Maybe the light red eyes is a recessive type "gene". If the Dustbringers had children with someone who had another eye color, would that, in essence, take over? Seems somewhat tenuous, I admit, but it's the best I've got at the moment.

This is pretty much echoed in WoR when Hoid is talking to Dalinar. I don't think Kelsier would've taken that statement as well as Dalinar did.

Audiobook fans: Thoughts on Narration Impacting the Story
Terisen replied to Tien'sPetLurg's topic in General Discussion
Kate Reading and Michael Kramer are the best in the business. Sanderson specifically requested them to read the Stormlight Archive books. They generally do a fantastic job, but I agree with your assessment of Pattern. It was a little much. Same with the accents from the Thaylen characters. I had no idea they were actually French! I listened to the entire Wheel of Time series and that definitely helped with pronunciation of character names like Nynaeve. I had a roommate who also loved the series, but read all the books. He would just make a mess of that pronunciation and it would drive me up a wall. But I understood how he couldn't say it. I mean, look at that name! I don't know that I've come across a "bad" narration yet for any audiobook I've listened to. Most of the time, it just takes a little while and my brain adjusts to the narrator's voice.- 15 replies

The altitude change doesn't present that immediate danger. But all those people that went from the Shattered Plains to Urithiru will probably have a bad case of altitude sickness in the coming days. Happened to me when I went from sea level to 14,000+ feet above sea level while living in Peru. Not something you really want to experience.

Well, a feruchemist with a coppermind is already acting as a computer of sorts. The nature of pulling something from the coppermind, potentially changing it (or just putting it back) and then reading something else is a type of Turing Machine. I'm digging back into my Computer Science course work from years ago, but Turing Machines are theoretical computers (basically any modern computer is a Turing Machine at heart). You read a symbol from a theoretical tape, the machine processes that symbol and the either writes something new to the slot on the tape or writes nothing. The machine then moves the tape left or right and the process continues until the problem is solved. The problem with a feruchemical computer that acts outside the feruchemist is how the information in the coppermind would be extacted and reinserted. You'd need some sort of investitute, I'd think. I wonder if you could do something with Awakening from Warbreaker to do that...

I wonder if the same situation would arise if a radiant bonded another spren from a different order. Say they break their oaths in one order and then bond a spren from another order. Would their eye color change? That seems to be sort of what is happening with Shallan. I don't even know if my scenario is even valid though.

I was under the same impression as Chrono. Honorspren would be the highest rank of spren associate with Honor because, well, honor. I can't quite figure out how lies and truth work with Cultivation though.

This is exactly what I love about music in general and why I can't understand people who get into arguments over which band or style of music is better. There's so much music out there that you can find exactly what you like. For instance, Ketek prefers Den Adel's voice over Simon's. Great! I prefer Simon's voice. We can both enjoy what we like. That said, metal is obviously the best genre. And, Ketek, I TOTALLY agree about red heads.

I'm pretty sure Amaram is out. Dalinar makes the most logical sense, purely from a societal standpoint. As highprince, everyone else that is currently in the Knights Radiant (Renarin, Shallan, Jasnah, Kaladin) is essentially under the rule of Dalinar anyway. It would create a massive conflict of interest if, say, Renarin (or Adolin, if he becomes a knight) were to lead the Radiants and yet were under the jurisdiction of Dalinar when it came to social matters in Alethkar. Not saying it can't happen, but the characters already have this built in "bias" to defer to Dalinar. Also, as has been noted here, Dalinar is a Bondsmith, which seemed to have some position of power within the pre-Recreance Radiants anyway. Yes, Dalinar is something of a tyrant, but at least he's working towards the right goal.

Where does roshar get it's horses
Terisen replied to High prince of geeks's topic in Stormlight Archive
I actually don't think grazing is a problem. The grass just grows in rockbuds and such that protect it from highstorms. There's a scene in WoR where we see how the horses actually using a method to graze on this type of grass. Space isn't that big of an issue either, I would think as you would soulcast a shelter for highstorms for the horses, much like is done with barracks for soldiers. I would think it would still be far more cost effective than buying from Shinovar. I think that RShara has the right of it. It's highly possible that the Shin aren't selling horses that would be able to breed (be they all mares or geldings). They'd corner the market and guarantee repeat business. -
Lego album of Words of Radiance part 1 [spoilers]
Terisen replied to fastlindyrick's topic in Stormlight Archive
Let's see...feedback.... The Santhid is awesome. Pattern in Shadesmar is genius. The little details in the large scenes is spectacular. How's that? Well done. So much win in these pictures. -
I think Tempus has the right of it. The pulses themselves may be something that exist across all realms. I'll need to think on this a bit more and comment further one I have a bit more energy (tired after the long weekend).
-
I think it may be entirely possible to expand out to all three realms for the rhythms. We don't know much about the spiritual, so it's hard to give any sort of concrete examples of the rhythms past what you just wrote. I don't think expanding to all three realms greater alters too much.

Awakening does look to be a bit of the screwball here. I agree that it's not the lightwaves that are consumed. Rather, the fact that the object changes color to a dull gray is more a function of the object itself having its soul consumed/severed/whatever you want to call it. Awakeners only perceive this effect as a draining of the color when, in fact, something more fundamental occurs. Continuing to think along these lines, I think it's possible that the same sort of thing actually happens when metal is burned in Allomancy. The metal has its soul consumed/severed, but we never see it since, well, the metal is inside the Allomancer. This fundamentally changes the metal so that it no longer would cause metal poisoning and just passes through the system without more incident. Stormlight as well could maybe be thought of this way, since it's internal as well. Haven't thought about this in terms of the Dor yet. Just chucking things out there. Ha, funny that you brought that up. I started re-reading Warbreaker last night and noticed that Vasher describes the breath coming out as a mist. I thought "Nah, that's too flimsy. There's no connection." Guess I was wrong! The mists definitely appear to be fundamental in some manner, then.

