  1. I can verify that Wilson had said pregame that she was going to adopt a more care free playstyle. While RPing is most definitely a valid style of playing these games, there's still some basic expectations placed on RPers. They still have to participate in the game, whether by breaking character, or in character, like Wilson did when voting. (Metacognition, who started off these games here, had already been playing them on a different site, where they *exclusively* RP'd. If it wasn't something their character knew, they couldn't use that information.) You can't join a game and expect to only RP. These are foremost mafia games. If you want to just RP, there's the entire rest of the RP subforum. We are part of the RP subforum, sure, and so RP is a core part, but these are first games about voting, lying, manipulation, and killing. And for all those people who find it hard to know how to contribute, I disagree that just because you're new, or aren't good at strategising, that there's nothing for you to contribute. The problem is that as a community, we aren't helping people to learn how to do that. More experienced players don't drop pointers, or theirs no article we can point you at for suggestions, or often the game is so complex that it's no longer relevant... :/
  2. I will point out that Polking's first game was QF10 and he's been in 6 games to date (8 if you include the two running now). So not exactly 'new'. People that have contributed something: Jondesu, Elenion, Elbereth, Mark IV, The Young Bard, Doc, Wonko, Unodus, Nyali, Clanky, Orlok. Yes, I know more people have posted than that, but those seem to be the people who've properly tried to help out. Of those, El hasn't contributed all that much at all, and I feel the Elenion, and Clanky haven't really either (with Elenion, he's asking other people questions, but not adding much necessarily himself). Probably the key contributors are Jondesu, Mark, Bard, Wonko, I'd say. Doc's had some good stuff too. So far, the only person I'd be truly willing to say is village would be Jondesu, everyone else has been fairly noncommital. Re: Phat - he can often tend towards inactivity. Not sure if I'd be willing to D1 lynch him for it, but it'd be nice if turned up... It gives us a better chance at getting more useful items, and should, at most, only net us 2 more eliminators. We need to find something to kill the Heart, which I thought was possible for us to do without having found it. The more we explore, the more likely we are to find that, for once we can actually get to the Heart.
  3. Oops, missed this post, probably because of being the last on the page. By all means, continue to be paranoid. That's a healthy attitude, particularly because of the possibility of conversion. You had said you were going to elaborate. I assume I addressed what you were going to say?
  4. I don't think that the day 1 discussion is ever about trying to get one eliminator to defend another. It's about learning how players view the game, because the eliminators have a different perspective, which starts as soon as they are eliminators. It's about making it harder for the eliminators to hide and not contribute opinions. It's about providing information that can be analysed once a player has died. Edit: We poke and apply pressure to do all that. I don't think there's any excuse for there not to be discussion this cycle. Day 1 isn't about reacting to discussion. It's about making it, and that's something everyone has to contribute to.
  5. @luckat I was going to respond to this post in the LG27 thread, but here is probably the best place to put it. I think you'll be missed if you were to stop playing completely. And I think that to fix the problems you talked about, we need GM's who try and address those issues in the game they play, and we need players dedicated to actually playing the games properly. But I totally agree with what you were saying. It's why I've opted to run 2 games with basic rules now, and why I imposed an inactivity filter last game. (This game I've just put a warning. I don't know if that's what scared people off, or if it's the fact that the LG just started). But I do think we need to work out how to deal with inactives. Providing motivation is obviously the ideal, but I think inactivity should at least be specifically addressed in any games that a run - a GM should have some strategy to deal with it, whether reserving pinch hitters, implementing an inactivity filter, or something else. Or there be a way of restricting players who habitually go inactive from playing some games, or something. Re: Complex games. I'm not sure about the best way to deal with that is. They can in theory be done well, but historically have tended to be the more broken games. Possibly GM's should be restricted from running complex games until they've run a simpler game (standard elimination, with a few roles) first, before slowly moving into more complex things. I also think that GM's have to pay more attention to what SE is about at its core - it's about deception and perception, trying to catch the hidden eliminators. As games get more complex, that focus seems to drift, and the problem with role madness is that everyone has something that they can do which could help them win, without posting in thread. Which ends up with nothing happening in thread, and then people going inactive because all they've ever done is role stuff, and when they can't do anything useful, they don't know what to do. I don't know. I feel like maybe the mods should moderate what sort of games are played, like make sure that there aren't too many crazy complex games at the same time, that there are always more standard games, or something. Edit: While I think of it, a relevant idea would be that of 'breaktank' games - 3-4 day games with 24 hour cycles, designed to run complex games through their motions so that problems can be found in an environment where it doesn't matter.
