  1. I think one of his problems with friends is that he doesn't really have all that many peers. Only the children of other High Princes are at his social level. Of those, how many are friendly towards his house, and how many are antagonistic towards it? How many would try to make friends with him only to be able to use him to further their own ends. Given the society that he's grown up in, he has to be extremely careful of who he lets get close to him. As far as friends within the Kholin army, he's going to be their commander. How easy is to to make friends with somebody that you're potentially going to have to order into dangerous situations, or discipline, or decide on promotions. You'll always be second guessing yourself on how you treat subordinates that are your friends compared to those who aren't. Conclusion is that. At his position in society, the pool of potential friends is small, and even from that pool he'd have to be wary.
  2. I thought that she was saying that the gem didn't have to be destroyed to un-bond the blade from the previous owner. I could be wrong though, and need to start a re-read. We do know that the gem is necessary to be able to summon the blade.
  3. I tried to edit my post to fix that, but edit wasn't working for me. Edit: Now edit works, and I put corrected myself there.
  4. I don't know about you, but in my book violet and purple are pretty much the same thing. To be technical, purple is what you get when you mix red and blue, violet is the hue that comes between blue and red on the light spectrum. Edit: Not really, that only works if the light spectrum was looped around on itself as violet comes after blue and red is before it.
  5. Even with Shallan's book out, we still don't know what caused her "breaking". I always assumed that it had something to do with the deaths of her mother and later her father.
  6. The code goes towards unlocking content from the Shardhunt over on brandonsanderson.com/shardhunt-wor/ The latest content released was the annotations for Alloy of Law thru chapter 10. My code didn't unlock anything new, just got us one closer to an unlock.
  7. High of 76 yesterday.
  8. So, Brandon attended the Tucson Festival of Books today. Rather than do a solo show, he was on two Panels and did three different signings (One after each panel just outside the auditorium with the panel and one at one of the local bookseller booths.) I attended most of both panels and stood around listening to the interactions at two of the signing sessions. Most of the questions at the questions that people asked in the signing line were the typical "When's book 3 come out? (planed for Fall of next year), Which book is your favorite? (That's like asking which child is my favorite)" types of questions, so I didn't take notes on those. A couple of interesting questions were asked but I don't believe that its anything earth-shattering or even necessarily new information, but I'll put them here because I can. First Signing Line (After first Panel): One guy asked something to the effect of will we see Sazed again? Brandon answered with a RAFO One girl asked about how left handed women coped with the safe hand thing. Brandon answered that it was a bigger deal for the light eyed women than the dark eyed, but that they can cope by either wearing a glove, or retraining themselves to be able to write right handed. Somebody asked a question about the upcoming trilogies on Scadrial. I didn't hear the complete question, but Brandon answered that the Mistborn trilogy happened on the Northern Continent of the world, and that we would get to see what's happening on the Southern Continent, and that they use Allomancy significantly different on the Southern Continent than on the Northern one. I wish that they had followed up and asked if the same held true for the other forms, but they didn't, and when it was my turn to talk to him, I had forgotten. I asked the questions that Kythis added to the Ultimate List of Questions for Brandon thread. This is my reply to them over on that thread. I stole your questions to ask at his Tucson signing. First I have to say thanks, your questions got me two cards. A Szeth card with a code and a RAFO card. First question, his answer was that it is possible for shards to travel between planets without a Holder, but extremely unlikely. Without a holder (he called it an intelligence), the shard would have no impetus to travel between worlds because they're just there. Second question I changed slightly and just asked him "How many shards are there that don't have holders?" That's the one he RAFO'd I also asked about whether the thing about the Parshendi leaving their dead was just a cultural tic that Kaladin was able to exploit, or if there were something deeper to it. Brandon answered that it was just a cultural thing, it might be explained further in the Eshoni book, not anything deeper. Second Signing Line (between panels at a bookseller booth): More of the same questions as the first signing line. My questions were lamer without being able to check here for better ones, but I asked about publishing dates for Firefight and Rithmatist 2. The plan is for Firefight to come out this December and for Rithmatist 2 to come out summer 2015. I followed up this by asking him why he had decided to do Firefight before Rithmatist 2, and if Rithmatist 2 had a title yet. He answered that no, he didn't have a title for Rithmatist 2 yet, and that he did Firefight first because he was in the Firefight groove and felt that it would be best to write that one when he was feeling it rather than trying to change gears to work in the Rithmatist world then change back to work on Firefight. Lastly I asked him for his favorite bad metaphor from Firefight. And he told me (paraphrasing because he couldn't remember exactly how it went) "A space opened up like one between a fat man and the nacho bar at a buffet." He told me that I'd have to read the book to find out the exact quote. Third Signing line (after the second panel): I didn't stay for the third signing because I had been there for 6 hours and I was tired and sunburnt, he had already signed all the books I brought, there weren't too many people in line so my hopes of any of them asking interesting questions were low, and his time was limited because he had to leave for the airport in a half hour.