I just reread my post and realized that I didn't say what I intended. It was more along the lines of the WoB that you referenced. I was thinking of when Kaladin was in the Hightstorm/Everstorm and had a constant supply for surgebinding. Much like the mist had components that could be burned, the highstorms had components that could be...bound (? don't know the good term for that). I would say that the mists/highstorms definitely compensate for the reactant. Seems the most sensible option to me. Bypassing seems too at odds with most everything else. I wonder what would happen if a Surgebinder such as a Windrunner were to be in the Everstorm and tried to surgebind. We've only seen it happen in a mix of highstorm/everstorm. Would the Surgebinder have the negative reaction we've discussed or would there just be no Stormlight whatsoever?
-
A good find for sure! As noted above, that sort of trait does tend to be the hero trope in most stories. I'm pretty sure we could start listing other characters from the Cosmere and trying to slot them into the Knights Radiant orders (hey, maybe we should!) because the orders themselves were intended to embody principles and traits that would encompass multiple people. Some more than others.

[GAME] If you were a Mistborn in real life...
Terisen replied to Steel's topic in Forum Games & Random Stuff
Mistborn. Lots of good things from that. Being able to dampen people's emotions in a heated meeting (feel very uncomfortable in those). And who wouldn't want to be able to pull your phone to your hand from across the room? But I'd just take being able to steelpush travel whereever I want and skip the traffic. -
I'd say that, similar to what you mentioned with Vin and Raoden experiencing the same symptoms without a reactant, the same thing probably occurs with Stormlight. Although we've not seen anyone try to Surgebind without Stormlight, we've seen Shallan try to soulcast with very little Stormlight. Jasnah had to come into Shadesmar to rescue her. Additionally, Kaladin feels completely drained when he loses the Stormlight after trying to fight Adolin. And this was without trying to surgebind with that Stormlight. He likely would have had an experience like Vin or Raoden due to the nature of trying to perform an action without all the proper pieces of the formula. The mists do present a problem. I would guess that they comprise the same fundamental materials that make up the metals that allow metals to be burned. Sort of a gas form of each individual metal, so that you burn only the specific particles in the mist that you intend to burn. It sort of works like Stomlight. Actually, I kinda like that last idea...

This may just be a case of arguing semantics, but I think that "catalyst" is the wrong term because the reaction could still occur without the catalyst. The catalyst speeds up the process. To the dictionary! I don't think that you could perform Allomancy under any conditions if you didn't have the metal (or mist) to burn. That's why I went with reagent or reactant (I'm still inclined towards reagent, Tempus, but I could be swayed). Again, to the dictionary! Since things like color and metal are both consumed and necessary to the action, I feel that "catalyst" isn't quite the correct term, despite being listed in the Ars Arcanum. But, again, this may be all semantics at this point!

The Everstorm as a metrological disaster
Terisen replied to kari-no-sugata's topic in Stormlight Archive
Shinovar is going to be absolutely wrecked. The flora and fauna are not equipped to deal with constant storms of that ferocity. That could have an effect on something like horses being bred. Horses will now become even rarer, meaning no more cavalry potentially. -
That's a good question. I'd not considered that before. She came on by herself, so it wasn't like she could see the dowser used on someone else before she was tested. And you'd assume that she WAS tested when she came on and wasn't allowed to handle the dowser before she was tested. Perhaps her illusions are able to construct an image that the viewer fills in with their consciousness? Like in Inception how the dreamer fills in the details. I know that's flimsy, but it's the best I've got right now.

That's a very good way of putting it. They're probably my favorite symphonic metal band because of the technical ability of the instrumentalists and her vocal ability.

You may be able to call the "consumed" substance a reactant instead of fuel. Or, more generally, a reagent, since a reactant is consumed upon the reaction. This whole concept appears to be a bit of magical chemistry and the terms seem to fit fairly well. You have items, such as metal, that are reactants with Investiture. The Allomancer adds Investiture to the metal, the metal is consumed and an effect, like added strength, is produced. There may be side effects produced or not, but the process remains the same. Therefore, we'd get a breakdown of the different magic systems into a sort of chemical reaction chart. Just for the sake of putting this down : Allomancy: Investiture (Fuel) + Metal (Reagent) = Strength, Senses, etc. (Synthesis) Awakening: Investiture (Fuel) + Color (Reagent) = Awakening (Synthesis) Surgebinding: Investiture (Fuel) + Stormlight (Reagent) = Gravitation, Soulcasting, etc + Heat (Replacement) This is by no means a complete list (maybe I'll take a stab at it sometime), but just to illustrate the point. Not all magic systems will produce the same side effects, Maybe they produce none at all. Like basic chemistry, the seems to be different classes of reactions based on the reagent. Note: I'm no chemist. It's been a long while since I took chemistry, so an actual chemist may correct me here.

The most devastating shard weapons
Terisen replied to Fifth of Daybreak's topic in Stormlight Archive
Soooo....Samus Aran if she were a Radiant then? -
Sure. For one, that's how Conflux powered the city. He'd gift to the power cells which were used to power other things like the gun that was used.
