  1. I'm nowhere near as knowledgeable as 99% of the people on this forum, but from what I understand... We don't really know what Shards, or Adonalsium are. What I DO know is that the Shard holders are - or in some cases were at one point - humans holding on to a power called a Shard, which is one of 16 pieces of a shattered Adonalsium. Each shard has a different intent, independent of the person who hold it, but it can influence the person holding it and the person holding it can actively resist that Shard's intent. I'm not sure how to define it properly, but each Shard has a different form of Investiture (like a power source) for their magic system. Sanderson has said it is possible for the Investiture of one shardworld to be used to power a different magic on another shardworld through some unknown process. Each of the magic systems are different, but they all seem to follow the same laws and have similarities. I'm not sure how much of Sanderson's Cosmere books you've read and how much of this is old news to you but I figured it's worth typing. I'm probably wrong about a lot of this, and the technical details are a little over my head until I decide to do a fair bit of reading and research. Anyways hope this helps, I'm sure some more knowledgeable people will be able to give a much better answer!
  2. I really, REALLY liked the Sword of Truth series. I started reading it in grade 7 or 8 and some of the concepts in it blew my mind at the time. Kahlan was a strong female lead (at least at the start). I think the last book I enjoyed was Faith of the Fallen, and the rest I just read because I have to know how stories end. I couldn't NOT finish reading a series I had been reading for years. And to top it off, the newest book in the SoT world feels like a complete ASOIAF rip off.
  3. Roshar. Because if I were to become a KR I could have my own Keyblade! http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/7280-keyhole-spoilers/
  4. After reading about Shallan operating the Oathgate I immediately thought of that scene - it's totally an Oathgate. I'm not sure if he just thinks the slot is a keyhole or if it actually is, but man you have me excited! Keyblades! This one thing has made up my mind about the "Which Shardworld would you most like to live on?" thread. (http://www.17thshard.com/forum/topic/6143-which-shardworld-would-you-most-like-to-live-on/) If I was on Roshar and lived by the ideals of one of the orders, I could make myself a Shard Keyblade!
  5. I sincerely hope this isn't true, but I can see how it would be possible for Hoid to become something comparable to The Lord Ruler. Good intention, crazy amounts of power, but going about things the wrong way. So far as we've seen the most powerful abilities are only given to antagonists. With Hoid eventually becoming a PoV character in...Steelheart is it? I have no idea... I can't imagine a character with what will probably be every ability in the Cosmere being a protagonist, unless he is directly fighting a Shard rather than other people. He would just be too powerful, and a Shard is the only thing that could even put up a fight against him.
  6. Well being a Breath it seems possible that it can be invested into something like a regular breath, though we wouldn't know if it would count as one Breath or the equivalent of 2000 Breaths, or be it's own unique thing, or even whether or not it could be used to Awaken something or if it would just be stored in the object. I still think it's likely that they would die after investing their Divine Breath unless they found some insane workaround (in the spirit of Compounding), possibly obtaining immortality through another route. Like I suggested earlier, obtaining 2000 breaths may do it, and who knows if it is the Divine Breath that causes a Returned to consume Breaths over time, or something else instilled in a Returned even if they found another path through immortality. If it is the Divine Breath that consumes regular ones, maybe they could overcome that limitation by simply getting rid of the Divine Breath while already having another direct access to immortality.
  7. Out of curiosity do we know who it was suggested that Sigzil tried to kill? Did he say he tried to kill his master, or is this speculation? I can see a lot of people wanting to kill Hoid/Wit, but Sigzil? Doesn't seem right!
  8. Thanks for clarifying. I was thinking "None of the returned besides the God King" but forgot to type it, and completely forgot about Vasher! Yea pretty much everything I said is 100% speculation as nobody has given up their Divine Breath and had 2000+ breaths that we have seen. We know that there is a lot unknown about that magic system by the people in that world, and it's not surprising that any Returned would want to even test if that is possible. If it is possible, awesome! If not, oops, I'm dead.
  9. It's been quite a while since I've read Warbreaker... If I remember correctly, we were told if they use their Divine Breath they die right? And as far as I know none of the Returned were ever given more than the one breath a week they needed to live. I don't know if there's WoB anywhere about this, but I'm curious if maybe having enough Breath to bring them to the 5th heightening could act as a substitute for their Divine Breath, while still consuming one Breath a week. So if the 5th heightening was exactly 2000 Breaths (I know it's an estimation), if they had 2001 Breaths and two weeks went by without them obtaining a new Breath they would die, no longer having the 5th heightening. I know it's a lot of assumptions but really the only thing we know about the Returned is that they can change their appearance, they have a Divine Breath, and they consume one Breath a week. The only reason I'm going through this much speculation is because it is the only way I could see a Returned surviving without their Divine Breath. But even for all that, we're told and shown that the instant they give up their Divine Breath they die. It doesn't happen on the day they consume the one Breath a week, it happens instantly. So I'm assuming that for it to work on Roshar, they would need to be holding Stormlight constantly, before and after giving up their Divine Breath. I doubt it is possible holding Stormlight perfectly though. The only things we've seen holding it are gems and Surgebinders, and both lose Stormlight after a certain period of time. Although, we do have something from Szeth saying that Voidbringers can hold Stormlight perfectly, but I wouldn't consider Szeth a knowledgeable source on these matters.