  10. At the signings I've been to, Brandon has been considerate about not giving out too many spoilers for his current book, but if your wife hasn't finished WoK by then, she might get spoilers for that one. Also, not all questioners are so considerate, so some of the questions asked may be spoilers for WoR. Cosmere questions are fine for the open Q&A portion. Whether you're mad at yourself for being a bit late depends on what you mean by a "a bit", and how much of a fanatic you are. The one signing that I've been at (going to another today) didn't get started exactly on time, and the beginning part was general announcements about how things would be working for that signing. So if you're only a few minutes late, you probably won't miss much, but you probably won't get a very good seat either. I've never been to a ticketed signing, so I can't answer your last question.
  11. If we're throwing out votes for Shallan, I'd vote for Molly Quinn. http://www.imdb.com/media/rm2363729152/nm0703939?ref_=nm_phs_md_1 Edit: Can't figure out how to make a picture of her show up so added IMDB link.
  12. I think you mean Peet.
  13. I went to 3 different bookstores today, hoping somebody had messed up. No such luck, and drat it all, they even had integrity and wouldn't give in to my begging.
  14. I doubt that. Amaram is one of Dalinar's friends and a probable ally in Sadeas camp. Why in the world would Dalinar want his shards taken from him? Given the "non-spoilery" reviews that we saw yesterday, I doubt that it even comes out very early in the book if at all the way Amaram "won" his shards.
  15. My solution for the "Midnight Release." Find a bookstore that will be selling it. Break in at midnight. Take a book, leaving the money for it on the counter. No way I could be convicted for something like that right?
  16. Is he flying between Phoenix and Tucson, or going by car. And if going by car, does he need a ride? Driving is pretty much as fast as flying once you factor in all the airport time. I'd gladly volunteer to drive him for the chance to question him for a couple of hours especially after having had the book for over a week.
  17. I visited Argentina last year and brought a couple of Sanderson books with me (Rithmatist and SteelHeart) does that count? Unfortunately the only time I spent in Buenos Aires was spent traveling between the two airports and waiting for my flights so we probably didn't have much chance of meeting. The rest of the time I spent more towards the south of the country.
  18. I believe that they're handing out numbered wristbands or something like that based on when you get there, so you shouldn't have to worry too much about your spot being stolen. The caveat is, I don't know when they're planning on starting handing out the numbers.
  19. I'd like to see Adolin lose a duel, and how losing affects his character growth.
  20. This was the case when there were still slaves in the US. When one was freed, they had to have paperwork from the local court proclaiming them freed slaves. I believe it was also common in ancient civilizations that freed slaves had to carry with them some token declaring their freedom
  21. My issue with audiobooks is the character names. My internal pronunciation for character names often differs from the way they're supposed to be pronounced. When I listen to the audiobooks, its often hard for me to match up the characters that the narrators are talking about with the ones I'm reading about. Even when I can match them up, the difference in the ponunciations bothers me enough that I can't get into the story as well as when I just read it.