  6. Cycle One – Trailbreak 5 days in and only one death. This was about as good as one could hope for when trying to move a large group of people through the jungles of the Pantheon. Even with a pair of trackers who had agreed to lead them, death was to be expected. What worried Idoya was that it wasn't the jungles of Unani that had killed the porter two days ago. It'd been a knife from the Homelands. With another member of their troupe missing, presumed dead, was this an accident, or was it something more sinster? “If he’s not here, then he’s already as good as dead.” First of the Noon called out. He smiled. “The lost don’t live long in this jungle. Keep up, and maybe you won’t join him.” After one of the porters had died to a knife, the next few days had been tense. No one trusted anyone. But after two more days of travel, no further incident had lead people to relax. A little anyway. And then on of the scientists disappeared. He’d be dragging his feet at the back of the troop for some time, but was now nowhere to be seen. Having given a group a brief respite, Second of the Twilight beckoned. “Time to go. We have a way to go yet before we can camp safely. You really don’t want to be here still when the light is gone.” With that, he turned, disappearing into the jungle. Cycle ends in around 48 hours. PM's are going out now. Edit: All PM's have been sent out. Let me know if I've missed someone or something... Player List:
  7. @Mark IV @The Young Bard See, I don't think of me doing poke votes to try and stimulate as being different to normal. Although, it's possible that perception is due to the fact that more recently, I've had important roles that have made me want to draw as little attention as possible. As in, since AG2, QF15 has been the only game I've been regular village in - I've been a Spiked, Skindancer, a Seeker, Padan Fain (conversion faction), Autonomy (neutral), and Khriss (secret faction). Village!Hael has been hibernating... :/ Edit: Ooops. Elbereth.
  8. @Jondesu I can probably give you examples where I've done precisely that. And I'm essentially operating as Night 0 was essentially meaningless, and this is the start of the game. Night 0, everyone was a regular explorer, I believe (I don't think there's any reason to believe otherwise), and everyone explored. Now we've got some variation. We've got 2 eliminators, and for all we've had people say they essentially said nothing, I'm sure there are people who did actually find a useful item, but want to keep that info to themselves (or just haven't logged on). Basically, the position we are now is where we normally are on the first turn of the game, so I'm treating it as such. So anyone who hasn't posted this cycle is fair game, and El hadn't posted. The reason why I picked El out of all the people who hadn't posted is I know that she's around, and I respect her opinions/views.
  9. Also, just a reminder that you cannot copy and paste stuff from PMs into thread (or into other PMs, unless it's into the GM/role PM) - so when reporting stuff you've found, it's got to be in your own words.
  10. Eh, sorry for not posting much last night. Figured there wasn't a lot of point to it because everyone was village, and I was a bit busy besides. Actually not sure about how to go about things this time. Not exploring isn't going to do us any good - we have to find the Heart and find a way to dispose of it. That's going to happen the quickest if everyone's exploring. Unfortunately that could lead to more and more eliminators, but I guess there's a chance Wyrm will have put a cap on the possible number of eliminators at one time? To weigh in on lynching inactives - to me it seems a waste, but also it's too early to truly be a problem yet. I'd be more of a mind to wait until we've got a village kill role, and then maybe get them to deal with inactives - give people a few more cycles to get into the game. The lynch is for us to generate discussion so we can the eliminators without having to result to waiting until we potentially get someone with the ability to scan alignment, if the House is kind enough to give that to us. So Elbereth. Now that there are actually eliminators in the game, thoughts on the game? (Also, to anyone who PM'd me last night, apologies for not replying. As I said, I was a bit busy.)
  11. Player list should be up to date, and people who requested the spec doc should have it. I've also decided I'm allowing pinchhitters for the first 2 cycles. Anyone who hasn't posted by the end of the 2nd cycle will be replaced, provided there is a pinch hitter available.
  12. They've linked you to where to find them. As far as using them, you have two options. You can copy the image url of the emoticon, and paste it into a post where you want to use it. Alternatively, you can save the image to your computer and then add it as an attachment to a post. That way, it'll appear in your history of attachments, which will make it easier to access them again, or when you're on mobile.
  13. @Chaos Don't suppose there's been any progress?
  14. Not entirely. The fear of what you may cause may have helped it along, but I hate vote tallies which use the character's name. Having to worry about that while compiling a vote count is just going to make mistakes more likely, by causing me to have to translate the character name into the player name.
  15. Friday 18th you say.... How can I pass up a boardgame-inspired game for the second time? Professor Alberd Hae will be coming by. He's spent his life searching for the research of the Five Scholars. A lead has lead him to this house.
  16. @Elenion, Bugsy - you should have the spec doc link, now. Edit: Ecthellion, were you going to come up with a character name? Edit 2: Made a slight change to the rules - please use a player's profile/screen name, rather than their character's name, when placing lynch votes.
  17. @Bugsy6912 Sure. I'll get a doc set up at some point, and get you the link. Poke me in a few days if I've not done it.
  18. There isn't? If I've said that, I can't see it, and that's not intended to be the case. If you're talking about the combined Day/Night cycle, usually the lynch is in the day, and the eliminator kill is in the night. Both of those happen at the same time in this game, so there is no need of a night cycle.
  19. Also reserved (for good measure) ((I forgot to do this last time))