  10. This makes me question.. We are pretty confident that Zahel is Vasher, and he came to Roshar so he could live off Stormlight rather than Breaths, as Stormlight is much easier to obtain. But I doubt he would give up scholarship just for the purpose of living forever on an easier to obtain source of Investiture. So can he use Stormlight to Awaken in place of Breaths? If it is possible that would have absolutely insane possibilities. He could find a way to safely be out in a Highstorm and have near limitless Stormlight and possibly create another Nightblood, or something similar. Back on topic though. From the way he says it in WoB, it sounds like he's not planning on having Shardblade Spren come back to life, just stating the fact that it is possible. Granted, there's going to be a lot of time between the WoR and the last book so anything could happen, and he could change his mind about anything. #1 makes the most sense. While I don't doubt the possibilities of Breath - Diving Breath especially - we know that in the physical realm Spren are only "alive" because of the bond to a human. If they could have sentience while being physically on Roshar without a bond I have a feeling that they would never even bother bonding with somebody. I'm pretty sure what the Spren gets out of the bond is sentience, and the KR gets Surgebinding abilities. So if they were awakened using Breath, they would have no incentive to bond again and risk getting "killed".
  11. You make a good point Bramble Thorn. I'm so used to other books where authors would go out of their way to make sure a situation like compounders, or Lift would never happen. That's why it threw me for such a loop when I read the Mistborn trilogy and Allow of Law and read about what they can do. It's just so abnormal, but in these worlds these things are possible when two different magic systems collide. The main reason I made this thread was because I thought it was theoretically possible for Lift to grow herself infinite Stormlight, but thought for sure it wouldn't happen because I'm still of the mindset that authors won't let that happen. Thankfully this is a Sanderson book eh?
  12. Totally agree. I had thought she had mastered teleporting back in WoK, which was how Shallan never managed to catch up to her but now I don't think so at all. You're right, I highly doubt she would have left Shallan alone if she knew she could help. I also like what someone else said previously about how she hadn't progressed far enough to make her Spren into a Shardblade. If she had she wouldn't have alluded to Shallan that she wouldn't be wielding a blade, and she would have mentioned SOMETHING about it. Like you, and a few others have said, I think in her moment of danger being caught off guard, her abilities manifested on a level they never had before, and by reflex she drew in Stormlight after being stabbed, and teleported to Shadesmar. We've seen Kaladin use his abilities without meaning to, or even knowing what he is doing. Case in point, in WoK he attracts arrows to certain points multiple times, yet in WoR he STILL hasn't figured out how to do it at will. We know she had gems with Stormlight. Shallan had borrowed a few when hers ran out not long before the incident. Her chest full of gems washed up on shore, which Shallan took. So she had enough Stormlight to heal with and get herself out. I'm assuming when she was there she didn't know how to get back as she had never been fully in Shadesmar physically. She traveled around a bit, met with the Highspren and learned some stuff, and obviously figured out how to get back out. Time must be strange there, because it seems she didn't think much time had passed, when in reality it had been well over a month.
  13. Awesome, thanks for the info guys. I totally missed the part in WoR talking about the squires. I spent a LOT of nights reading until 4-5 am...
  14. I was wondering if she could use Stormlight the normal way as well. It could very well be that she could but just hasn't figured it out yet because she has always had a much easier way of obtaining the energy. It could very well be that the only negative part of her wish was that using food for Stormlight leaves her malnourished, at least on the meager diet she is able to currently supply herself with. But I see it as much more likely that the negative part was that she could only obtain the energy to use Surges through food. If she could just use gems like normal there really wouldn't be any disadvantage. She would use gems when available while having a healthy, properly nourished body, then just use stored body fat or food when she's out of gems.
  15. Its pretty finicky terminology really. Stormlight is a form of energy. Food is a source of energy. Obviously food isn't Stormlight, but like in real life there are ways of converting one type of energy into another, or make something that runs off of one source of energy run off a different type of a different source. Basically like you said, there is something "magical" converting her calories into energy used to power her body into energy to power Surges. Although I'm not sure now. I don't think I remember at any point seeing Stormlight "leaking" from Lift. It doesn't really matter either way if converting her food or body fat turns into actual Stormlight, or just goes through some roundabout way of literally powering her Surges from calories, no Stormlight involved. She seems to be able to convert her stored energy at will, any time to directly power a Surge, so it's not like she has any risk of converting energy and leaking the Stormlight away. It wouldn't be like Kal absorbing as much Stormlight as he can hold - or more than is needed for, say one single Surge - and then having half of it leak out unused - she'll just automatically use the exact amount of energy required on a per Surge basis.
