  1. ......you take your upvote and get out, you terrible person.
  2. Loved that too. even though I kind of expected it, it was still hilarious.
  3. Airsick Lowlander - second class needs to be a ranking here. That is all.
  4. well, I haven't finished, I literally just got back. so.........by "we don't know yet" he probably inferred "we don't know right now when we start oathbringer."
  5. So, just got back from the release! So hype! But, to the point. I got two books, one for me and one for a friend, and I asked for new oaths we haven't heard yet. "My Glory and my Shame" - this one seems strange, could just be a nice quote. "You cannot have my pain" - possibly seems more legit. There was a ton of people, and it was late, so maybe these aren't what I asked for, but maybe. just something cool I guess.
  6. Well, atium provides a glimpse into the immediate future, which ruin could see. Ruin was actually very bad a long term planning and seeing into the future; that was preservation's strength. So, I don't think seeing into the future is evil in the cosmere, though we can probably safely assume the reason it's considered taboo on Roshar is because it's not of Honor. Cultivation seems like a shard/intent that would go well with seeing into the future though... and I've always thought odium would be good at it too, being like a Manipulative Bastard, or a Chessmaster, and so would have to be adept at planning/predicting. I kind of like the idea that odium is messing with the diagram, though I don't think he would do so directly. My money is on Odium influencing Cultiavtion, and if the diagram is twisted or changed from what it would have been otherwise, it's because of Odium's influence on Cultivation, not through any direct action. Stuff to think about though...
  7. Seconded. They are very different things at this point; one is dead, the other alive.
  8. Shallan doesn't really have oaths to break. There's the first generic one, which is more of a way of living your life, then the next ones in her order are speaking truths, which don't seem like they can be violated. Maybe lying to herself and ignoring pattern all these years just made it difficult for him to manifest to her. Pattern never says or implies that he was dead like syl was, and there are some important differences. When syl comes back, she has full memory of before she left kaladin, whereas pattern seems to be learning it all again. Pattern also talks about coming from shadesmar as opposed to the spiritual realm (if that's even where dead spren go, it's a little unclear at this point), and he seems to also have recentish knowledge about shadesmar. So maybe he just regressed? It also could be possible that shardblade powers are granted earlier in the "oath" process for lightweavers (kaladin had to say the 3rd ideal to get it, but I don't think that was the case with shallan, since that would have made the truth she said to soulcast the 4th ideal, and would put her ahead of kaladin, which I guess she could be, but it just doesn't seem like it). the ideals only matter in how the spren view them, and I think that honorspren would be more easily offended/killed than other types of spren, especially ones that love truth and lies. It could also have something to do with the Stormfather relationship. Honorspren especially seem to answer to him, where I bet pattern answers to a different governing body. It seems like the Stormfather was the one behind syl's removal even more than kaladin's emo backslide. Just some thoughts.
  9. Well it seems like it would either be cultivation, or some other "important and female" character that we don't know yet.
  10. i like it. And, it fits with the squire idea. I don't know if that ability is relegated to those that share the leadership surge, but I think Kaladin's next big ability burst will be along leadership lines, maybe extending to followers.
  11. I think it warrants further looking-in-to. But I like it.
  12. My first thought was that Broken Sky referred to Sel, since the Shards that were there are both splintered. I doubt that the names correlate with physical attributes of the worlds. I also think the most important piece of data we're missing is who named them, and when.
  13. 16 is a special number in the cosmere, not just on Scadrial. Of course, I can't find a quote...but I'm reasonably sure that I've read it somewhere. That being said, it's probably not the only important number. Preservation chose 16 because it was significant, not because it was necessary.
  14. Going back to selling a shardblade...It would be problematic, and not just because it's a priceless artifact, or because it would implicate Shallan in her father's murder. What would you do if you really wanted a shardblade, and a small teenage girl who clearly lacks combat training said she was selling one?
