? -
Ya, it is still a long time in which I'm sure LOTS has happened. You know what I would love to see is a secret histories book based around Hoids perspective and all the things he has been doing in the back ground of all these books.
-
Doesn't Hoid also have the ability to move through time (but only forward)? I thought we had WoB or book reference on this somewhere. If that is the case then 300 years may have past for the world but probably not quite that many for Hoid himself.

You have no idea.

Why did the listeners need to contend gemhearts?
menacekop replied to king of nowhere's topic in Stormlight Archive
There could be a reason for this. Perhaps food? The War seems to have created a pretty rich consentration of corpses for the chasmfiends to feed on. Perhaps they pupate in the area because its just happens to be where they can get the most/best grub in all of the chasms. Hell I know the first thing i want to do after filling my belly is pupate. -

Im the complete opposite, I cant seem to keep track of anything especially with Robert Jordans WoT. So many names and places, makes my head spin. -
I agree, the problem is it would require a Blockbuster Hollywood level budget, which TV shows just dont get. I think this would work much better as an anime, especially if you can get the team that did A:TLAB/Korra to do it. Studio Ghibli would be even better but i can imagine getting a Japanese animation studio onboard would be difficult.

I see. Looks like they are free now, hopefully that can free him up to use copper mind, I would really love to have these available for my cosmere reading. -
Saw this thing on reddit and decided to try it out for my WoT read and holy hell is it nice, makes keeping track of who is who and what is what soooo much eaiser. Naturally my next thought was how the Cosmere books would benefit from this, sadly there are no sanderson fictionaries available. Site says they are created from wikis and they take requests so i submitted one but im sure if more and more of us do they will be more likely to make them. Anyway check them out and if you feel the same request some Cosmere love!

Scroll down on the page and there are two links. The first is rather short but the second link gives a different begining and 6 chapters of the book. Keep in mind this is unpublished and unfinished, therefor can not be considered canon and is subject to change. enjoy! http://coppermind.net/wiki/Sample_material

I dunno, if you think about the lore behind the Tranquiline Halls it actually kind of does make sense. The humans live in peace in a place called the Tranquiline halls and are suddenly attacked and cast out by an evil army of what they now call voidbringers which are widely credited for being Odium’s minions. The fact that their lore says they have to now fight to reclaim this land suggest that it is still currently occupied by the evil that took it over, which Braize is currently occupied by Odium. Combine that with the fact that humans are obviously non-native to the planet Roshar means that had to come physically from somewhere else. Actually the more i think about it the more likely this seems, it’s also a typical Sanderson move to hide something right under your nose.

wow that is one hell of a catch! These kinds of things are rarely done on accident and Felt is a unique enough of a name it seems unlikely it would be used twice by accident either. If it is the same guy he could be an informant working for a world hopper like Hoid or Mraize. He sounds like he may be in a similar character to Nazh the guy who retrieved Shallans things from the bottom of the ocean and was sketching bridge 4 and making maps for someone on Scadrial. Interesting find.

What exactly is Nightblood? (WoR spoilers inside)
menacekop replied to menacekop's topic in Cosmere Discussion
I read it in the compilation thread here... http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6605-words-of-brandon-compiled/ Which links to this thread... http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6587-san-francisco-signing-audio/page-2 (page 2 is where they lay out the Q&A) -
My theory; he is an awakened shardblade. AKA a "dead" spren that has been given a lot of breath, perhaps a devine breath or maybe even more... The only proof i can offer is from a Q&A with Sanderson from the San Francisco book signing.... Q: If Nightblood were on Roshar would he be a Shardblade? A: Yes, they are exactly the same thing. He is a Shardblade that is twisted and is a lot more powerful than normal. Discuss? Already been postulated?
-
Are you sure about that second statment? Brandon has said that ALL shards had been on Roshar in some way, which i think the current popular belief is that Adonalsium was there at one point. With that said I also think i have read what you are refering to about 3 shards CURRENTLY being on Roshar, but we need to know exactly how the question and answer were phrased because if he meant Roshar the planet (not greater roshar the system) then that puts only 2 known shards on Roshar with odium being on Braise. Ill admit though im mostly questioning your reply because I really like the idea of a 4th hidden shard being in the mix!
-
This is less of a theory and more of a thought exercise that has been rattling around my head the past couple weeks. It may not even be interesting to you guys and gals but i thought i would throw it out there and see if anyone bites... How does a shard world or the magic on a shard world or the magic’s influence on a shard world change after a shard has died? More specifically is there a standard way a shards influence on a world changes when a shard dies or shatters? Or is it different for each shard and the circumstances surrounding their death? My thought comes from trying to figure out how things on Nalthis would change if Endowment shattered, what would happen to the people and their breaths? Would awakening still work? Would the heightenings still work the same? I also wonder what things were like on Scadrial before Preservation died and Ati trapped, were there always alomancers that could burn metal and feruchemists that could store/tap metal minds? Were the powers stronger/weaker? Also is there an inherent difference between a shard dying (in Preservations case) and a shard being forcibly split by Odium (like Devotion or Honor)? I would love to read a book or series that covers a shard world before, during, and after their shard split.

Thanks for the reply sir! Like many I have been lurking here for a while, but with the excitement for WoR I just could not help but begin to participate There isn’t nearly enough evidence to support my theory but its fun to postulate as my buddies and I go off on wild speculation tangents, this is one that I liked the best so I thought I would throw it out there. In reply I would like to say that my theory does not rely on all of the heralds being from different cosmere planets perhaps just a few. Also one reason they don’t go back could be because they don’t know how to go back, its possible they were chosen for the job and brought here w/o knowledge of how they themselves can world hop. Anyway all speculation at this point and it just amazes me how Sanderson is capable of weaving such a rich and deep universe that I can spend days and weeks speculating so many different outcomes.

Anyone ever postulate a theory on the origin of the Heralds? I know Brandon has confirmed that they are all human, has he confirmed whether or not they are all from Roshar? I am still formulating a theory among work friends about the overall conflict between Honor and Odium, part of the theory suggests that the scope of their conflict and the regions it takes place in are larger than Roshar. I feel that the influence is felt throughout the cosmere in the spirit realm and the cognitive realm, I also feel that the Tranquiline Halls are not unique to Roshar or the Rosharian people. This leads to a more complex theory on the nature of the oath pact possibly being a plan hatched by Honor to trap Odium on Roshar thereby limiting the destruction of their conflict. That said, if the scope of this conflict is indeed that large it wouldn't be a streatch to suggest that the Heralds are from all over the cosmere. What sparked my theory was reading up on the heralds and their essences when I read Nalan with the essence of vapor and the body focus of exhalation I obviously thought Nalthis, breaths, and awakening. Is it possible that when the conflict between Honor and Odium began, or when the oath pact was formed, that champions from multiple shard worlds were chosen by the residing shards to uphold the oath pact?