  16. I personally don't really think it'd be acceptable if it was true. I know it's impossible to know because we don't know the ratios for anything at this point, and even two Chips of the same size and type are known to hold varying amounts of Stormlight, making the little knowledge we have sketchy at best. I just don't remember her having grown that small handful of seeds as being particularly draining on her already limited Stormlight supply, and eating (if I remember correctly) only half a breadroll gave her enough Stormlight to slide her way around the mansion and bring back whats his name from death or very near death. I know it left her very, very drained but from the amount of food she ate, it seems like she gained a fairly large supply of Stormlight. After all, even one seed could produce enough food for a full meal. It seems incredibly overpowered if it is possible to infinitely supply herself with Stormlight, but that's just sort of how things seem from what we were shown. *Edit* Going along with Moogle's comment though, it does seem less powerful than compounding metals, I hadn't even thought of that. I suppose if it is possible to have limitless supplies of health, age, strength, weight, etc, essentially making people immortal (among other things, depending on the combination) there's no reason why Lift, in her very unique situation, wouldn't be able to have a limitless supply of Stormlight.
  17. That has me sort of confused. I'm not sure if I was tired when I read certain parts of WoR and just didn't clue in to what was happening, but if we saw "squires" I totally missed it. I just sort of assumed that the bridgemen had been living the oaths and attracted their own spren. It would make sense, being dedicated guards (minus a few people who only followed because Kal was doing it). But I could also see it being possible to possibly have a small squad of men to have the general passive abilities of just holding Stormlight, like the healing and strength it gives. Is this just speculation? Is anybody able to provide me with a quote or two that sort of backs the squire idea?
  18. I really like this idea. It always had me curious about how knowledge could be stored, in a way that couldn't be destroyed by a Desolation. The simple answer is Spren! Even if all the KR die the spren would most likely live on, as we only know of them "dying" when they abandon their oaths. The spren could preserve this knowledge for future KR, although it takes a while for them to regain their memories, and Sly seems to be a bit... less knowledgable... than the rest of the spren we've seen bonded. Possibly because she is so new to the Physical realm compared to them though.
  19. So we've seen that Lift can grow plants VERY quickly. I don't remember how much Stormlight it used at the time, if it mentioned it at all. I'm wondering if Lift could just carry seeds of different plant food, the rockbuds that provide grain, possibly ones that produce fruit. She's in a unique position where she creates her own Stormlight, and it is shown that half of one bread roll gives her a fair bit of stormlight. Do you guys think she could use a bit of Stormlight to create a source of food that provides her with more Stormlight than she used to make the food? This could be an amazing way to get around so many things! She would never have to worry about Weepings, being away from society and gems, she wouldn't be limited by how many gems she could carry, since she could fit a LOT of seeds in the same space gems would occupy. Also it could easily solve the problem of her metabolizing all of her food and body fat leaving her malnourished.
  20. Sadly that's the way of our theories. Being given so little information to work with, most of the time it's almost pure speculation with a sentence here and there that may back it up or give some credence. Still, I'm definitely of the mind that what ever is the main source of the Desolations (Odium Spren in my mind) aren't of Roshar, but appear on Roshar when a Desolation happens. I'm definitely with you there.
  21. which I was interpreting to mean that the Shardblade wasn't his Honorblade, but could also be read as someone who took up Taln's role, including his place in the Oathpact. The thing is, I'm not sure if any of the Heralds could fit; of the male Heralds, Kalak and Jez are in the Prelude (I'm going to discount Kalak somehow lying to himself or Kalak somehow not realizing Jez has been replaced), Jez references Ishar (technically we don't see him, but seems unlikely), Nalan is highly likely to be Darkness, and...there's really no other option that I can tell, meaning if this is true it's probably not another Herald. I have a feeling that line is VERY important. It seems to imply someone essentially made him a Herald, or gave him the powers of one as well as possibly the memories. I wonder if it's possible that somehow Taln's (or some other Herald's) mind or memories was transferred to this madman claiming to be Taln, and 4500+ years of memories, memories of the torture, and possibly 4500 years of torture itself (if he was sent back to Damnation in place of Taln) broke his mind.
  22. I'm really liking this theory of Nohadon being a bondsmith and being behind the requirements spren have for the KR. I wonder if there's any possible way it could be worded so we don't get a RAFO, but somehow I doubt it
  23. Awh well that's slightly disappointing, I was hoping for a little game as I wasn't around for the last one. Ah well! Thanks for clearing it up guys, I'd have been scouring the internets for days
  24. It seems rather strange that a human would somehow get a gem in their body by forming a bond with a Spren, but getting a RAFO rather than a flat out "No" does make you think. I suppose it could be an explanation as to how Surgebinders can hold Stormlight. But it seems strange, because a gem can hold Stormlight for what... a week or more, depending on the size? We hear of the Stormlight escaping a Surgebinder's body fairly quickly, leaking through their skin and when they breathe. Interesting thought though and probably deserves some more thought but like you said... 3 am hurts the brain
  25. So it isn't like the hunt last time where anybody could participate by figuring out clues?