  15. We don't know that there aren't mini shards though. There haven't been any pointed out in an obvious way, though Brandon does call them "splinters" and mentions that we've seen some in every book except the mistborn series. A shard of Adonalsium is not Adonalsium, but they are parts of adonalsium. A splinter is not a shard, but a part of one. We also don't know if a shard could be shattered. I always assumed that splintering a shard was the way to break it. Never even occurred to me that one could be shattered, which brings up a whole different set of questions. Maybe someone should add this to the list of questions for Brandon? Can a shard be shattered as opposed to splintered? Splintering vs shattering definitely invokes interesting imagery in my head, and fits with how I think Odium is shattering shards (getting pieces of the shard to rip themselves away from the shard somehow). Brandon's careful with his word choice, so I'm sure there's a very purposeful reason "splinter" is the verb of choice. Just like (probably) a shard doesn't behave or have the power of Adonalsium, a splinter wouldn't behave like or have all the power of the shard it came from. We're mostly just speculating on what forms the splinters could take. Obviously, they are sentient, at least to a degree, and their motives are probably heavily influenced by their shard's intent. Do shards splinter into 16 pieces, or maybe 16 forms, or 16 somethings? like, are Seons only 1 aspect of Devotion (I assume they are of devotion...seems to fit), and are there others that aren't so obviously manifest? When I think of the word splinter, the idea of a "splinter group" seems to fit well. It could be that when a shard splinters, there is still a sizable chunk that is the "core" of the shard somewhere. Edit: formatting and clarity.
  16. Also check out the wiki: it's a great way to get a lot of info, and also easier to avoid spoilers. Just make sure you have several hours of free time. It's worse than wikipedia and tvtropes combined.
  17. probably feruchemy, since that's how he knows to be in the right place at the right time. I'd bet, knowing what he knows, it's pretty easy to figure out who is important.
  18. There are some other splinter WoB's that really don't help point out what splinters could possibly be, but we do have a couple that point out at least some splinters we have seen. aons are splinters of aona shardblades or shardplate are at least related to this whole idea as well. there are splinter in TWoK, Warbreaker, and Elantris, but not in Mistborn. Spren seem to be at least somewhat related to this idea. I like the idea of Minor Shards for sure, but there's not a lot of info about what they are/could be/are capable of.
  19. Relevant quotes from Brandon: I don't recall WoB specifying how to "unmingle" the two pieces, like Weiry said. Edit: added last line.
  20. This is exactly my question after thinking some more on this last night. Is each shard composed of other virtues that make it that? Protection, for example, could fit into more than just honor. I'm guessing that the reason Adonalsium broke into 16 pieces has to do with how important the number 16 is in the Cosmere. As for this, I think Hoid was wondering whether you could take all the pieces of something, and turn it into something else. Possibly speculating on Odium's intent? I wonder how the pieces of a splintered shard view themselves, and how much of the shard's intent they carry. Maybe Odium wants to assemble something out of just the pieces he likes.
  21. very cool source. Considering how much time I've spent reading those Q&A's, I'm surprised I hadn't seen this one.
  22. So I just finished HoA again today, and there were a few things that stuck out to me: 1. The mist that seeps out of vin/sazed when they're holding preservation's power (or ruin's) is really really similar to how stormlight leaks from surgebinders. I know there was a Q&A I read recently where stormlight (highstorms?) was similar to the mist from mistborn, and that we didn't have a name for it. Just thought that was interesting. 2. When sazed picked up Ruin and Preservation, he essentially created a "new" shard because he was of a single mind how to use the opposing powers. They function as one shard now, and WoB said that if Sazed were to die, he would drop harmony, not ruin and preservation (though they could be separated again). This made me think that Adonalsium could be put back together eventually. Extrapolating in the other direction, would it be possible for Honor (or other splintered shards) to be rebuilt? Obviously, there's a lot about splintering that we don't know, but it seems at least like a plausible idea. What do you guys think?
  23. I also get the feeling that She blames, at least in part, humans (or whatever race) for His death. Like, either they had a key role in it, or failed to do something (breaking the oathpact) that would have kept him alive. This, in my mind at least, kind of fits with how Odium would probably work.
  24. I've recently (having only recently been told about the cosmere) been obsessed with with all things cosmere. Figured I'd been lurking/perusing all your awesome theories and information here long enough, and decided to make an account. Probably won't post much, but we'll see
